xerox, how can you remember the date you started playing? the year is one thing but the date?
on-topic: yes the games are alot easier, I remember when I was very little, my parents had bought us the first playstation console and with it crash bandicoot three. that game was very easy to beat and we had great fun with it. but then a few years later (must have been around the year 2000) we got the original crahs bandiccot 1. and it was impossible to beat, we got trough the first boss and then not longer. it was insanely hard. and we also had a game called spyro: year of the dragon, whitch was the third spyro game for the console that I know of, that was very hard, but when we got hands on the second spyro game that came before it, that was insanely hard. it took us years and years to beat it, and long after we had the ps2 we had still not completed it, but we finally did and the final boss was the easiest boss in the game.

When you log into your Account Management page it says the date you started playing and how long your account will be active.
I was born in 1995 so I dont know what you consider "back then"

Depends on the Game.
Age of Empires 3 and Civ 4 on the Easy (not the easiest) difficulty are Sandboxes. H5 on Easy difficulty still can be challenging (in all cases, assume that you are a total noob)

No, game developers just chose to pay more attention to the actual gameplay rather than mostly the graphics.

Well games aren't just for hardcore players anymore, casual games are becoming more and more popular (singstar, guitar hero, that stuff) and the games need to reach out to a bigger audience that just us nerds
It's natural imo. Some companies still focus on hardcore games though, like Supreme Commander.

I'll say it here since the poll won't let me vote for some reason. No. Sure there are much more easy games for casual gamers as well as party games like GH or singstar but there are also punishing games like Demons Souls (which is brutal) or Ninja Gaiden series (especially on harder difficulties). The reason older games were hard was because the games were also shorter so they had to balance it somehow.

Not necessarily, Betrayal at Krondor was longer than most of nowadays' cRPGs if you wanted to explore the world a bit. It wasn't too hard once you've learned how to abuse defend and freeze, though.

So in your world there is 3 or 2 categorys?:
*Party(merged with caus)
*Causual(merged with party)
*Hardcore
I use 3 at the least.

There is a reason why there are so many difficulty mods.
Take The Witcher for example. Great, fun game, but it was so RIDICULOUSLY easy that it's an offense towards gamers.
Most cRPGs have some sort of heavy-exploitable mechanics.

In most games with weapons, there is always 1 superoverpowederdmegagunofdoom9000 that has unlimited range, ridiculous damage, faster than minigun firerate, usually unlimited or recharging ammo or lots of it lying around everywhere, and it's just waiting in a golden statue in the middle of an open field, waiting to be found by you.In most games, there is hardly any challenge to get these superweapons!
I still remember a game called Area 51, it had an alien bubble gun, and you only found THREE pieces of ammo for it in the entire game!It was ridiculously overpowered but you could only use it 3 times, those 2 extra ammo being extremely hard to get (having to pass a 4 clawed mutant with laser repeaters and RPG armed sharks ).Now thats what I call an appropriate for OP gun
PS:Just had to rant about this.Since when have you seen a weegee weapon in the old mario games?

Even great classics were flawed. Fallout 2, for instance. You could get Advanced Power Armor and lots of OP weapons at level one because there was SUPPOSED to be a level check at the Navarro sidequest, however, a bug prevented it from working
But even if it worked flawlessly, the gambling was broken (30k in 1 hour with 2 LUCK and not even a single point put into gambling was easy as snow, I mean, all you needed to do was to quicksave, play roulette, randomly select bets using the highest amounts of money you can place and wait. If you won, you'd get a lot cash. If not, just reload. Then just go to san fran and get yourself stacked with vindicator miniguns and power armors.
Or you can just save the game and steal the stuff from the drawers in san fran. Or whatever.
You say it's realistic? No, because it's TOO DAMN EASY!!!

actually some games are also hard because of hard controls.
if I remember well, in the 1st tomb raider, lara would jump like 1s after you press the button. which was like super frustrating sometimes.
in metal gear solid 2 and 3 you have to hold like 10 buttons at the same time to manage an aimed shot
in XIII, automatic weapons have a hell of a lot of recoil. but bots will always fire them with perfect accuracy.

Quote: I was thinking the other day that (console) video games used to be much harder than they are today. When I was kid playing games on the NES and SNES, I remember feeling that those games were hard. Today's games are easy by comparison.
What do you think - have video games gotten easier than they used to be?
It's hard to say, especially as it would require to play a lot of games before be able to make it general, and also be able to take into consideration that the person who plays have changed as well.
I remember playing lots of games when I was younger, many of them I completed, but they seemed hard, yet I did overcome it.
Now I did try those games again, and they seemed very easy, the only hard part was not during "stupid" mistakes, which was easy to do if you would get impatient.
However I have also tried some of the newer games, and I must admit the never consoles don't appeal to me at all, I've tried some few of the new consoles and not only do I find the controlling system weird, I find it hard to see what's happening in the game, and often I see something coming towards me, but do not react, and I think it's because it just doesn't seem real enough, yet it makes it very hard for me to get anywhere in such a game, it's like I partly fall asleep while playing. Maybe if I played ofter it would dissapear, who knows.
Though the type of hardness that I felt when I was younger, is something I think I'd not be able to deal with today, it'd be too hard, and thereby you could also ask, if eventhough I've got smarter, and can easier solve games if I send my mind to it, I'd maybe have been more capable to get over any given challenge when I was younger.
So all in all, no I don't think the games were harder back then, but I can only talk for the games I did play back then, so most likely I've no clue on the difference on back then and today.
