*** New Arena Tournament *** rules debate and registration

I am thinking of starting a new tournament for all arena fans at ToH, but not only...

To do that, I would like to know first that there are enough players who want such a tournament... otherwise there is no point in hosting it.

Also I don't have in mind a fixed format for the tournament, nor do I have the rules, some of these will be like in previous tournaments, some won't... so I would like to debate on this and choose the most entertaining format for all by voting ( all vs. all, something like Champions league with groups and play-offs, or just a knock-out tournament).

The tournament should start in late April, beginning of May... if there are players willing to join.

MAP
The map for the tournament is in progress and everyone should contribute with ideas over there also for final version.

UPDATES
Rules from a past tournament have been added since everyone seems to like them, as they were.
Tournament start date is set for 26 April 2009

Tournament Format

As there are a lot of players(~20), and playing all vs. all would require big time effort from players( more than 36 games to play), the tournament will have two distinct parts, the groups and the play-offs.

In the groups phase, everyone plays against everyone from his group, and the winner of the group is the player who has the most points in the end. In case two or more players have the same ammount of points, the winner of the direct match-ups is the one who gets the better place. If equality still persists, we will calculate a rating based on the results with all players from the tournament, and one with the best rating wins.

The first four ranked in each group advance to play-offs phase.

In the quarter finals,
- 1st player from 1st group meets 4th player from 2nd group (match-up A)
- 2nd player from 1st group meets 3rd player from 2nd group (match-up B)
- 3rd player from 1st group meets 2nd player from 2nd group (match-up C)
- 4th player from 1st group meets 1st player from 2nd group (match-up D)

The host of the first game is the player better ranked in group phase, then they switch.

The match-up is decided by strike-out:

- first player(host) strikes out a town for the opponent, then the 2nd strikes out a town for the first, then it’s first player’s turn to strike again … and so on until four strikes.
- after that 2nd player chooses his town, out of the ones not striked by the opponent
- in the end 1st player chooses his town also, and they proceed to the game

Ex:

Towerlord strikes Sylvan
Zilo strikes Necro
Towerlord strikes Necro
Zilo strikes Fortress
Towerlord strikes Dungeon
Zilo strikes Sylvan
Towerlord strikes Fortress
Zilo strikes Academy

Zilo chooses Inferno
Towerlord chooses Dungeon

They fight until 3 wins.

In the semi-finals:

- winner of match-up A plays against winner of match-up C (E)
- winner of match-up B plays against winner of match-up D (F)

They fight until 4 wins, same strike-out system.

In the finals :

- winner of match-up E plays against the winner of match-up F

They fight until 5 wins, same strike-out system. Winner of the final is the winner of the tournament obviously.

Basic Rules
1. Every match between two players consists of two arena games. For every victory in arena you gain 1 point, for loss - 0 points.
2. Starting towns/heroes are set at "random". Players can choose starting bonus (I strongly suggest picking artifact as bonus ).
3. There are no restarts (because of "bad" town or "bad" spells or bad whatever).
4. Game settings:
- time limit for turn is 15 minutes (if both players agree, can be unlimited or other);
- difficulty is hard (although game will reset all resources to pre-set values at day 1 anyway);
- autosave is on;
- sim turns are on;
- dynamic battles are off;
- ghost mode is off;
- animation is set at maximum.
5. First turn (day 1) should be skipped in order to create autosave.
6. During second turn (day 2) both players level-up, buy army, visit memory mentor and do anything else they want to do. Day 2 ends with both players in the center and in the position ready for fight. Then autosave right before the battle is created.
7. Third turn (day 3) is for battle. The winner of the battle is the winner of the game.

Additional Rules
8. First game is hosted by one player, second - by second player. The host of the game has a right to choose terrain for the battle. The host of the game has a right to see the enemy hero in the center and only then go to arena.
9. If battle ends with cast of the magic that kills every creature on the battlefield, the winner of the game is player who cast the spell. Same rule applies in similar cases (e.g., using Raise Dead on living creatures and losing them all at the end of the battle).
10. Town-portaling back from the center is not allowed. Yet, if the player has more then one hero, second hero can bring additional army to the center during Day 2.
11. If one player is not in the center of the map at the end of the Day 2, he has to transfer next day’s income (500 or 1000 gold) to another player, who can use it at Day 3. In this case autosave before the battle is made at end of Day 3 and battle takes place at Day 4.

Possible Disconnects
If disconnect happens during loading of the game, game is recreated with random town/hero settings.
If disconnect happens during Day 2, game is loaded from autosave.
If disconnect happens during final battle, replay should be made and the battle should be replayed turn by turn in exactly the same manner as it was. Yet, as replaying whole battle turn by turn is pain in ass, if both players agree, they can use different solutions (either replay the battle without turn-by-turn repetition or send the replay of the battle to jugdes, who will determine the winner).

I'm here and vote for "all vs all" format (the most balanced IMO).

Im in.
All vs all would be ok if its like 8 players in the tournament. With a lot more it might be better with groups.

well if we gathered less than 8, there's no point in doing it anyway, especially if some decide to leave before they finish their games

I have to agree with Zenithale and add to that the fact that players who don't have arena experience tend to be weaker overall.

Say the weaker overall creepers But I will agree that it plays a more important role than needed, there is only so much fun you can have with creeping and it can lose you games which can cause dissatisfaction to both you and your opponent. Just see what happens in twilight world.

Anyways I would normally like to join except my net is weak and battles here tend to take more than a duel so if we have any d/c incidents it can only cause frustration. With fiur we have had some final fights interrupted by d/c and I don't want to see this happen all over again. And before you ask nothing can be done to fix this short of moving to a new area.

Creeping is easier than fighting arena, so any good arena player should be an expert creeper ... about the duel map players i'm not so sure though

Anyway you can safely join, as I think I have an even worse connection than yours and don't have too much troubles

Depends if we are talking about noobs or veterans. You underestimate creeping, everyone can creep but not as many can creep FAST and suicide free.

Fair enough I'm in.

Don't understand how fight with full army improve players creeping skill ... Creeping skill is totally different story... Player use limited number of troops, many time no spells, no upgraded troops ...
Arena map simulate final battle of real game. Real game is a lot more complex and reach in tactics ... In real game if player have good tactic and economic skill he can win long time before final battle ... Arena is for retired veterans

It's easy to explain, in arena the battle is decided by very little details. The only way to win is to master those little details, and take advantage of them, be them creatures strengths and abilities, spells, artifacts or skills.

Once you know all these stuff, creeping is a piece of cake. I am sure that some games can be over even before the final battle has started, but that is only because of poor opponent or because of some game unbalance or super lucky artifacts, otherwise the battlefield is the one to decide the winner

Arena certainly increase the level of final battles, helps creeping, but its not enough to win a multiplayer map against a good opponent.

In a normal game there are lots of another factors, which come into the picture (economics, timing, choosing place & time for final, etc) and may play more important part.

I am poor at arena, but I do not afraid of any arena players in a real map.

Sorry, for spamming the thread.

This tournament is starting to look good, and if some of the arena addicted veterans (Sq, Zilonite, Strider) decide to come, along with some more fresh blood, we can have a really disputed tournament.

I agree with you, Kispagat, there are some aspects of the game, that are not present in arena, certain map logistics and strategic movements, but creeping certainly gets a boost. Anyway, I hope you will decide to join in, especially if you get defeated in Caesars... same goes for Strider

Won't be joining this one, have some timing issues from mid april to may.
Good luck to the participants

Arena can improve the game alot more than you think, creeping wise, i believe the arena players are just tired and sick of it.
Full map games, you play 10-20 hours, just for a final battle where the outcome is already known usually. Or maybe already known when someone picks a hero right from the start.
Jinxer should try out this arena tourney
It could be more balanced than genesis
