Spelling on the Internet
I am just wondering how many people agree with my view of some internet users' spelling being TOTALLY CRAP.
When saying this, I don't mean, "u" or "r", which are just slack abbreviations, I mean things like..
"Then" instead of "Than"
"There" instead of "Their or They're"
and various other.
I am not criticising people who make typos, just the people who may be much older than me, and yet still can't spell things you learnt in primary school right.
Now I just have to sit back, press post, and wonder whether people will agree with me or I shall get flamed?
I'd go seek out a post that had an error like this but then I would surely get flamed.
Maybe I should get one from another board, lol.

Yeah, you are right there, actually was trying to look up stats to back up number of native english users and I was pleasantly surprised.
Internet Statistics (from World Lingo Statistics):
"There are approximately 172 million English speakers and 163 million non-English speakers online"
"50.4% of Web Users speak a native language other than English"
Sheesh, more than half of the internet speaks a native language other than english.
Anyway, back onto my topic. Anyone who has grown up in an 90% or higher English-speaking country (US, UK, Australia, etc) should NOT have problems spelling things like that on the internet presuming they are over the age of say, 10, which most internet users are.

W00t, sounded like a flame. Heh, you should have read my post, if you were so hasty to say that. I said that anyone who grows up in an English speaking country WILL learn English almost definitely, although they can learn other languages (I know people who learn Chinese as well as English and they are very good English speakers.)

Actually, you posted 2 minutes earlier than I. I were reading the first posts. Besides, I`m not starting flame here. I just thought it could be fun to see our spelling and grammar checked.

er, excuse me for butting in...
but usually, non-native speakers make less mistakes when talking or typing in a language other than their native one... I don't know why, but it is a fact...

Actually, you're right, that seems to be true.
And typing that, I remembered another simple error, heh.
"Your" instead of "You're"
I wonder what speed most of you type at? I certainly don't type slowly, and I do not make BAD BAD errors.

You know, this is the first thread I have actually started on this forum, quite an unusual topic. I think i'm up to about 18 or something posts, too lazy to go check my profile again. Oh well.
I think my average typing speed is around 55-60 words per minute (WPM), with my record being somewhere around 73 WPM and 97% accuracy (using one of those silly typing speed things).

...hmm, the way I see it, usually it's that when you compare the two (native Enlish speakers and not) it's either that those who don't speak it natively either speak it much worse then those who do, or speak it much better...or least a a little better when it comes to those small gramatical decisions...
...as for myself though, I live in a hole and I don't know how to speak any languages, and when I actually do type, I usually don't give it much thought and just let my fingers do the work, so even if it doesn't make any sense in the rare cases that I re-read it, I don't really care

My native language is--um--American! You see, us Americans spell things differently than the English. Like, for example, we spell cookie, "C-O-O-K-I-E." Whereas the English spell cookie, "B-I-S-C-U-I-T." By the way Hyperion, you misspelled criticize.

...hmm, I can't think of anything else at the moment, but there are quite a few of those minor differences, like between color and colour...same with grey and gray...

Apparently "sharking" has different meanings. Something to do with what Amaricans call mud sharks?
In the UK "sharking" is trying to "pull" in a way that ones friends find comically obvious.

I DID NOT MISSPELL CRITICISE
Just because you are a damn American who uses Z instead of S in everything, doesn't mean I do?
After all, I still spell "favorite" favourite and "color" colour.

...and I've never heard of the term/expression/whatever "sharking" before in my life...but if you asked me, without knowing anything about it, I'de say it had something to do with sharks

I was only criticising Gootch who said I misspelt "criticize". Wouldn't have a clue what sharking meant (not that I care..)
