It was the difficulty setting, in the game, with the easy mode XD
Just joking, I really don't play many old games other than heroes of Might and Magic and DooM, never really have, after all I am 12.
But the easy modes in games such as Left 4 Dead and Call of Duty and Fallout 3 are ridiculously easy in comparison to the easy modes in the old games I have played.

My views have changed and I've come up with a new statement.
Modern games have adapted to fit the home enviroment as opposed to the arcades from way back when.

@Keksimaton: I challenge your statement and present you with XCom. 
That game (well two of them actually, unless you want to count the third one that was meh) was god-awfully hard. Never did beat it. 
To be fair though, I think the following is a valid statement (and somewhat agrees with yours):
Game developers are catering more to the casual player than to the hardcore player nowadays.
Which is good and all mind you, but I enjoy a game that makes me want to destroy it every once in a while.

Oh... my.... goodness. Hardest ranked game ever: Battletoads for NES. That game cut into the very soul of a young and innocent child ... and that child was me. That game was so incredibly hard, and yet so incredibly awesome. It was like growing up in Sparta. Schools should make that a mandatory game for every child. It will prune them into a vineyard of perfection; either that or they'll jump into oncoming traffic.

Yeah Battletoads for NES was among the sickest, hardest games.
The hardest is probably I wanna be the guy, though.
