Empire Earth
This is a forum for discussing anything to do with the Empire Earth series(mainly the original+Art of Conquest expansion, but the others can have a little discussion, as long as the original stays the main focus). I mean anything(except flaming, goes without saying), including(but not limited to):strategy, ratings, reasons for liking/hating it, questions on a unit, favorite moment, bad beats, etc., etc. So, go wild(as long as you stay on topic)!

I love EE1. EE2 was not bad either bud EE3 sucked IMO. I especially like the Russian campaign on EE1.

Yeah, I never played the campaigns much, I tried the Greek one, but I couldn't get past the second scenario...
So, anyone know the ultimate cheat? If you don't, it's "my name is methos". It gives you 100k of each resource and toggles fog of war and instant build.

EE looked like a great game, and probably is, but I don't have many fond memories of it. I found the learning curve was steeper compared to AoE, since EE had more complexity and gameplay features. The 3D visuals were nice, but I generally prefer the feel of older games like AoK and Warcraft 2. I found it frustrating how groups of bulky units like ships sluggishly moved within a formation, sometimes rotating or pausing at odd moments.
Maybe I'm just not that good at playing, but I found the enemy AI really annoying. They always manage to kill or disperse a good number of my workers because they invaded from some odd direction. If my troops aren't right there waiting for them, then I'm bound to lose some civilians. Since resource collection can take a while, my supplies are often too low to mass-produce troops for defense, which seems necessary considering how large the AI's invasion forces seem to be. Doing all of that while hoping to save enough for an Epoch upgrade can be very hard.
I played a few campaign missions, but they failed to keep me interested for long. Although the plots were occasionally interesting, I normally prefer playing a straightforward game. Moving a special hero unit around from Point A to Point Z with a single bodyguard isn't my idea of RTS fun. I played the first five or so missions of the Greek campaign (yes, I needed some online tips in order to finally beat the difficult second mission), but then I stopped and lost my progress.
I seriously look down on the usage of cheats in games, except for map testing. Speaking of which, EE is probably one of the few RTS games where I've never attempted to make my own maps. I find 3D worlds somewhat cool, but also somewhat daunting when it comes to designing my own missions.
Oh, and a few other things. I've had several instances of crashing out of games at random moments. I turned off the Autosave feature, but I still remember crashing to the desktop every so often. I also encountered an issue where certain recent saved games got corrupted, which was certainly disheartening.
Since I'm not really a fan, I only have the original EE and no expansions or sequels.

Were there 3 difficulty levels? If so, I tried all except the hardest. It's been a very long time since I last played, so I may have been thinking about the medium difficulty. All I remember is that basically every random map I tried was a challenge.
There was one game where I started on a small island and I surrounded my beaches with towers all around; I lasted for a while in that one.

Yeah, you probably didn't have enough settlements. You need to have a settlement close enough to any resources so that you can see a citizen go from either a resource to a settlement/town center/capitol or vice versa within a slow 10-second count.

I actually agree with Guitarguy. My first few times playing, I found it was A LOT harder than Age of Kings and I got defeated a fair few times.

I haven't won a single match on maximum difficulty. The AI is actually smart, not just loading troops.

Actually, I was pretty good about putting the Settlements close enough to the mines. If two mines or food patches where close enough together to share one Settlement, even better! I'd populate/upgrade the Settlements to improve production and everything. Unfortunately, since you can't build Walls until a later Epoch (maybe I should mention that I like to start in the first two Epochs), that means the enemy could attack from a number of directions, and I'd be unsure of where to defend. It's easy to defend a few select choke points, but the wilderness around my starting bases were fairly open.
If I were to play again, I'd try some new strategies. Maybe an alarm system would help, like building Towers or Houses on the farthest reaches of my frontiers so that I'll get an early warning when the AI attacks. That way, my troops will have more time to reach the enemy wherever they invade from, and my mines/Settlements can keep working in peace.

Also, you should try to play as a civilization that gives you a Hunting and Gathering bonus so that you can get through the first two epochs quickly. I have the strategy guide from the Gold Edition, that's where I'm getting most of my information. Also, if you think the AI is hard, when(and if) you start playing online against other people, you are going to be toast...

Aww! I remember that I played this when I was like 8-9 years old ^^
I thought the graphics were epic.
Now I look back at old screenshots - a find out that there are two sequels - and the graphics are horrible xD
And yet I play WoW and think that LOTRO and WAR looks horrible...

That goes without saying (and as an HC member, I'd know). I've no interest in multiplayer. If I eventually beat the AI, that's usually fine for me. Although, judging by how busy I am these days, I doubt I'll even be able to play singleplayer. At this point, it's probably too late for me to be a serious gamer.
