are the settings which should work well. If not, the file is corrupted.

How do i set it to 1v7 or 2v6?
my "computer only team" tab is very strange... only allows "0" or "random" if I've put other parameters in.

It is not about comp TEAM, it is about players.
Settings:
1st line (human only players)
ONE or TWO (you can set it on 2 if you're alone and wanna play with 1 comp player as ally for example)
2nd line (human only teams)
ONE
3rd line (computer only players)
SIX or SEVEN (depends on number of human players in line 1!)
4th line (computer only teams)
as you wish. I mostly set it to ZERO, because that way, the comp fights each others and becomes stronger then)
5th line (water content)
NONE
6th line (monster strength)
STRONG
there you go...

got it working now =)
I've figured why i've been so confused by the random map options in the past... my top 2 rows say "human or computer players" and "human or computer teams" respectively...
For this map, leaving the first line as random (and the others as you have said) also allows the choosing of whichever starting "colour" you want... nifty discovery 
Can't believe I just found this out after 10 years of playing HoMMIII
