Poll Question: Dan or Gil?
In this post there are the stories of two teenagers, which are in two opposite situations. Both are quite negative, in my opinion. This is quite extreme, but sometimes we do hear about teenagers who have gotten to these conditions. Maybe even here, on HC. Anyhow, we all have a bit of Dan or Gil in us. Read them and answer the questions below.
------------------------------------
Dan is 15. Adults say he's a 'rough kid'. He goes out with his friends several times a week, from the evening to the morning. They sit together at parks, smoking and drinking, often they vomit of too much alcohol, once Dan even fainted. Those meetings don't happen only at nights, sometimes Dan skips school and go to those parks. He has slept with a few of the girls he hangs out with, and told his other friends later, calling them snows. At school, he feels pretty much isolated. People call him 'freak' and laugh at him. His grades are quite bad, he often yells at the teachers. Therefore, he doesn't even feel bad with skipping days of school. He sometimes does small crimes, breaking to places here and there, but almost never get caught. His parents are already exhausted of chasing after him, and they leave him alone to do whatever he wants. If you ask him "are you really happy with your life?" he'll say no.
Gil is 17, going on 18. Most of the day he sits in his room, not doing much. He mainly spends his time in front of his computer: his true addiction. Gil never meets people, he never goes out. Rarely he spends time with his family, although he's in a permanent fight with them. Every time it's something else. At Friday night Gil is, like always, in front of the computer, talking to people whom he considers friends, although he has never seen them, not even once in his entire life. Gil has never had a girlfriend, and it seems to him that everyone around him has had many. His self confidence is very low and he feels bad with himself, ugly, stupid, unloved. At school, he's pretty much alone. Perhaps he has a few people to talk with, but at breaks he always sits at the class, waiting the bad day to end, only to get back to the computer, to do things that nobody will notice anyway. His grades aren't very good, he hates school and often skips it, wasting his free days in sleeping and being on the computer or in front of the TV. Gil hates his life, which seem already pointless to him.
-----------------------------------
My question is: Who would you prefer to be?
Which once of them has better/happier life?

So both are in condition to "jump off the roof"?
Both are in such despair I wouldn't want to chose either.
But If I had to...I would chose Gil, he has a change to still fix his life (unlike the other guy, who seems to be addicted to worse things than computer)

Err... neither But Gil is slightly better than Dan in my opinion, since Drugs, Smoking and Alcohol =
And a computer addiction can be cured much more easily than a drug one.

I never mentioned drugs, only alcohol, but nice to see you read your fellows' replies.
I think that Dan at least enjoys his life, at least he's not alone. It's easier to get out of things with company, rather than getting out of things alone.... I think that being alone is harder.

But his friends drink and smoke too, right?
Ive had a smoking addiction (or whatever you may call it) before I finished high school, and when I tried to quit, my friends (who also smoked at that time) hardly encouraged me to do it

Perhaps it's true, you can't know for sure.

Very true. And it's easier to be affected by the group than to affect it.
Quote: Dan.
Reason: Gil has no life. Dan does.
Exactly my opinion.

Better to have no life than the crippled life Dan has, at least IMO anyway.

I suppose another reason why Gil is getting a little more sympathy is because of similar past experiences.
At least that's what I'd say. I was kinda like that for a long time.
EDIT: Except the skipping school part.

According to his and thus their life-style, those "friends" wouldn't make the least effort to help Dan if he would get in trouble. Heck, I think they would even betray him if it is profitable in some way.

Dan is alone, probbly more thehn Gil,becouse if i Gil decided to change hes life style, hes internet frindes would remaine, and hes RL frindes would exist. Unlike Dan who has the opposite, however the moral is probbly that be happy with your own life and find how to improve it rather then try going extream either way.

Hmm... Both situations suck, but I'd rather be Gil, because as Gil I would have more of an opportunity to turn things around.
Also, am I the only one who thought this thread was about Street Fighter?

LOL, I didn't mean that perhaps they are snows, I meant that it's not so sure that his friends only like him because of what he tells them.
@Father and Asheera: The bad part of the computer addiction is the lost of contact with the society around you. Alcohol doesn't do that. You can be an alcoholic and enjoy your life better than a computer addicted.

I think Dan's friends would lie to the police for him.
But Gil has no life. Take away his computer and he won't know what to do. Dan has social contacts no matter what you say about the quality of his buddies he at least has real buddies isntead of internet ones.
