Oddmaps
A discussion came up about this in the old Round Table Forums (when it was hosted at Strategyplanet), and the basis of the idea was, what if you were able to create maps that weren't just square, but almost any shape?
Now in my revised proposal, maps would be divided into regions and sections, with regions being the whole map, and section being, well, sections. Sections would be the current minimum map size (in H3 this is 36*36), but instead of choosing overall map sizes, you choose the number and setup of the sections (up to 4*4), so you could have the normal maps (36*36, 72*72, 108*108 and 144*144), but you could also have a variety of other map shapes, eg.

Isn't this the same as a square map with special obstacles?
For example, check the Abyss type combat arena using the H5 Duel. You'll see it is not really 'square'

I would like maps to be not just square, but also rectangular. I mean like in WC3, where you can choose the height and the width, so a map could be 128x216 for example, or 128x96, etc.
As for custom shapes, I agree with Asheera - these forms can be done with obstacles.

Oh sorry I thought this was about battlefield maps.
But yeah the obstacle part applies to the adv map as well.

Well sure, or you want to waste 3/4 of a map I suppose you could use obstacles, but it just seemed a waste to me.

This depends upon the shape of the map you wanna do.
Like
X=
XX
could be done with obstacles and that won't be too much a waste. But when we talk bout
=====
X=XXX
XXXXX
XXX=X
=====
that sure will be.
By the way, if the size determine feature would come into play, the map would use less doodads to transform into the shape we want it to. Like this:
XXXXX X=XXX
XXXXX ===> XXXXX
XXXXX XXX=X
Only two "squares" instead of 12.
And the other question is - how to realize it? I guess I don't understand the idea correctly.
If we take your
X=
XX
then what does "=" stand for? Just a piece of darkness? Then why not water or some other obstacle?

Still seems like an awful waste of obstacles to me. Additionally (yes = or - just means darkness, unusable map space. Additionally, my idea could be modified so that you could create a map like:
XX-X
XX--
----
X-X-
ie, you could have separate areas of the map only reachable by some gate, eg have a map with Sheogh, while also having an underground.

I don't think we >really< need rectangular maps. Square is much closer to perfection
As to custom-size maps, there was some hack for H3 which allowed any size of multiply 18, from 18x18 up to something around 9000x9000 (outer space, anyone?). Personally I didn't launch it, but for me that's enough.

If you knew a bit of how the maps are stored and programming optimization, you'd understand why square is the best even if it has 'waste' of memory.
