Hey, I just don't want the government to only protect it's people and not let people brutally murder eachother or wrong eachother. I don't want the government to take control of the economy or deprive people of a source of happiness. If you claim happiness doesn't come from material means, then you shouldn't care who has money and who hasn't. I am a little communist, if you ask me who should take care of education (though, I wouldn't outlaw private means) and water supply (drinkable water should be affordable to even the poorest). Personally, I want to restrict as little as possible and capitalism is a good way. Noone seizes control like feudalists. Noone becomes poor though neglect or trade is not restricted because of socialism.
Simply put, liberalism, in the european sense, isn't exactly the fairest way, but it is the most pleasant way for most. It allows for the individual to exist.

So MM how has it developped from your latest situation? Was it since valentine's you updated about... Yasmine?
The second question doesn't need confirmation, (or maybe I got the name wrong, I was just referencing 'what is love' to make sure we're talking about the same thing and sound like an *** at the same time.)

Close on the name. Jasmine.
Things are very good. She's on vacation with her family right now visiting her grandma so... (***prepare for un-manly puss moment***)
I miss her.
We weren't really doing anything "intimate" for quite some time and she seemed bothered by it so I planned a camping trip last weekend. That was nice. We had a big fire going. Had our tent set up. A bottle of wine. One of the best weekends ever. Also, we looked at the date and realized we've known each other for over a year now. We started talking about all of our favorite memories with each other and decided since there were so many, we would put together a scrap book.
I guess that's pretty much it. I'll post a more detailed proper update in the What is Love thread maybe next weekend.
My question will go to Mvass:
I just saw a preview for that documentary Religulous and it reminded me of you. If you've seen it, cool. I'd like to hear your thoughts on it. If not then my question is, have you always been atheist or whatever you choose to call yourself (I personally don't like being defined by a word) or were you raised with some sort of religious background and changed your views from that?

No, I haven't seen Religulous. It looks interesting, though.
As for my atheism, I was not raised religiously, although there was always a Bible in the household - plus, since I moved to Oklahoma, 99% of the people around me were Christians of some sort. But my parents are non-theists, as are my grandparents (although my grandma always gets mad if I say I'm an atheist. She says, "Say 'agnostic'. 'Atheist' sounds too militant.") My parents have made me attend church a few times, though - I thought it was a waste of time. But they never spoke ill of a religious person just based on their religion.
Except my dad is some kind of vague semi-superstitious guy now - it's weird. He doesn't believe in God or spirits in particular, but he views 100% rationality as excessively confining and tries to tap into his "inner power" to achieve "maximum effectiveness", whatever that means. (My opinion - it's a midlife crisis, influenced by listening to Nietzsche and Chesterton. )
My question goes to Gootch, if he's still around:

Quote: How did you learn to write so well, and how did you come by your political opinions?
The first part to this question puzzles me and I don't think I have a very good answer.
Several things contributed to the evolution of my writing style. First and foremost I think is that I was encouraged by other members here, most notably Peacemaker, to write. Imagine that, someone who would rather suffer a root canal than give praise, identifying praise as a contributing factor to his development. I seriously need to get out the irony business.
Another factor that heavily influenced me was my time in the marine corps. It wasn't that the corps was a breeding ground for intellectuals, it was the hard exercise in the form of running that gave me clarity and made it easier to put the words in my head to wherever. Some of my best work has come from after a hard run; the kind where I've felt alive and exhilarated afterward and not the kind that makes me eat a seven course meal and promptly pass out. I have only experienced this sort of clarity from running. Neither biking, swimming, nor any other form of exercise has done it for me.
Another factor was one of my English professors. When we were talking about an excerpt from Joyce's Finnigan's Wake he pointed out that good writing stems from the strength of nouns and verbs. Those are the key. Adjectives and adverbs make for weak writing and should be avoided. Put another way, what tonality is to the spoken word, nouns and verbs are to the written word.
And maybe the last factor I can think of was my ruinous marriage. I never spoke about it in detail here because, for among other reasons, I wasn't interested in sympathy from strangers. Affect me it did though. In a recent conversation I had with my not-yet-ex-wife, she reminded me that from all great art comes great suffering and maybe I could remember that when I'm writing the great american novel.
I imagine that being forced to read from the time I was 4 or 5 as opposed to watching television also helped set a base from which I operated later on in life. I've neglected reading for pleasure for a long time and I have no doubt by reading more my own writing will improve.
As far as my style is concerned, I want my prose to be easy to read, which seems to set me at odds with modern novelists, and sometimes when all my cylinders are firing I want it to be lyrical as well. How do I achieve it? I don't know. Do I achieve it? That's up to the reader to decide.
As far as my political views, they were no doubt shaped by my parents. I came to trust their authorities and in turn, embraced the views of those authorities. My father introduced me to David Halberstam, who is the greatest writer of nonfiction I've ever come across. Want to know about Vietnam? Read The Best and the Brightest. Want to know why Detroit effin' sucks and why american cars don't measure up to their foreign compeitors? Read The Reckoning.
Who are my authorities? I've already mentioned David Halberstam. Garry Wills is another. Fareed Zakaria is another, though hindsight says he was way off about our need to be involved in Iraq. I listen to NPR and the BBC, and laugh at the dreck that FOX puts out. Recently on NPR I listened to an interview with Andrew Bacevich, who was talking about his new book The Limits of Power: The End of American Exceptionalism. That book has shot to the top of my must read list because of the interview he gave.
I've developed the capacity to listen and learn from other people and HC was probably more instrumental in all of that than any other forum I frequented. We have been blessed with some talented and knowledgeable members over the years and I'm a better, more well-reasoned person because of my exposure to them.
If people need to slap a label on me, then I'm a snarling liberal, the kind that won't buckle under the many torments of the far right storm troopers who know how to sneer the word 'liberal' in the manner that made Ann Coulter famous but have no substance to back up their words. We need a strong government alongside good governance. I see the Republican party as being bereft of any good ideas and instead, those hypocrites cry about smaller government while they push for a larger government involvement in people's private lives. Libertarians? They're absolute loons who live in a fantasy world.
My next question goes to...Svarog_Undead!

Can I answer now instead?
In 15 years, I should have finished my book and lets see... im 29 years old then. I see myself either working as a Lawyer (since Social/Society Orientation and Swedish is my strongest subjects in school) or IT-Engineer. I would probably STILL play WoW
And hopefully have a very stable life with a girlfriend and AT LEAST one kid. I want it to be a girl and her name will be Nova. And I will keep cats around me. And maybe a dog.
