HC Reviews

Doomforge made one, so why not create a general one where everybody can post reveiws of different games?

I will start with reviewing all Blizzard games and just say postive things about them the action RPG game Fable 2.

Fable 2
Fable 2 is the long awaited sequel to the award-winning Fable 1. In Fable 1 the game was very linear and you started as a farmboy in the small coasttown of Oakvale.

Fable 2 is set 500 years in the future. Gunpowder and rifles etc has been introducted from the asian-inspired land of Samarkand (which you unfortuanly cant visit yet).

Fable 2 is an action RPG set in the fantasy world of Albion. This fantasy world is based on medieval England and folklore there and everybody speaks with an brittish accent.
In Fable 2 there are no elves or dwarves, but instead new fantasy speices such as the Hobbes.

Unlike the first game, you can be both male or female in Fable 2. You start in Bowerstone this time and the old town of Oakvale has been completly destroyed and submerged. You will find out of the story and mysteries of Oakvales destruction later in the game.

You grow up in the slums and the game starts with you and your sister Rose. A trader is selling a magical box which is supposed to make your wishes come true. At first Rose doesnt want to buy it and thinks its silly because heroes are old myths now and nobody belives in magic anymore.
But then a mysterious lady called Theresa comes and tells her something that I dont quite remember. Either way, Rose changes her mind and you go on a small quest to earn gold to buy it.

Fable 2 is all about choices, and even as a kid your choice will change the entire Old Town in the future. As another part of the mission, you are locating some documents of thieves for the town guards. If you choose to turn in the theif deeds, then the Old Town will be beautiful and healthy. If you dont do it, and leave it to the thieves - the Old Town will turn into an rotten slum.

Rose greatest wish is to visit and even live in Fairfax Castle, ruled by the tragic Lord Lucien.
Lord Luciens daugther and wife were killed in a mysterious disease and he is very depressed.
Luciens agents comes to bring Rose and Little Sparrow (your hero) to Fairfax Castle. Rose wish has come true.

Lucien has researched about an monument of the Old Kingdom called the Tattered Spire. All the Will (magic) in Albion is linked to the Spire but Lucien needs some heroes powers to activate it once he has reconstructed it (you can see the Spires reconstruction as the story progresses).

Luciens sees that you and your sisters are heroes, destined to destroy Lucien and his research. So Lucien shoots your sister and yourself. You fall out from the window, but as you are of an heroic bloodline you survive and the mysterious lady Theresa heals you and lets you grow up in a Gypsy Camp.

Basically, you are to find the Hero of Skill, Will and Strength to kill Lucien from using the Spire to do something unknown and Theresa guides you although Theresas true intentions aint very clear...

The main story is very short, and you can finish it in a couple of hours. But there is lots of land to explore and side-quests to do. You can get children and have a wife or be gay etc.
If you eat meat and pies you get fat and evil (if you eat meat) and if you eat vegetables and tofu etc you get pure points and thiner.

The combat system is simple but great. There is no plate/chain mail armor or bows anymore and there is no "Defense" value on items - so be free to wear whatever you want.
You can easly swap between melee and ranged attacks in combat. For instance, you can click B to cast the Slow Time spell and then click X to perform some melee strikes and flourishes and then finish it off with Y - a shoot with your pistol or rifle.

The only annoying thing is the spell system. Its was stressing and annoying to swap between different spells. Also the game has a number of bugs. Albion is rather big and splitted into Regions. There are many loading screens though and its not 100% freeroaming - maybe like 50% free roaming.

You gain experience from killing monsters. There are five different kinds of Experience. Skill, Will, Strength and General Experience. The spells and abilities you learn are not suprinslgy - Skill, Will and Strength. Skill makes you taller and lets you fight faster and shoot better. Will makes your veins glow blue and you look older and improves your spells. Strength makes you stronger and improves health and melee combat.

You dont get gold from quests anymore, you just get more famous. Instead you got to work for it. There are two different kind of jobs. The first one is that you just need to click on the green spot all the time. The second one is killing stuff.
Both are very boring.

The music is great and the atmosphere aswell. Albion feels like a real and growing world. Your heroes descion affects the entire world. For instance, in the bandit region of Westcliff there is a small camp and you can invest 5000 gold to develop the region. After you return from the Tattered Spire in a quest (you are there for 10 years) the region has transformed completly to a town and there are no drunks or thieves there.
For once, there is an entire city for evil heroes. Its called Bloodstone and a bandit time. Here there are girls selling themself and there is no rules, laws or guards.

Fable 2 is a great game. The main story could have been a bit longer and the world a bit more freeroaming and larger.
Still, its great RPG and you can replay the game many times as good/evil/corrupt/pure/woman/man and do different descions which affects the world.

Sound: 7.5
Albions music is wonderful and really adds a lot to the atmosphere too. The old english feel is great and the music does a lot nice turns. There is also some Fable 1 sounds.
Its not epic, but its still very good.

Story: 7.5
The main story was short but great. The final event at the Tattered Spire is really unexpected and can make you a bit frustrated.
Albions lore is very great and unique.

Gameplay: 7.5
The combat system is simple but yet very fun. The game could have been a little more difficult though. If you are wise and have potions it would surely be possible to not die once.
You cant die either, you just lose some XP but that is welcome. The jobs are very boring though.

Atmostphere: 9
I have fallen in love with Albion. The music fits and I love most of it. The only thing I dont like is the loading screens. It kind ruins the fairy tale feeling. It would also be nice with a little more developable towns. The voices are great and I love the Heroes of Will and Strength. The hero of Skill is an real ass but he is still awesome.

Graphics: 10
The graphics are beautiful. Its so sad you cant take screenshots. It really makes me want to return to Albion, just to see the graphics. They are really wonderful and the screenshots actually look as beautiful as in-game.

Overall: 8.5
Fable 2 is a great game and im sure you will love it. If you love epic boss fights you might get a little disappointed though. Defintly worth to buy. There is downloadable content too, if you complete everything in the game (find all gargoyles, demon doors, chests and silver keys etc) and three expansions are planned.

My guess is that the expansions will be the tropic South, Samarkand in the East and the Northern Wastes.
All are mentioned in the lore several times and surroanding Albion on three sides.

You forgot property.  It's very easy to make money with the right investments.  Currently I'm making over 12k every "pulse" from rent.  It's really nice accumulating interest when you aren't playing the game either.  Didn't play for a couple of days and discovered I had 240k waiting for me.

As to the spell system, it couldn't really be easier to switch spells.  You hold down the right trigger and select with the d-pad.  Not very difficult.

Yeah, you can basically buy everything ^^

But I was scared to move into houses within demon doors. SPOILERS

My first demon door was the one in Bloodstone. So I stepped into this beautiful winter forest and with lots of nice lights etc.
And I saw this cozy wooden cottage. It looked so nice.
And when I stepped inside.... FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A super loud sound comming out from nowhere and the cozy little winter cottage turns into a dark, fallen house filled with corpses and toture devices. I almost got a heartattack, I really did not expect it.

And I stepped outside and the nostalgi Fable 1 music was gone and the forest dark and dead and there were cages hanging instead of normal lanterns.

After that I was scared to go into demon doors for a really long time.

The demon doors... Are they still extremely cryptic and nigh impossible to figure what they're on about in the second one? Okay, maybe hard puzzles are relative... But when an inanimate door starts gabbing about fear of commitment and only opening op for a person he's sure he can love, then... I... Would be afraid as well.

I'm going to review a game unfamiliar to most of you.

Heroes of Might and Magic V: Tribes of the East

Ubival's successor to the Homm series previously developed by 3D0, They appear to have picked it up at a bankruptcy sale and looking upon the game decided that with polish, money, and a little elbow grease that they could revive this franchise. They did just that, albeit their success was like bringing a caveman back to the future, The horrors of the future dawned on it and nostalgia was lost in modern game design.

Firstly they eliminate the old world's lore, calling it too complex and adopted a tolkein/warhammer-esque world. This world called ashan was named after asha, who was the good twin of the primordial dragon twins, urgash her evil twin created demons, while Asha created 6 more dragons who then created some mortal races such as angels, and stuff. This is just the beginnings however and if you think it couldn't get worse you were right.

They also imported 3d graphics hoping to breathe new life into the series but ultimately made it look even more warcrafty.

Having finished reviewing i'm going to sum it up in a group of unrelated categories.

Graphics - 8 - 1.) Take the graphics from megaman 2
2.) Scrap the megaman 2 graphics
3.) Create new 3d graphics, that like most 3d games back then leave much to be desired.

Audio - 9 - Plenty of good tunes but eventually you get tired of chorus's and such entering your ear. All the sound effects are sound except for the strange audio emitted by certain male elves.

Interface - 4 - Clunky, but workable... Why the hero has a defend button we may never know...

Story - 6 - out with the interesting old in with the inspired new

Gameplay - 10 -Interface makes the game play suffer slightly but i believe game play to have taken about 3 steps forward and 2 steps back.

Atmosphere - 7 - H3 had a better atmosphere because this one has taken several steps in the wrong direction.

Overall - 7.5/10 - fans of this strange series will like it but it will most likely not strike a chord with the majority of gamers.

Lord of the Rings: Conquest

Lord of the Rings: Conquest is different, if not unique, from other LOTR games. Its an action game where you usually fight as a normal soldier in the famous battles of the Third Age.

In LOTR: Conquest there are four classes that you can play as.
The Warrior focuses on direct melee combat.
The Scout is also focused on melee combat but has various tricks such as stealth and bombs.
The Mage focuses on ranged spellcasting. They can heal, create barriers, cast Lightning and Fireball.
The Archer focuses on direct ranged combat and can do poison and fire arrows for instance.

This game may not be completly accurate to the LOTR lore and universe. In the tutorial, you are the one that kills Sauron with ease.
And as far as I know, only a very few people in Middle-Earth where Magus.

Still, the game is fun and lasts. You can play as both good and evil, but both sides have the exact same classes.
You can change class on the battlefield.
There are two "campaigns". One with Sauron and one with the free people that focuses on the events of the War of the Ring.

You are charged with different tasks in the campaign battles such as Mines of Moria, Defense of Minas Tirith and Assault on the Black Gate etc.
Usually, you are to capture areas through standing and protecting banners for some time.
You dont get tasks if you dont play the story missions, there you get to do things on your own.

There are several types of battle. Including Capture the Ring and Deathmatch.

Combat is so-so. The Warriors and Mage feels a bit overpowered. The Warrior can spin around and flame up his swords and kill everybody. The Mage can heal himself and do several powerful spells.
Combat is mostly mashing buttons, and the only class I enjoyed a lot was the Warrior although the Mage also is rather fun to play.
Depends on your style, im sure Asheera would choose the Scout

Overall, I think its a good game. It has both many good and bad sides. Now for the rating.

Sound: 5
It has classic Lord of the Rings music. Since the same LOTR music is used in both the movies and in EVERY SINGLE LOTR game I cant give it a very good rating. Nothing special.

Story: 6
The story is based on the battles in the trilogy. The game manages to shape story events into gameplay well although there are some lorelols.

Gameplay: 7.5
The combat system is simple and average. Mostly button mashing. Some creatures such as Trolls have minor tactics. I like fast paced combat though. But the battles are pretty fun and the difficulity is good.

Atmosphere: 7
Its an action game so its a bit unfair to rate this
But the battles are cool and a bit epic.

Graphics: 6
Again, looks like pretty much all LOTR games and like in the movie. The game looks a bit "rought" and "scrappy"
It was released in 2009 but feels like it comes from 2006 or something like that.

Overall: 6.5
I liked the battles a lot and I enjoyed the game. The ratings I use are not very fair for a game such as this.
If you enjoy battles on a large scale and like games such as Star Wars; Battlefront etc then you will probably like this game.
Its a fun co-op game too.

If your not really into action games etc and cant download it and you can spend your money on something else you might want to pass.

Most probably, although the Mage is interesting as well.

In short I mostly like characters who are not boring tanks, and who are pretty good in every situation, even if not having any companions (for example, the Archer may need the help of a companion, I guess? The mage can at least summon). And the Rogue (Scout in this one) is one of the most versatile classes usually, with the Mage being a close second with all that spell arsenal (in most games)

Well, most people always have a favorite class type.

I almost always play some kind of Hunter or Ranger
I dont like the archer in "Conquest" though. It doesnt have a pet to support and is very weak in melee. Plus the fightning system with it is rather annoying.

Next time I will review "Star Wars: The Force Unleashed" but that time is not now.

And this is Xerox, but on another computer. As I have forgot my password and was not automatically logged in on this computer I created a support account called Xerdux (xerox + redux ).

I feel bored so I might as well review a game... let's rock.

Guilty Gear X2: Reload
Genre: 2D fighter

I like fighting games, DoA, Soul Calibur, Tekken, Bloody Roar, Mortal Kombat, DBZ ones... but GGX2 is definately my favourite.

First off, be prepared for some crazy characters...

We've got Bridget, some kind of transsexual boy fighting with a yoyo and a giant mechanical chainsaw wielding teddybear.

We've got Faust, a 2.5 metres tall crazy doctor with a bag on his head. He randomly throws stuff around (including his own head) while attacking from all directions with a giant scalpel...

My favourite character is Venom, a white-haired homosexual dude with a strange obsession for pool-balls... yeah, GGX2 really breaks a few stereotypes.

So, on to the story. Well... you'll find it hard to understand ANYTHING if you don't look things up... the story mode didn't really satisfy me as a newbie.

Anyway, short story: Humans manages to create a sort of ultimate energy source that they name "Magic". Unfortunately, this didn't stop all the wars.

Soon humans manages to use Magic to create powerful living weapons named "Gears". The Gears were designed to only follow their master, but accidentally, a commander Gear named "Justice" breaks her orders and takes control of all Gears, leading into a great war between the humans and the gears.

One of the main "heroes", Sol Badguy, manages to seal away Justice and ends the war. Later, a second Commander Gear appears. Strangely, she doesn't seem to have any bad intentions but since no one wants to risk another war, a bounty is put on her head.

This is where Guilty Gear X2: Reload begins. Of course, there's tons of more to learn... but it's actually quite an interesting story once you manage to grasp it.

Ky and Sol facing off

So, on to the gameplay. Guilty Gear features quite simple moves by all characters, which is good since the game doesn't focus on super combos but instead good timing. (though it is possible, I've made like, 56 hit combos...)

Actually, there is a combo penalty. Lengthy combos will decrease in damage as it becomes longer. A punch will do significantely lower damage in the end of a 20 hit combo rather than in the beginning.

The gameplay heavily supports agressiveness. Negative penalties will be applied to passive players, and agressive players will be awarded with different bonuses.

One of these bonuses is the Tension gauge which gradually fills up, once it's filled to half you can perform a few special actions.

Tension moves are special overdrive moves that uses ½ of your Tension gauge, most of these are extremly cool. For example, the crazy doctor Faust throws himself to the ground, swimming through the ground towards his opponent. If he hits, he shoves a knife up his opponent's ass. Literally, I'm serious.

Tension can also be used to suddenly end a move, allowing you to quickly continue with another move. With these so called "Roman Cancels" you can create all kinds of combos.

We also have the Instant Kills, or "Destroyer" moves. While extremly hard to hit with, these moves can instantly kill your opponent in an often hilarious way.

I've played this game for months and I still don't feel like I've grasped even 25% of my character. Sure I can make all of his moves, but linking them together... jeez, it's hard as hell, but it's ENDLESS FUN.

Gonna use a Pc-Gamer style rating...

Rating: 92%
+ Beautiful sprites! Awesome graphics!
+ Fighting system
+ Original characters
+ Music (quite unusual to hear such an amount of rock and metal in a fighting game...)
- Story is hard to grasp
- no online play (unless you happen to own a japanese version or a Xbox version.)

Review: [PROTOTYPE] (X360)

Genre: Sandbox Action
Developer: Radical Entertainment
Publisher: Activision

I don't know how long I've been waiting for this game... and my joy when it appeared in my mailbox about a week ago was over the top. Since then I've been playing it like crazy, and now I'm making a review.

The game starts with you, Alex Mercer waking up in a morgue to two scientists surprise. The action starts immediately as Alex discovers that he has gained incredible power which he must use to get away from the military who wants him dead. The story is partly told by your future self, who you see in cutscenes where he is talking about the events that unfolded. Alex, with no memory of his past, takes contact with the only person who he has any relation to anymore, his sister, Dana.

A zombie infection is spreading throughout the city, and a three-way war breaks out between the military, the infected and the one man army, you.

Alex's powers comes from consuming other lifeforms and shapeshifting himself into different powerful weapons. There are up to 5 different offensive forms Alex can assume, along with two defensive forms. The first you recieve is the Claw form, which turns Alex hands into well, claws. Just about any normal human oppponent can be sliced into pieces easily, and you'll like it. Each and every form of course has special attacks. Alex can shove his claws into the ground and erupt spikes beneath his opponents, impaling them instantly in a rain of blood. And remember, these guys have been bad to you, really bad, you'll feel like you have a reason to kill, you're one furious badass mother******.

The different powers coupled with wallrunning, gliding through the air and many other things really sets your imagination going. One of the coolest things I've done is hijacking a helicopter and then leap out from it, and while in the air use your tentacle arm (whipfist in prettier words) to grab another helicopter, get inside it and brutally slaughter the crew.

Alex Mercer's Blade form in action

You'll have amazing fun just trying to get to know Alex and his powers. There are a huge variety of different attacks and forms that can be unlocked by spending Evolution Points. Alex can also assume people's appearance by consuming them, allowing you to trick your opponents. For example, you can assume a military form in the midst of battle, run up to another soldier and accuse him for being you, chaos follows

Alex may have lost his memory, but he can instead feel people who know things about him, and by consuming them small parts of the plot are unveiled to you. Searching and consuming these targets are not demanded, but the plot is interesting enough for you to chase these so called "Web of Intrigue" targets around (and the bonus points gained are quite tempting too)

The controls were easily learned and maneuvering through your different abilites is smooth and easy, ensuring that you'll be able to own bigtime.

There are flaws of course, and I'm gonna tell about the biggest one. One of the most entertaining things in the game is of course, the gore. Completely owning a group of people with your powers almost always results in pools of blood splashing everywhere, you'll feel like a true badass. But later in the game, when it gets harder and you can have 5 tanks shooting on you while 5 helicopters are chasing you, the gore disappears. Tanks are a big threat, you'll have to take em out or else you're screwed, the helicopters needs to be taken out too. The problem is, metal doesn't bleed. The little people shooting at you with their puny rifles becomes unimportant compared to the vehicles and being on the ground with them becomes too dangerous. You'll spend most of your time rushing up and down buildings, destroying helicopters and crashing down on tanks with huge explosions.

Don't get me wrong, destroying tanks and helicopters is extreme fun, but the game seems to forget one of its core parts. Needless to say, the game's early parts really shine.

The graphics can seem a bit dull at first and not really next-gen, but once you're in the midst of chaos with fire everywhere and hundreds of people with ragdoll-physics flying around (or rather bodyparts), you'll be amazed that the framerate actually keeps up. Prototype looks amazing when close to the action, but from a distance it looks kinda crappy.

The plot was pretty interesting but a bit too short and left me screaming for MOAR! Fortunately once you've finished the game you can freeroam around the city and search for hidden orbs, complete different events and just slaughter around. Or if you want to take on the story again, you can select "New Game +" and go through the game again with all your previously unlocked powers.

Overall, it's an amazing game with a few major flaws.

Rating: 85 %
+ Alex Mercer is a complete badass
+ The Gore
+ Big arsenal of powers
+ Interesting plot
- Way too short
- Too many tanks/helicopters

Im playing prototype... and yes... alex mercer is a very dark character... this game let's you play with this part of your personallity... is the first game that makes me want to cut people in  pieces ... is a very fun game... I think the graphics are bad and the enviroment is very repetitive... but the rest is just amazing the feeling of being almost invincible is there... and the feel that you can make anything you want too... I dream a lot of times to plane like alex mercer do...  is a very good game... and I'm not fan of this kind of games...

Have you reached the part with Taggart yet? (don't want to spoil too much)

Alex sounds so damn badass when he's chasing him with all his "YOU CAN'T HIDE FROM ME TAGGART" screams and everything. He's a really talented voice actor, I wish they would've used more "rage" if you now what I mean.

He's still cool though, I just wish the way you go berserk all the time could've reflected in his voice acting a bit more.

As I mentioned in the review, my only real problem with the game is that I want MOAR! MOAR!

Hopefully there will be a sequel. Would be interesting to have a natural landscape instead of a city. Imagine climbing a huge mountain and then gliding down from it, maybe pass a few birds... and then crash land in a great forest, trees falling down as the shockwave from your landing crosses the ground... and then you hear the sound of a military helicopter.

OH OH! Maybe consume a few COWS! That would be awesome! COW DISGUISE!! The military WILL KNOW NOTHING.

Well, you'd probably have a lot less people to slaughter but I still think it could be more interesting than the same old New York
