Merry Christmas! (our turn)

Some Orthodox Christian Churches (such as the Serbian) kept the old Julian calendar, which causes the 14-day difference in some holidays.

So, since our Christmas thus comes the 7th of January...

Merry Christmas!

It's a bit different here. We give out all the presents and decorate trees for New Year, as we keep Christmas (and Christmas eve before it) rather spiritual and non-commercial.

There's a load of customs varying from family to family, but one is common here; we take a usually dry oaken branch (called Badnjak) as a symbol of the past year and keep it in the house at Christmas Eve, and on Christmas morning we burn it as a symbol of the passing year. It also symbolises the oak that shepherds brought into the cave of Bethlehem and which Josef burnt in order to warm the place up. The fire which jumped toward the sky came as an introduction to future events.

The custom also has some pagan roots (connected to the Sun Cycle or the god Perun, probably), and shows how Christianity merged with polytheism, creating a unique combination of faith around here. Many pagan customs are, disguised, still present today, as a part of Christianity.

Right, I'll stop the babble now...

Mir Božji, Hristos se rodi!
("Peace divine, Christ is born!" - the Christmas salutation answered with "Vaistinu se rodi!" - "Born indeed!")

Honestly, I don't see the point of having two different days for a national holiday, like Christmas.  They should all celebrate in the same time and spend wondeful time together IMO.

What's funny with all these people with centralized opinions like you is: what do you suggest? Which one to pick? What? Is it too biased to pick for everyone?
