Jollyjoker ye you are right I forgot that you don't use pirated software.
5400 rpm - ye but maybe they are in raid 0 so they are fast and he won't notice that kind of a difference anyway.

Intel outperforms AMD all the time imo. AMD always release weaker processors for less money. Also keep in mind that the intel processor is core 2 duo which is good nevertheless the other has 300 mhz higher clock. The intel has more cache too

@Jinxer : I have an idea! Tell the sellers that microsoft has officially stopped the support for Vista so it is not ethical to sell laptops with vista...maybe you will get win7 for free installed then

I'm not even close to being up to date on computers, so I won't give any input on that. But since most of the others in this thread probably aren't familiar with the place, Best Buy is NOT a reliable source of information about computers. The key word here is reliable. You might get lucky and get a guy who knows what he's talking about, but you sure can't count on it.

I would be very reluctant to buy a computer from there either, especially if it's them who would do warranty repair. I would never let those guys near a computer of mine.

Yeah, I wouldn't go to a store like that either. I might go to a computer repair place because at least they would know what they're on about, or at least you'd hope so! lol

In general, over here at least, 90% of people who even assemble PCs do not have much idea about it... for example, a repair guy insists that it's a software/virus problem when even the BIOS displays the same symptoms...

I find quality online sites much more reliable, especially since you can read 5-6 opinions and draw your own, not just 1 or 2. Unfortunately you need to have some filtering skills in Google, ignoring the "bad" links.

I might go at this from a different angle.. seems I found a new contender for a laptop which has everything that I want but the memory is only 4GB... so I might try to just buy 8G-DDR3 ( 2x4gb) does anyone know a good site or place that I can get memory like this for under $200 ??

Did you make sure the motherboard supports more than 4GB?

This is the type of Laptop AND it has Windows7 .. 64 Bit... so assumed it had to accept  more

HP Pavilion DV7T 17.3" NOTEBOOK PC (INTEL CORE 2 DUO P8700 2.53GHz)

And there is another laptop from the same company that has identical model name and that one has 8GB ram, just less impressive processor.. So I figure since same model they both can take 8GB...

I guess, the only way to get 2x4 GB DDR3 Notebook Ram for at most 200 $ is buying them from your local fence.

I'm a bit perplexed, right now - it seems that sony Europe sells very different models than Sony USA. I had a pretty fine machine configured at Sony Europe, for a Vaio F series; disregarding the fact that the rig has only 16,4'' display, you'd get this:

•Intel® CoreTM i5 Processor, 2,4 Ghz( This is the brand new one whih runs up to nearly 3 Ghz)
•Legal Windows® 7 Home Premium 64bit
•Grau
•500 GB Serial ATA (7200 U/Min)
•6 GB 1066MHz DDR3-SDRAM
•Blu-ray Disc(TM) Writer
•16.4'' LCD, 1920x1080+ Camera
NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 330M 1GB

This would be manufactured for you for € 1079 (and you might get something off when phone-ordering), which would be an easy buy in Europe - try to get a comparable machine for that money (note that BLUE-RAY WRITER, the Display, and so on).

Now, in the US prices are comparable (just in Dollars), however, Sony Style US is offering completely different machines there; you don't get the i5 Intel. for example, but only the i7 and so on, which is a bit of a letdown.

Yes. The thing is, that in the US the thing would cost about the same in Dollars, maybe a 100 more. However, SonyStyle US doesn't offer that configuration, nor anyone else there.

I have a high-end ACER. Should I be worried?

Well, it depends on how extensively you use the things. If it's used regularly, but not extensively, it should be no problem. If the things runs the whole day - like it does with me and with Jinxer as well, I suppose, since I work with it, yes, then it IS a problem.

I currently STILL have a HP ze4521 I bought SIX years ago, end of 2003. It was my workhorse until last October. In 2006 I boght a (then) high-end acer, since the HP couldn't run modern games anymore which was necessary, since I had to be able to run HoMM 5. I used the Acer exclusively for gaming - within the 2 yeras warranty time I got a broken DISPLAY and a broken MAINBOARD.

Last October, after buying a new gaming machine, I pro-(de-)moted the acer to workhorse.
The fun lasted 3 months, then the graphic adapter overheated and not only burned itself out, but the slot as well, so that you couldn't simply switch the adapter anymore (which would have been possible), but had to get a new mainboard. And JUST from working and watching the odd youtube video.

Here is the machine and setup I am currently looking at....

HP Pavilion DV7T 17.3" NOTEBOOK PC (INTEL CORE 2 DUO P8700 2.53GHz
4GB RAM
500GB 7200rpm DUAL HDD
17.3" WXGA HIGH-DEFINITION 1600x900 LCD
Lightscribe SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW
1GB ATI Radeon HD4650
Windows 7...64bit

Total Price $775.00

Note the Ram is low.. but I plan on upgrading it to 8GB-ddr3 Ram I found a 2X4gb sticks for $275.  So makes this machine $1050 total, and has the Ram you suggested the 7200 rpm hardrive you suggested... The 17 in screen.. and the Intel 2.53 P8700 processor you suggeested.

Seems this would be everything I was looking for and only $50 above my preset budget.

True.. but again.. I dont own any Blueray disks.. and dont forsee me starting to buy them just because I would have a player on my computer. I have about 100 DVD's with all my kids movies etc..

Besides with euro conversion to US dollars Jokers build would cost me about $1500... so thats $450 difference.. I am sure I can buy a player for that

No, IF SONY US would offer the same machines than Sony EUROPE, that machine would cost about that price in Dollars: below 1200 $ in any case. The trouble is that Sony US isn't offering those.

While the rig isn't bad, Jinxer, I'd wait half a year. Note that the CURRENT 17'' machines with true 16:9 have a smaller screen than the old 16:10 machines.

GO AND LOOK AT A 17'' 16:9 RATIO SCREEN! It's not THAT big.

It seems that the 17'' format isn't that popular right now. It would be worth a thought to buy a cheaper 15'' or 16'' and go for an external 22'' monitor - the things come extremely cheap nowadays.

Moreover, seeing the specs you have... I mean, I don't know your financial situation, but I do not think it's worth spending 1000 bucks YET. I wouldn't do it.

In half a year wou'll get the 8 GB for the price of 4 AND an intel i5 520M plus Nvidia 330 for, well, 750 bucks, I guess. Plus a better display.

WAIT!

That's because diagonal size shouldn't be used as measurement, but area. A 16:9 with the same diagonal as 16:10 or heck, 4:3 (classical desktop monitors), has less area.

(a 1:1, or square, has the biggest area for its diagonal size... if you don't believe me, do the math yourself )

Death, I know that.

The thing to keep in mind, however is this. Older games don't run on 16:9 resolutions. For example, Disciples 2, which is a pretty good game, runs on 640x480 which is 4:3 ratio. If you run that on a 1600:900 screen, the screen will leave the sides black, since from  1600 pixels will only 1200 or 75% be used. So the 17.x'' will actually reduce to a 14'' there.

I'd add here: wait inside town! to avoid hit and run .

What have i told you, Jinxer? Instead of looking for cheapery and keep these guys busy with your questions, better follow the link i gave at the bottom of the first page and problem is solved. What would 5000 bucks mean to you? Simple math: 100 bucks a haircut once at 20 min with changing the towels with all, makes 300/h, that's 2400 on a regular day, with over time can reach 3000/day minus taxes and considering some cash fat tips , you can go home with 2500 bucks in your pocket at the end of the day. In only couple of days you can gather money for a strong machine, and play relaxed any game for next 2 years. Isn't that simple? Of course is not , if you refuse hundreds of bucks coming straighr to your pocket because you're writing on the forums .  pfff... it's not only heroes that you still have to learn

Have a nice day

Thanks all for your time and input... I have made up my mind.

I appreciate everyones effort, but this thread ended up going in the wrong direction.. I originally desired more facts and less personal opinions. And seems that everyones posts are more focused on there own personal opinions and tastes.

Keep in mind my current machine is working perfect for what I do with it.  My wifes computer is dying and we need another laptop to replace that one.. HOWEVER if we are gonna get a new laptop, then I WILL GET it and she can have my old one  SO for that reason alone I am getting anew one. So sure I want better features, but I do not need a $5000 machine.. and You have been the most help Joker, but keep in mind.. I realize that 6 months from now there will be a MUCH better options at a cheaper rate.. but that will ALWAYS apply to every 6 months.. if I wait 6 months.. then buy.. then 6 MONTHS after that there will be something better and cheaper.. and 6 months after that there will be something better and cheaper.   My goal here is to get better then I currently am...

2.0 GHZ    ---->  2.53 Ghz 20% Better
2GB Ram    ---->  8GB Ram 4X Better
160 HD     ---->  500 HD  4X Better
256 Video  ---->  1024 Video 4X Better
Vista-32Bit ---->  Windows7 -64Bit

SO this may not be the dream machine for most.. but it will be huge improvement for me. But again, I do appreciate everyones effort it helping me.

Thanks!

Hi, Jinxer
I have few question and after it can give you my suggestion.

1. How much money you are ready to spend for new laptop.
2. Do you plan to use him a lot on battery or most from time will be connect to electro.
3. For what you want to use your laptop(movies/new games and more)?
