Indeed.
But Gil's online "friends" would not lie to the police for him but would turn him to the police even if they weren't threatened.
Funny how you only klign to that part and skip the real friends part completely...

Dan reminds me of someone I horribly hate in my own life, so...
Come 'ere, Gil!

Hmm, do you really think someone like Dan can have real friends? I doubt it.

Neither of them, of course, but Gil over Dan. Guess I'd rather feel stupid than actually be stupid...
Oddly enough, I actually know several people who fit both descriptions perfectly...

Interesting how many Gils here are.
Is it that most HCers are nolifers themselves and symptahise with the guy?
Or do they really think that delusional life on the computer is better than a rough life in real world?
I still can't understand how someone can put a few internet contacs over real life contacs. Just makes no sense. It's like putting TV ahead of real life. No sense at all. Please someone explain to me.

I hate addicts, I hate people with no respect (towards women) and I generally hate the direction his life is going. Gil could somehow turn his life more favorably, if he tried.

With Dan, the damage is done. With Gil, there's a clean slate. So as Gil, you'd be able to get a life instead of putting up with one that's going beyond help.

He isn't going to try. Why would he?
Dan's life will end up in the working class with family.
Gil will live in his moms basement for the rest of his life.
I'd rather be Dan.
And Dan is by no means beyond salvation. He might even be easier to change his life around than Gil.

Simply put, I hate people like Dan. He is a prick. Enough said
Who cares if he has a life or not? I'd never want to be a prick.
Gil at least seems the emo geek (or dork). As bad as that can sound, it's a lot better than Dan.
And no, I don't "sympathize" with Gil, I actually hate Dan, so you can draw the conclusion why I chose Gil

He wakes up some day, looks in the mirror and decides "Screw this, it's no fun". I dunno.

Quote: He isn't going to try. Why would he?
In my case, it was kinda like this:
*morning bathroom routine; looks in the mirror*
Gee, I wonder what I'd look like with long hair?
*progress*
*visit at an optician's*
So hey, how about them contacts?
*sudden surge of narcissism*
*friends appear*
So I suppose the answer to your question would be something along the lines of "I wonder what happens if I try this seemingly insignificant change..." unexpectedly leading to multiple other changes.

I would say Dan. Like Joonas has already said, Dan has friends and a life whereas Gil does not. If you take away the computer then Gil won't know what to do. Doesn't matter if Dan drinks alcohol, he still has more of a life (a better one as well) than Gil will ever have. Alcohol and Drugs are an addiction, yes, but at least you can still have fun with your friends while doing it, whereas if you sit at a computer then the only friends you might have are Internet ones and even then, you can't exactly see them face to face so they aren't 'real' friends.

Well, at least he calls them that way...

commit suicide?
at least it's better than drinking and punching someone else or ... (don't get me started ). Gil at least doesn't annoy anyone.
Gil could start and make a blog and make $$$ from advertising. Or make something, ask Bill.
drinking alcohol and sleeping with "snows" ain't such a business.

Yes but you can go down the pub with FRIENDS which Gil can't do because he has none. Sure there might be fights and you may get hurt, but at least you had more of a fun night than Gil ever would have had.
