Quote: Like I said, art (and entertainment for that matter) is not about making you feel good, it's about making you feel.
This is my sentiments on the matter exactly. A movie can be a very profound experience, if you can attune to the atmosphere, relate to the characters or simply feel empathy/sympathy for them. You get events that you wouldn't get in your normal life.
There are so many types of movies, and one watches and likes them for different reasons. Some may be simply aesthetically extremely pleasing. Lol, and to be the black sheep I must admit I like some musicals as well. The new ones I mean, Chicago and Moulin Rouge (the best!) and even Mamma Mia!
@Father. Saw 1 is a classic (and only the first part in the series). It left my heart beating very fast. And it was intelligent, to some extent. Very well done imho

Sure. Hostel I wondered why I watched it afterwards, so much pointless gore that I didn't really want to see. Did not offer me anything at all, it was plain twisted. For some reason I also felt that in alien vs predator 2 - that it was pointless to watch it - even though it wasn't disturbing.
Generally horror movies can be brilliant but they require some things to be flawless to achieve that chill running down your spine. The average horror movie tends to be trash aimed for teenagers, lots of gore, little sense.

Hostel was a BIG disappointment, I don't understand the hype around it. There was nothing clever about it. It didn't get under your skin, so to speak.
A very good horror movie I saw lately was Rec. Spanish horror. But this is getting off-topic now (almost at least, dunno really )

Never heard of either one.
I specifically chose those movies to match your supposed interest in politics. You could at least google them to see if they'd be worth watching for you.

I can't think of too many examples of that Totoro, maybe "Talk to her" by Almodovar which had some very funny scenes.
There have been some good points about music and camera-work by TD. I love good camera work like in the movie 'M'.
I still rate the script very highly in importance. However, some of my favorite movies have unforgettable images.

I only saw Hostel II and it was an okey film and the story was average and cool if not a bit lame.
I agree that gore is not horror.

I agree. While "Silence of the Lambs" was more of a thriller than horror, it remains a good example of how to make a thrilling character, that is way more inspiring that a ton of severed body parts.
