We have just released a new major update, VCMI 1.6, with improved AI, better upscaler, Heroes Chronicles support, game statistics and much more!

The most notable features of this release are:

- Our adventure map AI (Nullkiller AI) has been greatly improved, and some improvements have also been made to the combat AI. Expect even more adventure Map AI improvements in upcoming 1.6.X releases.

- VCMI now supports the xBRZ upscaling filter, similar to the one used by HD Mod. In addition to that, VCMI now supports high resolution graphical assets that can be provided by mods. If you own the HD Edition, you can use this exporter to create a mod for VCMI with HD Edition assets: https://github.com/Laserlicht/vcmi_hd_mod A more user-friendly integration of the HD Edition into VCMI is planned for future updates, possibly in 1.7.

- The game will now display statistics after scenario completion, such as amount of resources owned by players, army strength or hero experience over time (and numerous other parameters).

- If you own Heroes Chronicles on gog.com, it is now possible to import these campaigns into VCMI using the "backup offline installer" from gog.com and the "import files" option in the VCMI launcher.

- VCMI now has its own version of spell research, which is disabled for SoD and can be enabled by installing the HotA mod.

- Added quick spell selection panel in combat, including the option to bind spells to hotkeys.

- Pressing Alt on the adventure map will now display an overlay highlighting all interactive objects.

We have also managed to maintain save compatibility with 1.5 releases, so you can continue your game if you wish. However, it is recommended that you start a new game or restart a scenario for campaigns (or finish your ongoing 1.5 games first).

We occasionally play this with friends, me on linux and they on windows and everything works very well.
Very excited for the AI improvements!

Impressive changelog! Great to see VCMI becoming more and more potent with better AI, spell research support and Chronicles integration.
In few years, we could perhaps be able to play with Cove & Factory (HotA) + Palace (DoR) in one setup

Is it possible to implement the use of (vector) fonts for the UI in place of the old low-res bitmap characters?
For the purpose of crisp text rendering even on HiDPI screens similar to the ingame-inspired creature stat windows in the H3 wiki, for instance [url=https://heroes.thelazy.net/index.php/Gog_and_Magog]https://heroes.thelazy.net/index.php/Gog_and_Magog[/url]

Is that what is shown in the screenshot linked above or is it the HD bitmap font from the HD edition?
A pity HD edition only has got RoE objects.

We already do!

Not sure which settings were used for each screenshot linked above, since some of those were made by different people at different time, but VCMI can (and does) uses vector .ttf fonts when upscaling is active. HD Edition is not required for them. You can also force VCMI to either always use .ttf or always use H3 fonts in settings if you wish to.

It will look differently than on thelazy, since we use Noto Serif font, while wiki seems to be using system-provided Sans font, like Arial, but if you really want to you can replace our font with your own.

Fonts from HD Edition are not supported though. And not sure if we even need to, since those fonts looks to be rasterized version of some other font.

Hotfix 1.6.3 has been released - fixes AI issues and improves AI speed (performance). Also improves right-click popup functionality for obelisks and keymaster related map objects

hello everyone!

just wanted to say thanx for the hard work coz i have been playing vcmi for couple years and damn it has come along way

cant help but ask, did the original authors and creators abandoned the towns released in vcmi?

for instance i dont know if its a bug or not, the lvl7 dragon ability "50% firewall chance"  from retreat town never triggered for me


aslo, i LOVE highlands and i appreciate having 2 lvl7 units which is awesome, but im not gonna lie the magma model and animations need rework

highlands took me right back to h5 magma days!


lastly, is there any place i can find skill distribution for heroes of these towns? like heroes.thelazy.net shows you all the possible skills that you might get and their percentage when leveling up

Hi!

Mods that are available in mod repository are generally maintained, and should work with 1.6. However it is possible that there are some bugs, especially in less popular mods.

Skill chances - we do have some mod information autogenerated on our website: https://vcmi.eu/Mod%20Repository/Overview/
However, skill weights for heroes are not included at the moment. You can find them either online or inside installed mod on your system (not possible on mobiles though).

For example, here you can find weights for skills for heroes from Highlands:
