UPCOMING SERVER MOVE
AOH and HC will be moved later today to another server. Up to 1 day of downtime is expected during the move. Reasons for the move:
- Our dedicated server has been infected with a trojan that is being used to send spam or some other malicious activity of that kind. The host issued a 16 hours deactivation notice...
- Dedicated server was very underused, so I'd like to switch back to shared hosting again. In these two years shared hosting plans became much more powerful. Dedicated server is much more expensive and as we discovered can be vulnerable to trojans, which on shared hosting there's staff to take care of. All or most of the functionality will be replicated on the shared hosting, so there probably won't be any difference at all from a user's perspective.

I assume you considered hosting your own server at your house or nearby, is there some reason you didn't?

Move is getting a little delayed due to the time it takes to set up a shared hosting account - hopefully tomorrow. In the meantime host OK'd keeping the dedicated server online for a little longer. E-mailing features such as thread notifications and e-mail member functions may not work in the mean time.
Shared server shouldn't be slower - even though it has more clients on it, it has much more CPU and RAM.

Yooosh thanks for letting us know.
Too bad really we only get to hear from the mage of the land in times of dire need. But then again all superheroes only appear exactly when they are needed^^.

I don't think so. I mean, only the server computer itself will be shared by multiple sites and owners, the files of each site will still be password-protected by its respective Admin.
But I am not sure how this stuff works so I may be wrong.

I haven't forgotten those periods of hax and stuff in January
It's, imo, the best thing to do.
[AND we have an (excellent) explanation why we didn't hear of Val for like 1.5 months]
