Solution to the Zombie dilemma!
Necro players! Don't you hate how weak your tier 2's are? Haven't you always wished for something better or at least something more useful? Well I have an idea!
Anybody ever watched Dawn of the Dead or played Left 4 Dead? Well in both products, the zombies run fast as hell! However, instead of just making the zombies super fast, why not make an upgrade that is?
Also instead of the fat green guy with a cleaver image. Why not have them actually look more like fallen warriors, but still with flesh on like normal zombies do.
Then definitely make their stats more worthwhile, in fact, you may be able to make a mod off of this, by using the squires or vindicators as a base. Then you got yourself a more standard type of soldier. In that case, make Skeletons a more ranged type of creature. If you want more info on that part ask me.
As for the upgrade, make a sweet fast version called a Ghoul. They have lighter armor (slightly lower defense), but greater attack, initiative, and a really fast speed. An infection type ability wouldn't hurt either.
About the alternate, why not make a low level dark mage with a sword or something? Like a mummy, but slightly faster, physically weaker, but can still cast hex or some weak dark spells. Like an armored zombie (my version) that doubles as a weak lich basically.
I did not know whether to put this in the modder's workshop or the Homm 6 place, so I put it here. Enjoy discussing and debating my ideas, friends.

I don't like zombies (really, who does), but really any faction has this slow, tankish walker that really isn't good for much else than guarding your ranged units. Enraged really needs to provide more incentive to attack them first, or something.
Or maybe we should just make a mod to replace enraged with an ini bonus across the board.

How about you make their ability like the old ghosts of heroes 1 and 2, for each creature they kill they get a creature in their ranks. It wouldn't be hugely overpowered because zombies are only level 2 creatures. Creeping level 1 creatures would give the Necro an early game advantage, but that's what the town is currently about. Lots and lots of little minions and somewhat weaker higher level creatures that support them.
I think they should probably look more like peasants though, because Zombies are better known for rampaging through the local populace than anything.
It would be interesting to see versions that run fast as an alternate upgrade (if the next game has 2 upgrade paths like Tote did that would be nice) in order to choose slow, high HP zombies or quick running, normal initiative, middle HP zombies.

but undead warriors just look so much cooler!!! You should understand that! Please, tell me, what looks cooler? A fat green zombie with an oversized knife or an awesome looking undead warrior with totally sweet looking armor and an awesome sword (maybe a shield too)?!?!

I quite like your idea and frankly some spicing up the lineup would be for the better. Strangely though since I started using power of speed/endurance tactics with necro I have come to like the zombies we have now. Outrageously tough, slow yet they pack a punch. Strength in numbers!

You have not felt their strength when 200 of them kill 7 paladins that were foolish enough to come close. When under those circumstances or under Orson they are a force to be feared.

Maybe the basic ones good look more peasant-y, though a bit leaner. Upgrades perhaps could have some armour, though I think that they'd still be no faster than squires.
Also that last picture you posted looks like a demon or maybe a vampire more than a zombie.

Zombies are like Treants or Hydras in minature. Neglect the for too long, and might not be able to kill them at all!
BTW: Why is this in the Temple?

I think the zombies are fine the way they are. Necro needs them as a tank in order to survive long enough for spell casting.
Also like elvin said, do not underestimate their power
If they last until the end of the battle, they can be VERY hard to kill... if the necro hero casts vampirism on them near the end of a battle, its over

yeah true, but in the early game, they can just be so lame and useless. Besides, with this they'd act more offensively, while still having their toughness.

In my opinion, the Zombie shouldn't be that much different than in Heroes 3, or Doom 3. The green stitched up fat man in Heroes 5 is pretty lame. Looks more like Frankenstein.

I think that's an awesome idea. I mean I had this idea for long that there should be a fast alternate to it, these mutant zombies in movies now days, but I didn't knew how to ballance it out, cause obviously unless you are defending your castle, you are going to choose the fast zombies. So here is my idea:
Zombie
Zombies in rugged commoner clothes, wielding clevers. They should resemble the tier unit of the Castle, no matter if they're fat or not.
They have the usual stats, and the pleague ability.
Walking Dead
Now these should wear some armor, and perhaps fith with a huge axe, atleast something like in H3.
Speciality is the like the Ghosts' from H2, we could call it Zombie Pleague, or somehting more creative. These units are still slow and have low initiative.
Blood Zombie
Their flesh turns red, and they have some armore merged with their body, they have a bestial mutant feeling, and they don't carry weapons, possibly some claw like metal emerging from their fore arms.
They have high initiative and good speed, but they also have the "Blood Rush" ability thats decrases their initiative by one for each round it, how ever if they attack someone it goes back to the max. They also have "Corpse Eater" which grants them every curse/bless that the enemy stack had.

The ghosts and vampires are already fast and have good initiative. I don't think zombies really need to become fast too. But it should be ok as long as you reduce the hitpoints and not make them so tough. I would rather hae the tough zombies to guard the archers and liches myself.
And I think if you do some playtesting you will find that giving zombies the old HOMM self-replicating ghost ability would be very overbalancing. The necro has raise dead I don't really have any trouble creeping with him.
Between raise dead, vampires, and self-raising zombies I don't think the necro could lose.
