I did create something to start with. I made a plot outline that megaupload says nobody has downloaded. I decided to start with a story and not a map because last time, one person had the story and the map was never completed because we had a map with 5% of the plot put in.
I can make a general map shape if you want. I have nearly no time as well, but I did a little to start and help. I have an essay to write and a History midterm to study for, and yet I still have enough time to post here and upload an outline.
Please don't use the " I don't have enough time to help" excuse. I will continue my very slow work on the plot with or without your help, although if nobody helps, it's not really a community map.
Quote: @Me: there are faster ways to get red stars than working 8 months/x hours a day for one. Not care about because between me and Heroes it is a long history. 12 years. If 3.59 is not coming out this year, I will certainly stop working on WoG and move elsewhere as I did all that could be done with 3.58.
I have 2 questions.
1: Does this mean that the Stargate:Atlantis map will be your last 3.58f map?
2: Does ERA 1.7 (Which Berserker talked about on the CoreWog forum) count as 3.59 if the answer to the first question is yes?

Your megaupload is wrong, at least me downloaded the thing.
Answers:
1) SGA will be my last 3.58 WoG map yes, if no 3.59 I will go back making maps for SOD and forget WoG.
2) No, ERA is unfinished, difficult install so it does not count unless all the WoG team is polishing it (small chances)

Vancho, megaupload is definitely wrong, I also downloaded your file the day you uploaded it. That site has been buggy lately.
I didn't reply because I'm not good at writing stories. I'm not a native speaker and my stuff suxxorz compared to Corribus' work, for example. In addition, I'm one of those players who just click "OK" when a huge text box appeares in-game. So sue me! I read quest messages, if that counts. Anyway, sometimes an interesting idea and an introduction day 1 are enough.
And I think I've come up with an interesting idea. (It has probably been done before, but who cares. )
Let's do a Caribbean map. The player starts on the small but notorious island of Tortuga, with one ship and a bunch of Rogues. Rogues could be his specialty, while Navigation and sea artifacts could play major role, unlike in most standard maps. The player must make his way by pillaging other isles and Spanish ships. Now, those can be merchant ships... but also the Armada sent by the King to hunt down the pirates. Those could pop up from one-way portals in all four corners of the map. Obviously the goal is not to defeat the King and his Armada, but to survive long enough to reveal the puzzle map and find the buried treasure (what else? ).
Aside from the unique specialty, we could also script a new secondary skill, something like Fame maybe? Salamandre, can we replace the pic of a secondary skill? I'm thinking of Jolly Roger instead of... Mysticism perhaps? Or we can simply add a scripted event that informs the player every time his Fame gets +1. With each level of Fame, the hero's Rogues Pirates get a new cool ability (Poison, Fear, No Retal, whatever can be scripted). Is there a Pirate def? From Might and Magic maybe? Can we add a new creature in those four empty Conflux spots? What about a new artifact? Were there two empty slots? Can't remember. What about a gun and an eye patch? We could also use those barrels, they would fit well!
If the settings seem too realistic, we can add some fantasy flavor (e.g. a new hero - a Lizardmen boss, the king of the local swamp, doesn't like your taking over his territory).
All this is just brainstorming, of course - feel free to add/change stuff. Or just forget it all if you have a better idea.
I suggest everyone makes one island, based on the actual Carribeans. Vancho, could you as the project starter provide the layout? It would mean a lot.

Well, that is a better idea than what I had originally thought of. I will re-write a story based on that and upload the rough version soon.

The best way for layout is to find a proper air view of Caribbeans, then upload the bmp into the editor. Then any mapmaker involved can change the terrain style but stick to the original and real layout. Could be extracted from pirates microsoft games. For example:

I don't think my idea is actually better, but more realistic. Your plot sounds very ambitious and I'm not sure anybody on this board is capable of whipping up a fantasy novel. I don't think I have to remind you that was the problem last time.
Speaking of which (and other off topic stuff): QPs are what moderators say, simple as that. It's always been that way. You may not get one for a week of work on a new script, but may get one for a quick reply about minarets in Switzerland. Should maps get QPs? No, but inspiring threads like Sal's should. As for our map, I thought of it as a community activity - and angelito mentioned he might give red stars when it's done. I must admit I agree with him; there are too many unfinished projects in this subforum. So, the bottom line is: Cepheus should get a -QP. Just kidding, I hope our little leprechaun great loremaster is safe and sound... He hasn't been very active lately.
Oh, and Ghost Pirates.

lol, download the picture and fix it to 144x144 before uploading in editor. Took me 4 seconds.
Here is the untagged pic:
As it is only the surface, you can use one idea I had for MM6 WoG map (I worked some time on it): Use one entrance to Tortuga, like a teleporter, then create the Tortuga city in underground so it can be visited. Of course, on the other side you have to create a small city to simulate the big city from underground. Like the cities on Zelda games. (a house on adventure map, you walk in, and find yourself in a big city)

I uploaded it, along with a map picture that I made. I think yours is better, but mine covers a slightly different area. It has less of Mexico and more ocean.
Pick and choose, but I pick yours.

The second is right. Now check the option "allow single squares" and overwrite all the snow with beach or whatever (1x1 or 2x2 tile brush), until there are no more weird things due to converted bmp. It works only if that option is checked.
But I suggest taking some time for finding a good pic. You took the one I goggled in 10 seconds, but I am sure there are much better out.

Cool...perhaps a pirate´s fame could also attract enemies who also are pirates or make you face the spanish(or other nation) law. Which brings another question: is it based in homm universe?
And what about the choice of giving the gold to the crew or pick exp? could also be exploited: if you always pick exp then you could face a riot.
Other things: will the ship movement be limited?is magic available?
Posted some ideas i had while reading, hope you dont mind.

I was thinking something like this:
This screen is shopped, of course. Is it possible to change a secondary skill pic? But your idea looks good too. We could simply use the Jolly Roger pic in text messages.
I love the Charisma part, it could be decisive with some NPCs and add some RPG flavor.
Oh, and dibs on Hispaniola. I've started working on it and will upload my part in a day or two.
It was a good idea to choose an islands map - much less work.

Well here I am, Vancho - your consultant. So what would you like to consult me on?
I did organize, by the way, a (IIDSSM) rather good community-style campaign for H2, so I have some experience with some of the stumbling blocks with this kind of project. Although, in that case there were 6 maps, so everyone could work simultaneously, which helped.

Quote: Is it possible to change a secondary skill pic?
Certainly, your is very good. But if it was me, I would choose the roger pic for experience as having fame points increasing without limit is better for having quests unblocked, new tasks, new abilities. With fame as skill, it goes in no time at expert and then it is over. A mixture between both would be optimal. Charisma could work as casting a spell on adventure map and change neutrals from aggressive to friendly (just to fit with having spell points). Some neutrals would be harder to convert and require more spells points, thus the concept of charisma increasing or being based on fame level.(gaining primary skills is disabled, and based on the amount of fame-->4000 fame=+1 attack, 8000 fame=+1 def or whatever). It is always better to go for the most advanced ideas as a lot can be scripted today.
Example: basic NPC, you cast visions (renamed) and click on creature, it asks 8 mana. Advanced creatures ask 40 mana, latest creatures asks 80 mana for becoming foes. It allows smooth progression and a goal. Only a idea. If have the charisma required, the creature turns from aggressive to friendly and accept to talk/join/give tasks and so on.
Quote: It was a good idea to choose an islands map - much less work.
Making action happen in the waters is not easy to design, storms, disasters, make AI move from a point to another (fixed navigation paths for merchants). What would be nice would be to have a improved boat model, but the size allowed is terribly small and if ignored, it will crash. It would be great to create a special battle field about seas battles, with specific obstacles and layout. But here we go more on a "much work" map. Till now, only consultants posted

update
- finished the island of Hispaniola (Tortuga included)
- changed the file name to "Community Map 2010"
DOWNLOAD
The starting area needs a lot of tweaking, of course. I'll get back to it once we know how the map works as a whole.
So, who's next?
Cuba, Jamaica, New Orleans, Florida or even Mexico sound like fun. It's not much work either.
Just a suggestion: no matter what area you work on, try to check wikipedia for some references. We're talking the Caribbean around 1700, so there's a lot of cool stuff. I included some voodoo, West India Tatalia Company and some Indian Lizardmen natives.
