You could also make something more drastic, like lowering HP of one of the stacks much more and then give it Scavenger ability, if you really want to have something that preys off dead flesh. Might be imbalanced, but might also give you an incentive to take them out fast. Still, Raise Dead + Scavenger is probably a bad idea, but someone could test it.

yeah, or give them a very low grade vampirism effect, but with retaliation from enemies.

oh yes, it's assault, not brutality (the ability is called "brutalité" in french, that's why) it's the ability which gives you a chance to attack twice (and weaken the enemy twice)
in homm3, I tried to improve the zombies so that each time they take their turn, they have 20% chance to cast animate dead on themselves for free. I don't remember if it worked. but I know I managed to make the unicorn cast random beneficial spells on itself for free each time it took a turn.
I thought about giving vampirism to zombies, but it didn't seem so interesting. they don't deal much damage, so I'm not sure it would be so helpful, unless you have a hell of a lot of them.

yeah, but it'd still make them better, and they're best in large numbers anyways.

Personally I vote for the fat guys. Especially since corpses actually bloat somewhat like that irl. There are more than enough spiffy warrior types with shiny metal in this game, and the game industry at large.
And in a faction of evil undead, there should always be a place for bloated corpses dressed in rags which slowly lumber about with crude weapons, relying on brute force, numbers and disease distribution to make their mark.
If any change is to be made, I'd rather suggest we revert to the vampires of old Heroes 3: cadaveric, monstrously disfigured and dressed in either rags or robes that are midway between comic and scary, utterly sexless and above all else they are mobile only because they turn into bats. After all, in its traditional incarnations the vampire is anything BUT attractive and dashing, it's an undead creature which viciously attacks the living for their blood with very little science to its madness.
Edit: Also, zombies are a potentially very useful unit outright, and even if not they can act as your tactical reserve. They are rarely attacked and can multiply even faster than skellies if you're careless with those and depending on what neutrals you attack. In a big battle when all your other units as well as the enemy's are either dead or battered, even your lifestealing vamps are thinned to a tithe, you might find that your zombie stack is still hardly scratched, and your victory is secured because nothing can deal with them now.
They're OK as they are. Sprucing up their specials or changing to better ones would certainly not hurt them, but it's not really needed.
