I'm getting a new computer

So I'm finally getting a new computer to replace this old thing that I'm using right now. I have about $1000 to spend. Any recommendations? (I want a desktop-replacement laptop.)

Right now, I've found this, which seems to be pretty good (18 inch monitor!).

A related question: why are Macs so popular? They're expensive and incompatible with Windows.

Macs are popular They're more popular than they used to be, but I still wouldn't call them popular. PC has their nuts in an iron vice still.

I think people buy them because it's a lot harder to get a virus (since nobody cares about them), and for nonsensical aesthetic coolness.

If one is so worried about viruses, why use an expensive Mac? Why not Linux? (Not that viruses are that big of a problem in Windows if you know what you're doing.)

I'm looking for a desktop replacement laptop. It has to have at least a 17-inch monitor, 4 GB of RAM, a >2GHz multi-core processor, and a (non-integrated) video card is strongly preferable.

sry about my non serious post.. I want to let you know I have 2 computers and the one I paid a lot less for seems to be a lot faster.. Why?? Because it has less garbage on it? Maybe..

Does anyone here know why a computer 25% of the cost of my main one is faster?

My sis got yesterday a new bad-ass core 2 duo, with >2Ghz processing, 2Gb RAM, 320Gb HD, 19' flat-screen monitor, 128Mb onboard Videocard plus devices for U$ 800,00. This acknowledging we are in brazilian tupiniquim soil, far away from the land of opportunity. I assume you will have no trouble AT ALL finding something great for less then 1k bucks up there.

And good luck on your search! Don't go buying yourself something that requires liquid-nitro cooling.

Because visiting tons of backwater porn sites has paralyzed it in an ocean of spyware?

Defragging it couldn't hurt either.

Man there are SO many things that can affect the performance. A 600 times faster processor won't help at all if it's going to wait for the other components, or the harddisk, for example.

Not to mention bloated installed software.

@mvass: I hate Macs with a passion

Why do you need a dual core anyway? And what do you mean by non-integrated graphics? In a laptop it's ALWAYS going to be integrated. The only piece that is literally impossible to upgrade in a laptop is the video card (second place is CPU which, while not impossible, is extremely difficult).

I'm curious what you guys know about laptops burning up while playing games. I've been hearing more and more about this from people. Not rumors, but people I know have burned them up (including Myt here at HC). And one of the java based browser games I play had the developers tweek it and make a low power AFK mode because of complaints of laptops burning up.

Before I bought a modern notebook I think I'd want to look into this further and maybe check the reputation of specific models regarding heat related problems. I tend to push a computer and use it to the limit, usually with heavy multi-tasking. I wouldn't want a comp with poor thermal engineering burning up from either short term high temperatures or long term metal migration due to more moderate heat.

Binabik, all I can say for sure, is dont play with the labtop laptop directly on your lap. The leg and clothing will cover up the vents, and even if the vents are on the side still the bottom will over heat much more quickly than if you prop it on a book or something.

I am not entirely sure but I think a lot of laptops have some kind of thing underneath that tilts it if you want.. When I had one I tilted it on my table or whatever with a book or something.

Yea, that's a good point. I guess that would be called user error.

The liquid cooled fan in my desktop sounds like a damn jet engine when it starts getting hot. I hate to think of a laptop dissipating all that thermal energy.

The one you chose seems to be very nice basing on the specifications

Overheating is not a problem when you put your laptop on a flat terrain, so as not to cover places where the heat goes out. Besides, modern ones should turn off automatically when they get too hot so they won't burn.

Unless you have some crappy Siemens which overheats by default

IMO -> Laptops = garbage

Unless you are REALLY looking for portability, there is no other reason to buy those. First of all, as far as I understand you are a gamer. As soon as HOMMVI or something more demanding comes out, you are screwed. They can simply not take the punch. Unless you're going for Alienware stuff, which will certainly cost you far more than a grand.

Besides, laptops severally lack: technical support availabily, replacing parts, upgrade possibilities, repair possibilities, etc. The parts are expensive, and your product is most likely doomed to become technological garbage as soon it becomes obsolete. Plus, minor defects can get you on your knees. For example, the contact of the letter K of my fathers laptop entered short-circuit. You cannot imagine the drama it was to get the thing sorted out. It hard to imagine what it takes to replace a whole circuit table of a laptop.

Unless you are REALLY looking for portability. Just go for a desktop. Thats what I call "headache prevention".

Because it's faster.
Only if you run parallel applications. Do you need that?
It's not going to make an addition faster. It's going to make additions happen at the same time. If they are not parallelized, like MOST applications out there, it's worthless.

Single cores are rare though, but in laptops mostly, if you'll actually USE both cores to maximum performance, trust me, you'll overheat it fast.

What has the manufacturer got to do with whether it is integrated or not? I cannot see the logic.

And Intel is the leading graphics solutions producer in the world. Not very popular amongst gamers, but overall gamers are the minority. Businesses for instance. With the Larabee architecture in 2010 they will probably even get Nvidia out of the gaming market as well.

Beg to disagree here. Just one line of counterargument:
*1.8GB NVIDIA® GeForce™ GTX 295

By the way, I do recommend paying a visit to alienware website, even if you are not planning on buying them. It pays off just to have the pleasure of witnessing the real deal.
