Probably Telsek, Jhora and hmm Sinitar? Or Naadir. I play all factions and am not particularly tied to any of them though I have a soft spot for academy and orcs

She's a secret ace that nobody uses. Double gold from peasants, super peasants, and a starting skill set that lets you get divine guidance at level 4 = super creeping crossbowman at week 1. She's overall my favorite hero even if Haven isn't my favorite faction.

(My top two factions are tied)
Haven: Maeve or Rutger
Like the concept of Maeve's ability, though I have not found it hugely powerful (And I think she purrty ) and I like rutger because I like to move more. I like Haven because I like Defense mixed with light magic, and I find the unit and faction abilities cool (go go training!).
Inferno: Grok or Nymus
Grok can move a lot, like rutger (and he can teleport his creatures day one, just too cool). Nymus I feel fits the flavor of a Demon Lord, A guy who knows how to summon more demons, is a good demon leader (and he's insane at high levels with master gating). Inferno has a play style I enjoy a lot, you kind of make your own power strategy with that faction, because it doesn't have any hands down abuse-able crazy units (at least in my mind).
Academy: Havez (Gremlins ) and Nathir (go go fireball)
I like Academy because of the ability to make equipment type stuff for your units and the huge magic options, which make me feel like my hero is doing more in battle than just sitting there (for me its a very warm feeling seeing that my hero does something big on his own).

Fortress - Svae, becuase the early game lightning bolts plus direct route to the Master skills make her very fun
Inferno - Nebiros, hands down. I love his ability, and he tends to gain Luck very quickly. And disabling tactics is evil.
Necropolis - Zoltan, by a smidge. He's a good hero to have as a Mentor, and his special is really good against other Necropolis or Dungeon. But, I really loved Markal.

Stronghold - Haggash. Easy tripple flaming Ballista which leads to much easier creeping. Or Kragh. With high leadership, he can just tear things apart, and keep the enemy from acting very often.
Academy - Jhora or Havez
Sylvan - Wyngaal. Get a few +init or -init for enemy items and basically it is gg.
Now if we are talking campain...Gotai is hands down my favorite of any.

Zoltan as a mentor? He cannot even get mentoring...
Did you mean that he's a good hero to be mentored?

Inferno - Either Nebiros or Grok, easy to understand why.
Stronghold - Kragh, a slayer for creeping is very useful when used correctly, and Stronghold is just sooo cool.
Necropolis - Either Kaspar or Naadir, Naadir's ability is more versatile, but Kaspar's is more powerful, not to mention that Naadir automatically starts off with Dark and Summoning, the Necro bigshot magic schools.

Sylvan - Dirael (like the concept, love the gameplay)
Dungeon - Lethos (same)
I have a soft spot for these two factions, they remind me of old heroes 3 quirks I guess (Dirael reminds me of the conflux faction, Lethos' gameplay reminds me a lot of my old tactics).
I like all the other factions more or less equally except Haven (because of the story). Although I can be a nut when it comes to numbers (and Haven has some good numbers) I have a thing against holier-than-thou type thingies.
If I were to pick a 3rd though it would be
Necropolis - Deidre (always fun to play with enemy luck and morale)

Probably my favorite due to "fun factor" would be Zehir because that Master of Elements thing was great since it's so rare that elementals show up for any period of time.
I normally like the Haven heroes though. Haven is a solid town all the way through.
