Heroes V Damage Information in H6
This thread is to discuss whether or not the information that appears (damage dealt/kills) when you mouse over an enemy you are attacking or casting a damage spell should be implemented in Heroes 6.
I personally always disliked the "kill info" that was displayed here. The previous Heroes games ( at least HoMM II and III) forced you to think and judge for yourself, weighing your ATK/DEF and damage against his stats and HP. I liked this as I felt it added some strategy into the game; the person who can better judge creature matchups has a significant advantage. You can't rely on the computer to tell you it, you have to figure it out for yourself.
Thus, I was very disappointed when I opened HoMM V for the first time and saw that I was told how much damage my creatures would do and how many of the enemy they would slay. It may seem a bit silly to be complaining about something this trivial but I strongly believe that it is a "dumbing down" of gameplay that the HoMM series would be better off without.
Your thoughts?

The other heroes didn't display how many you would kill?
Actually I like that kill and damage amount display a lot, it definitely provides more strategy, not less, because you'd have more accurate information to think and make decisions about. What provides less is the amount of (mini) calculations you would do otherwise, but that's not strategy.
There's also the tile-display when you hover over the enemy, which definitely helps a lot. Do you want to get rid of that too, so that we'll have to calculate manually how far the enemy can reach? I just don't see any point in this at all, apart from annoying some players who'd have to calculate everything manually.

Since it was only a matter of doing the math, I don't see why they should not display the kill info. Sure, it's healthy to do math, but it was quite annoying to make a mistake because you did the calculation wrong in the heat of the battle. I agree with Asheera, being able to consider the number of kills and making your plan of action based on that provides the higher level of strategy.

Oh and btw SwampLord, if you're really interested in this you can disable it in Heroes 5 as well I think with a text-mod. Never tested but (for those that know) just take a look at the text files in "Text\Game\CombatStrings\Predictions_Formats\"

I only agree on the fact that by revealing hidden information it isn't good.

Lol, H2 and H3 didn't display that either.
I can understand why some people would not want to do math, it is a pain. I just felt that it added a bit more thinking to the game, which I thought was good because it's a TBS. For me an important part of the battle in H2 and H3 was figuring out what enemy stack I could hit the most effectively; I don't know why but I was let down when H5 just told it to me up front. Playing against AI I don't mind really (AI does it already), but when playing against fellow humans I think it removes something that could give you an advantage, and a part of the strategy. As far as the movement tile goes, it was very simple to figure out in H3 at least so no I would not want that removed, in my opinion it's a nice convenience.

Hmmm this is interesting, what would I have to delete/modify in there? Thanks!

I have a little theory: strategical thinking shouldn't be made harder by interface.
On the other side, an interface that makes things more clear is obviously the better choice. When I saw the kill display and all the other little things, it was love at first sight.
I go even and say: even more info should be displayed. For example, retaliation kill would be very useful (in the form of ((MinK1-MinK2)-(MinK2-MaxK2))).

Extract all text files you see in that folder to the data directory, keeping the same directory structure as in the .pak file.
So you should have "data\Text\Game\CombatStrings\Predictions_Formats\" with all those .txt files in there.
Then simply modify those files with Notepad to make them not display the damage stuff anymore. For example, open up DamageSimple.txt and instead of <value=min_damage> (what it was) write not displayed or something like that.
However I tested and somehow it works only for creature attacks, not for the hero as well (and neither for spells)
