Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic

How does this game compare to the Heroes of Might and Magic series?. Is it similar to Heroes IV?, I'm thinking of trying out the demo.

Edit : No not still in development, but no demo that I can find

Edit 2 : Have you tried Gamespot?  www.gamespot.com I can't access it at work.

The game was released in 2003, but they may have not made a demo for it.

Edit: Nope, it's not at GameSpot or FilePlanet.

I have played this game since its release, and it is one of the most amazing games I've played. Lacking a little in graphics, but still very addicitive. Its battlefields are immense in size, its sieges very balanced, and it has a lot of choice. Several mods exist, especially Unnofficial Patch v1.4, that enhance the game with many extras. Go to the main site to find them. I rather suggest Heavengames, a good site for many of the genre.

There ere no units in stacks, units gain medals for experience, u must pay your troops daily, there is no town screen, everything is build from town menu, summoned creatures remain, but u must pay them mana daily, shooters have 3 shots, you can moove them and lose part of shots, units have many abilities, artifacts give your hero more of them, each unit has its move on map, mixing slow and fast units will give you less move, mixing flying units will give you flying  gruop on map. Thats the most of differences i think .

Age of Wonders II: The Wizards Throne

Edit: Well, I tried out the AoW2 demo first. The games interesting and has nice looking graphics (the interface & adventure map,) the exception is the combat screen. Everything was fine until the first battle, then the graphics spoiled it for me.

Here's the games main website, you can selct between AoWI & II.

Creatures are small and aren't very detailed, though the large battlefield is allright I guess.

I forgot to mention that the music adds nice atmosphere to the game.

It has been my experience that you remember a game having good graphics, then you play it again, and see that its not as good as you thought.

But, all things aside, the music is probably the best feature of Age of Wonders, because its brilliantly orchestrated. But I don't think that wins the game, because I still play it, and it may have slightly mediocre graphics, but I play it because its pretty amazing in style and gameplay.

Maybe someday they'll revive it in 3-D.

The game is vastly different to heroes, a lot more micromanagement and rules. It is an interesting alternative, this game kept me occupied for a long long time along with AoW2.

What to know.

- Your wizard never leaves your town, he just stays there to expand his magical influence on the land through a wizard's tower. If he is killed re respawns there.

- You can get heroes to lead your army but they appear randomly, though there is a spell call hero. They take part in battles like in H4 but they are more like stronger units that level up.

- Spells and skills are researched, that means it can take a while..

- Your mana is very limited unless you research a skill for that, you won't have the satisfaction of casting nonstop unless you play a later stage in a campaign.

- Armies move like in H4, they are independent of heroes.

- You can only have several units in your army where unlike heroes each unit can never have more than 1 creature in it. No stacks of 100 creatures. Which is actually good because:

- In towns you can order either troops or buildings, that may take more than one turn. A tough unit may even take 5 turns to recruit, depending on town level of course.

- Also each unit has different specials, while a cavalier is a lot stronger than a spear wielding unit the latter does extra dmg to mounted units. Flyers can only be attacked by ranged/magical attacks, melee units can only hit them in retaliation. Etc.

- Also each unit can both move and attack. Your movement has 3 levels, if you move a little the arrows show green, a little more and they are yellow and if you move long they turn red. Now if you are in the green zone you make 3 attacks, in yellow 2 attacks, in red 1 attack.

- Also attacks are all a chance to hit or fail, no damage reduction. If your attack is same as target's defense it's 50-50 to hit. Ranged units have reduced accuracy according to distance and magic attacks work like attack/defense except they must defeat unit resistance.

- If more than a group of units is adjacent to your own when battle starts they are also dragged into battle Battlefield is huge.

- For instance towns have to be guarded from 4 directions, it is truly epic. Opponent may split his forces and attack from 2 directions but he has to break the gates. Some units can demolish walls or others climb them.

- Summoned units range from lowly magical servants to phoenixes but they require mana upkeep per turn. They are typically summoned outside of combat within your magic domain.

- The wizard's tower allows your wizard to expand the areas in which he can cast spells, if your units are outside that limit he cannot help them. That magic domain allows advanture spells that destroy crops(therefore less gold for enemy town), do fire damage per turn, curse all enemies within, bombard enemy towns etc

- And of course a lot more factions than heroes. I think they are 12 in shadow magic.

Oh, i remember, ive summoned a frog thing... i positioned it on the wall of neutral, good defended city. The computer players tried to kill the frog, but the neutral group always participed in battle with them, and killed the enemys troops leaving the frog... that was funny

There are 15 factions in Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic !

They are split by their alignment: five are good, five are neutral, and five are evil. That ranges from pure good all the way to pure evil.

Each race has characteristics inherent in their cities and units. Goblins expand the city very fast, but they are generally weaker in melee than others. Many have Poison attacks to cope with disadvantage to weaken opponents to their level.

Elves, denizens of the forest, have no penalty walking through forests, and many have holy properties. Their cities generate extra mana due to their sylvan bonds.

Equivalently, Wizards also have their characteristics. Vorsar, mage of the humans, can amplify his overland and battlefield magic to greater damage to enemies. Fangir, lord of the Dwarves, can add productivity to his cities, naturally speeding construction.

Anything else you'd like to know? It seems me and Elvin have played this game for a long time.

Thing is if you played in last difficulty in a normal random map you couldn't always win, it required extreme skill Oh yes and how could I forget about creating alliances and breaking them. Just amazing.

I'd start with AoW 2 if only for the campaigns. Shadow magic has better balance and some changed units, more spells etc but AoW 2 campaigns are too much fun to pass up, at least for my tastes Not easy but they helped you learn the game and experience most things.

Random thought, anarchy spell to cause an opponent's town to rebel is totally awesome

I like simultaneous turns because it adds the skill factor to put your move in before the opponent, and that requires a good player.

Sithie's 6 Random Things about this Game

1: The Orc's level 4 unit, the Gutton, can swallow enemy units whole!

2: Tremors really damages enemy towns, and can destroy most of their productions.

3: You can make your own wizard from a picture!

4: Artifacts can give bonuses anywhere from Waterwalking all the way to Physical Immunity!

5: The Shadow Lord is the largest unit in the game, standing well over five times as tall as any unit.

6: There are a race of Frostlings that can tame Mastadons.

Oh, and the Sphinx can mind control enemies. Just evil.

Basilisk can Dominate his enemies too.
Also, isnt that giant fish-ship bigger? That flying fish, who can take your units inside...
