Ditto.
I played it for two days.
Then I went back to Diablo II online.
(Which, of course, isn't even an MMO)

Battle.net was Blizzard's first step into online games. Never forget that. This system is very popular even today.

I've played World of Warcraft quite actively/passively since its release.
Now that I think about it I have no idea what I find so great about it .
I think what first got me playing it were the following reasons:
1. It's Warcraft.
2. I liked RPGs.
3. The concept of MMORPGs seemed interesting.
4. No internet preachers were constantly scaring off people from it by comparing it to drugs. (A.K.A. Lack of awareness of the possible negative effects it might have on one's health .)
I've been playing it ever since . I think its quite undefendable.
Yes the combat is mostly centered around your gear/equipment and your talents/perks (A.K.A. Number crunching) and the "rock, paper, overpowered" thing going on between the character classes. The "skill" is more about managing your mana/energy/rage, manouvering (A.K.A. NOT running off a cliff or falling asleep in a rain of arrows) and managing your gear. This applies to both Player vs. Player and the Player vs. Mind numbing dungeon.
The online community consists mostly of all sorts of primadonnas (A.K.A. Most of the healers and tanks), elitist pricks (A.K.A. The more "hardcore" dungeon raiding people with fancy guilds and stuff) and just plain idiots (roughly 60% of the population) with some more or less decent people thrown into the mix.
Even with all that I still find it pretty enjoyable and addicting like Tetris. I can't really defend it in any way.
The monthly fee is hurting my wallet, but I guess I can have a clean(ish) concience it by saying that atleast I do chores for my allowance and I spend less than the "cool kids" who pretty much never go anywhere without candy, cigarettes and energy drinks.
I personally find the lore pretty good/decent and I feel that World of Warcraft has not hurt it in any way. Period.
I go to school, I do my homework, I get decend grades, I have other things in my life (I.E. Heroes Community ), I have only one chin, I have about 2 or 0 friends and most importantly I am OK with it.

@Kipshasz: I know.
Supposedly they're going to monetize Battle.net though. That would suck.

I don't think that would happen. Blizzard makes billions from WoW, so no need for another money source

Aye, they will. Let's hope it will be a one-time life subscription.
@Kip
They have officially stated that Bnet will be a payed service. We'll just have to wait and see how this payment will work.

Indeed.
To use Battle.net in the future you will have to pay Blizzard each month. As I have told you before, their might over lesser beigns is becoming more and more clear!!1
However, this means that there will only be one monthly fee - FOR ALL BLIZZARD games.
So if you get Starcraft 2 this spring and pay to play it on Battle.Net - then WoW will also be free to play as they share monthly fee.

(I loved the original, so why not?)
I'll have to research alternate ways to play online though.

Sorry, but Blizzards new "Warden" system and technology will make such things impossible.
To even acess to multiplayer you will need to pay - you might even need to pay just to play single player.
Blizzards wants your money - and they will get it!

@Asheera: Indeed it is.
Hamachi eh? Yes...I can't wait for Diablo III to come out.
But that's a topic for another thread.
I noticed I haven't given my POV on this thread's topic so here goes:
I personally do not hate MMOs. I dislike paying subscription fees, which is the reason why the MMOs I play currently are free to play.
MMOs are pretty fun and offer a social component that few other places can offer (kinda like the social component of being here with you guys. )
Also Runescape is epic fail. Who in their right minds would prefer Runescape to Diablo?

MMOs are ok if you only are interested in playing just one or two games. If you're like me and enjoy playing 10+ games at any given time, paying a montly fee becomes an obligation, ultimately resulting in playing the MMO over others.

What the hell?!
Monthly fees for ALL Blizzard games?!
I know it takes a lot of money to hold MMO servers open but Starcraft's an RTS and Diablo is pure hack and slash RPG! That shouldn't require so much money...? Or should it?
I see this as pure greediness!
