Your all time favourite sports
All you need to do here is post your favourite sport and if it is only seen in your country alone, if you want to you can explain it a little about it. Yeah and it has to be other than something related to computers. Chess is all right but if you can stick to more physical (meaning sports where you have to exercise) it would be greatly appreciated.
The thread is all about Sport. Do you have a favourite sport (other than things to do with the computer) that involves skill, brains and strength. One extremely dominant sport in Australia is Football (no not soccer) also known as Australian Rules football.
It has not spread like the wildfire here in Australia and I doubt it ever will. I remember a Crows (Adelaide Crows, best team in the league) Lions (Brisbane) match in New Zealand. Now the crowds had no idea of what’s going on. Whenever a player marked it, they would yell and cheer and when even a player of high class as Andrew McLeod (best player in the league who plays for the crows and I personally know him, relations on my mothers side) goes close to the ball, screams of I love you could be heard. It is funny how the NZL’ers had know idea what so ever but still yelled (not as loudly or knew when to cheer and for why as an Aussie crowd did) and supported the game
There are many different players and different teams in Australia Rules Football. Teams consist of eighteen players on the ground and a few interchange for tired or injured players. There is one full forward, two forward pockets, three half forwards, three centres, two wings, one ruck, two to four rovers, three half backs, two back pockets and one full back. There are five umpires. Each has a specific job and must stick to it.
· Goal Umpire ~ There are two goal umpires, one at each end. They stand between the goal posts, and when the ball is punched, handballed or kicked through, he lets out a score by showing one hand for a point or behind and two for a goal.
· Boundary Umpire ~ Again there are two of these guys and it is there job to guard the out lines. They each stand on one side of the playing ground. When the ball runs over the line, they blow their whistle to symbolise the ball has indeed gone out.
· The Field Umpire ~ The Field umpire is like the referee in soccer. With only one of him, he must run around following the ball. He controls the game and he controls the free kicks and the play on calls. He also reports players for serious offences.
There are different ways of registering a point or points on the board. Here are five ways of getting a point for or against your team:
· A goal is scored when the ball is kicked between the two inside posts known as the goal posts by an attacking side, without getting touched by any player as it passes through the goals. A goal is worth six points to the attacking side.
· A single point can be registered in 4 ways (a behind is worth one point). I have included the ways below.
1. The ball travels between a goal and a point post.
2. The ball is kicked between any of the posts but is touched on the way through.
3. Any player who runs the ball through the posts or handpasses it in.
4. The ball hits or passes over the goal post.
In football there are no offside or knock on rules. Therefore the player can:
· Run with the ball as long as he bounces it every twelve to fourteen steps.
· Kick the ball off the ground.
· Pass the ball to a teammate through the form of a kick or hand pass.
· Kick for goal.
· Mark the ball and take a kick without interference.
· Shepherd an opponent away from our teammate with a bump or a block.
· Receive a free kick for any dangerous play.
· Allowed to take high flyers on other players.
What you are not allowed to do in football is:
· Throwing the ball.
· Grabbing an opponent around the legs, neck or shoulders.
· Holding the ball firmly while being tackled by another player. A player must kick or handball the ball away as soon as he is tackled firmly.
· Dropping the ball while firmly being hold by another player.
· Lying on or over the ball preventing others from using it.
· Pushing a player in the back and forcing him out of a contest.
· Wasting time, or forcing the ball out of bounds on purpose.
· Running too many steps without bouncing the ball.
You could get reported for the following:
· Charging at an opponent.
· Tripping an opponent.
· Striking and opponent.
· Attacking the umpire.
· Swearing badly.
· Fighting with an opponent.
Some questions frequently asked about football:
How is the match started?
The field umpire bounces the ball in the centre circle. This is repeated each time a goal is scored.
What happens when the ball goes out of bounds?
The boundary umpire stands on the boundary line and faces toward the crowd and chucks the ball over his head into the playing ground.
Is shepherding allowed and what is it?
Yes, a player may block and opponent tackling their player who is in possession of the ball, providing the shepherding is done fairly and I the rules. However shepherding is not permitted at the centre bounce or throw-ins.
Can a player tackle?
Yes, by meeting the opponent who is holding the ball, and with your hip and shoulder, bump into him or grab him around the waist.
Thanks for reading and if you have any questions what so ever, just post them and I will answer them best as I could.
BTW: If you want to question my knowledge on who is the best team or player, don’t bother, because I am right full stop. The crows may not be ‘consistent’ but they could beat any team in the AFL (remember rnd. 14? When the crows beat Brisbane and Carlton?)

I looooooooove soccer so much! It is the best sport, and takes so much stamina, speed and strength to play, the people are usually good looking (at least here in Minnesota) it is fast-paced, great team-sport, can be really aggressive and fun, has cool looking uniforms, can be played anywhere, anytime, has a universal appeal and is fun fun fun.... plus I guess I'm good at it, so I love it!
Oh oh.. here comes the bashing from the baseball nerds! LMAO, j/k
P.S. Could someone explain why you all hate soccer so much?

I don't know about Wesley...
...but I find it stupid that 22 guys (or gals) run around a field hunting a ball... where is the fun in that?
...on the other hand, the so-called "xtreme sports" are much more fun, take more stamina and better physical condition and can help you test your limits...
...but if I had to choose a more conventional team sport, I'd go for basketball... at least it has a bit of strategy in it...

I'm doing long-distance running, so this is my favourite sport. I also played table tennis for many years.
On TV, I prefer athletics, soccer and some ski sports, like downhill, slalom, biathlon and ski jumping.
and yes, Adam Malysz rules.. but I still hope that Martin Schmitt can beat him at the Olympics
