me confused
you asking what we think is most popular (i.e. a good map, balanced etc) -or- are you asking what we think is most overplayed?

No, seriously, Battle for honor seems to me to be the most balanced from there. BfH and me vs you are in my opinion the best maps from JB artistic creation.
Desert war is too simple, it helps the plebe feeling strong in early game.
Battlemania is some paranomania from some dungeon lover.
Hourglass, well, I will not tell you what I think about, there are others topics here who caracterized it much better and polite than I could do myself.
The most interesting map from your list is your map, DoG. It has a creative design, too bad that, among many others map, it showed only one strategy to succed. We beat the hydras day 15 and we feelt strong. Then we beat the hydras day 10 and feel like Superman. Then day 7 etc. All this stuff to get a scroll of dim door and humiliate the opponent. No sense. But you could improve, many qualities were in this map(my opinion only)

I am the only one that vote so far :P
you make a poll and dont even vote urself?? you truly r a mad one...
I voted for DoG, I played it once recently cause it is soooo much fun to kill 175 hydras with 3 titans, 1 magi, 8 nagas, and berserk....Too bad no one is allowed to play the original map for toh anymore.
It was the very first assualt map
Sigh it is sad to see how the distrust of fellow toh players cant be trusted not to use the double spell trick...
That is why toh doesnt allow this map anymore right??

Best map? Come on!
personally I think all of those maps suck as they're just about getting artifacts and building up a huge army before battle. All of the maps are just pretenses. I got a better idea, why don't people just go out there and edit in all of the stuff they'd like and allow their opponent to do the same and then place the 2 main heroes on one little island and have a really huge half hour battle? Hey, it's a lot easier than messing around in the bottom half of an hourglass! LOL, it should have been called many hourglass, because it takes many many hours for you just to get to the middle and meet your opponent!
If I had to play one, I would play BFH because it's not as ridiculous as HG and there are no stinking angel guarded garrisons!

Showdown didnt even make the list??
I think the hourglass series is fun in the sense of "luck based" maps but I still love the showdown series as my favorite maps to play. Diamondhead is a great map when U get tired of all the art laden maps and maps that only have a linear strategy

Good point about DoG Moc and Sal, truly one of the most innovative maps ive seen. I hated it though, prolly coz I felt like I was in a Formula 1 Race, and not playing Heroes
But of the maps mentioned, Bfh is my favourite anyday, plenty of scout battles, breaking up chains etc. But telling that 4 out of 5 mentioned overplayed maps are closed

Random maps are second best...
Random maps are a close second, but blind maps are the best. Only trouble I've had with them is that half the time when I play them, my opponent just happens to get really lucky with there moves and end ups going directly to the best spots. Wonder why that could be ...

Ok, random is not on the list, they should be. They are the best IMO. ALthough geiger brought up another one of my Favorites, Blind Maps, unfortunately i can NEVER find anyone willing to play one.

Yeah but those weaknesses of random maps are the strengths of random maps. I get really bored of playing a set number of maps over and over. Seems like all anyone wants to play is the ones from the poll. Which I am bored to death of. As crappy as randoms are they aren't that boring, are they? Maybe I haven't played enough randoms yet. I miss the Campaign from heroes 2 to be honest. Now that was fun!
Just my thoughts.

I think the most overplayed map is this one called "Random". I see a lot of people playing it.
All kidding aside I think the best maps are as follows
For open I say BFH, Boomerang and Crimson(there is more to this map the just getting a bigger army day3 but noone but Frank seems to believe that :-( and therefor noone plays it.
For closed there is only one I will even play, HG,1,2 or 3 all fine with me. This map is total luck and a laugh riot at how easy the stats come but I still enjoy it quite a bit.
As for maps that I would not put in either category are seemingly a lost art of maps that are open but not for openness sake. People do not play these maps anymore and I really miss them.
Map's like The Nexus, Fire War Campaign, Beltway, 7 Lakes and many others in this style. I know I am an old fogey for mentioning these passe maps but there really can be more to a map then making both sides identical.
Both sides can be fair and different and making more than 2 playable colors can be cool. I remember playing beltway for 2 years in heroes2 and people still arguing for 2 years which of the 3 colors were better. I think that kind of balance without mirroring is a major accomplishment in mapmaking and makes the map infinitely replayable.
That is not a knock on the mirror maps that have become so popular but I wish there were more players willing to play these lost maps.
By the way the most overplayed map is West vs East. If it were even played one time it is overplayed. If anyone ask you to play it say "Sure, I'm red." and see if they still want to play it. It's an absolute pattern map and blue has no chance of red's hosting advantage if used properly.
This can be said of many maps but none moreso than that one.

Any ideas on why mirror maps are so popular? Is it because people want fairness? Or are map makers just too lazy to put in the effort to build more complex but balanced maps? My guess is that more people prefer fairness maps, even though they are incredibly boring.
Still, I think and hope that Homm4 will bring enough new things to the game to keep it interesting. I wouldn't mind seeing another expansion pack if it meant that the game would get some new fun stuff.

Good post Jiels
I think there are 2 reasons why mirror maps are so prevelent
1) It is SO hard to balance a map without mirroring it. You say "Sure I put this dragon cave here but what do I put there to set it off"
"Sure both players can race for this artifact and have a confrontation. But what does one player give up by racing that the other doesn't"
On and on and on. And a map like that requires so much extensive testing it is unreal.
I made a map in heroes2 called Avarice and we, Frank, Alkis, Salamandre, Prometheus and several others kept moving towns over 1 space here and move this tree out 1 space there, etc because it was nearly impossible to create fari access for 4 players to everything without anything mirroring the other sides. It took months of course.
I scrap maps all the time because I cannot find the way to balance them w/ mirroring but if I ever can pull it off again then I will be happy about it.
2) When a map is balanced in such a way it will spawn debates over fairness. I will use beltway as example.
People would say yellow has access to dragon cave.
Then others argued red had easy upward access to towns that were easy to protect and many artifacts.
Then people countered that purple had 4000 free gold to pick up on day3.
Then people said red would always win the race to bridge the gap in the beltway and get the 8000 gold.
Yellow could always beat purple to the lith and block it off.
On and on and on. For 2 years.
To me that is the mark of a good map when people can debate its points that long and not conclude a true best color.
Also it adds fun when some guy says "I want purple!!" and you laugh and think to yourself "Red is the best!" and then you learn why he wanted it and maybe next time you may pick it yourself.
There is nothing wrong w/mirror maps. Maybe we just don't have as many good map designers as we used to?
Or maybe we do and they are just placating what the people want.
After all why put months into a map if only Salamandre and I will play it. :-)
