Quote: May I persume that each character has some basic elemental abilities by default?
Sure, why not.
It begins.
Edit: At some point, someone should get the ability to transform into a bear. Just a future plot point to consider.

Now, this seems very intresting, so I might join this one.

Okay, I may yet try this, and I think I know what I'm gonna go for.
Name: Xenostenes
Age: twentyish
Sex: male
Philosophical title (e.g. Socratic, Zenoite, etc.), if any: Cynic
Philosophical abilities (if any): is this where the magic goes? Various self-preservation. If it needs a fancy philosophical name, let's go with Homomensura. Things like high-speed running, conjuring-like scrounging and miraculous agility. Abilities trigger almost exclusively in the face of imminent personal danger.
Other abilities (if any): dialectics - casually challenges the philosophical views of others
hypocrisy - blatantly disregards his own as "needed"
being an inconvenience - never a real problem, but once he's stuck to you, you'll spend your nights wishing he'd just die already.
Alignment (optional): Am I allowed to be chaotic-lawful?
Anyway, can I know more about this "Royal Philosopher" dealie?

Philosophical abilities are generally supposed to be more powerful than that, although I suppose with creativity you could make that work.
The way I have it thought out, Royal Philosophers start at the School around the age of 10, and study there for a while, learning philosophy, combat, etc. (The effects of Philosophy are really the manipulation of reality in a minor and specific way.) Then it is customary for them to go into the service of Philosopher-King Thales (a Royal Philosopher of your age would have been just old enough to do so). Then they typically do whatever they want, whether it's wandering the world, being involved somehow in the military, philosophical research, or waiting to inherit some noble title (if they're children of the nobility).
Of course, not all Philosophers have gone to the School and certified by Philosopher-King Thales. There are self-taught/rogue ones, and, while they are legal as long as they're not doing something else that's illegal, they're not held in as high esteem as Royal Philosophers.

how do the pendant things work? When were they handed to us? Are they trademarks of the royal philosophers? Do they have any powers?

Regarding the pendants. We got them upon graduation from the School. In the days of P-K Thalos, they were the mark of a Royal Philosopher - one that went against the P-K would have his pendant taken away, and independent Philosophers never had them in the first place (unless they stole one, of course).
The populace in general considers the pendants to be the source of the Philosophers' power (as Royal Philosophers tend to be much more powerful than self-taught ones, the assumption holds). As for what the pendants actually do - absolutely nothing. They serve as an identifying mark for a Royal Philosopher, and that's it. At least, the pendant by itself won't do anyone any good. However, some Philosophers use their pendant to amplify their power in some way (for example, using it to focus on, etc).

In the future, though, I hope to avoid explanations like this. Let this world be defined through all of its players, not just me. If you think you can come up with something good, go ahead. If you're apprehensive, discuss it in the OOC. You don't have to ask me, though.

philosophical title: pick any philosophy
philosophical abilty: pick abilities tht have a link with your philosophy
For instance, I took the stoic philosophy and because they despise emotion, I made his powers only work when he has his emotions under control. Stoics also were very concerned about the fate of mankind and very determinist, so I gave him the ability to atch a few seconds into the future (very practical in sword fights.)
