Hidras are good, because in the begining of the game (week 1 or 2 i guess) they could kill off flying monsters with a barbarian (1 spell power and 10 mana and no book) with blees spell (not really a given in the guild) and because this will save you lvl 1 troops...
why didn't i see that
Hidras are a bad ass unit, but too slow on the map - could be used in LATE game - against the opposing player. Teleport could be useful.. but most of the game the Hidras will spend in the town or not be bought - there are other better ways to spend gold early on imho

It's possible that there are better investment, but if you got an haunted mine close to starting point, I think it's worth it.
Against other heroes it is useless. Even with teleport spells, they'll get blinded or paralyzed, lose their attacks and counterattacks, and other players will know better than swarm all their troops around your hydras, unlike the AI.
But it's excellent against wandering monsters that annoy you, and it's better than leaving then in garrison, like some HOMM2 strategies FAQs suggest.

Yes - you're right. A much better post, and a good tip about haunted mines
Dungeon is a very nice town to play aggresive and loose a lot of creatures in order to get Dragons and mass dmg spells.
3 units with fly and one very fast walker with great stats makes a nice line-up.
Teleport could be used in the moment the Hidras get to act, but generaly a hero's turn is better spend on using a mass dmg spell i guess.

All spells and their effects are listed in the manual. Also, pretty much everything in the game, when you right click on them, will give you details, stats, effects and other information like that. Right click on a spell and you'll see its effect, right click on a creature and you'll see its stats, etc.

Quick combat
Hello everyone!
I just registered here, mainly to find out if it is possible to use some quick combat in HOMAM II. Normal combat just takes too much time (especially easy battles are boring). Does anyone know of any way to turn it on or enable it as I don't think I will play the game without it :/
Thank you very much for your replies!

No mate. Unfortunatly there is no quick combat in homam2, to be honest I don't even remember it in homam3.

that's a pity :/ ... there is quick combat in HOMAM 3, that is one of the reasons why it is one of my fauvorite games ever (skipping first battles really helps a lot and I enjoy the parts outside the combat more)
I really hoped there will be some quick combat (computers still have to fight somehow) hidden somewhere, or some mod for it ... I am not completely sure if I will play the game now, as it just takes so much time and lot of those fights are boring ... maybe I will just take a book and read it while it is computer's turn in combat
well, thanks a lot for info anyway!

Quick combat loses too many troops....or too many spellpoints...

Yeah, it is not really efficient ingame, but it sure is time efficient (which is most important for me while playing campaigns and maps against computers ;-) )
