How can you recommend a book you haven't finished reading?
Who knows? maybe the last 40 pages are total eye-rape!

If you're into Sci-fi and WH40k some of you (if Omega were still here more often I'd know for sure, since he's my fellow devoted servant of the God-Emperor) may know the Horus Heresy series. It takes place in the Warhammer 40 000 universe and revolves arround the fall of Horus Lupercal. While 4 Novels alone (the first 4) tell the story of Horuses downfall there are plenty of "sidestories" evolving at the same time. Calling them sidestories doesn't really do them justice but compared to the main galatic catastrophy that is Horus treachery they kinda are... Now the latest instalement of the Series is the one I'd like to present to you.
"A Thousand Sons" talks about the Legion of Magnus the Red (the primarch/genefather of the Thousand Sons) and how they came to end up incurring the wrath of the Emperor. I can't tell you too much since I'd be spoling things but I'd like to tell you that I found it a very enjoyable read wich is written really well so it's very immersive. I think I read the whole thing in two days^^.
The book might not be a good pick for you if you're a hardcore sci-fi fan (the book is sci-fi in the WH40k sense but apart from that I do believe that it may disappoint sci-fi fans, I'm not sure since I#m not much of a sci-fi fan apart from WH) since this book isn't all that actionpacked in the sense of lots of epic battles going on all over the place through the entire book. There are awesome battles but they're few. And I don't recommend it if you're totally new to the WH40k universe since you'd probably have some difficulties understanding it. But if you're a WH40k fan and you're looking to get some history on the Primarchs (Magnus the Red in this particular case) and some deeper insight in the Heresy I definetly recommend this to you.

Time to revive this thread.

Devil's Cape by Rob Rogers is a very entertaining book, especially for people who like superhero comics/movies.
What I like about this book is the fact that the author is able to summon up all kinds of well-known clichés of the genre and make them look fresh.
For example, the main villains involve a carnival troupe that becomes "changed" - a freak show to begin with, becoming a super freak show.
I can recommend that book for a lt of chuckling.

Freakonomics.
It is sometimes complicated and factual, but can be very interesting. As for Superfreakonomics the sequel, it is good, but probably not as good as the first.

I finally got around to reading 'Guns, Germs, and Steel' and I enjoyed it immensely. Reflecting back on it, I can't think of a single time where the author said something that I didn't agree with, which means I either have poor critical thinking skills, or he did a really good job, or both.

The Mistborn Series is an absolutely phenomenal fantasy trilogy by Brandon Sanderson; I can't recommend it enough to any fans of fantasy literature. It's got great characters, a really in-depth and decidedly unique magic system, and one hell of an interesting plot. They aren't too long either; it's a far more accessible series than, say, the Wheel of Time. If you like fantasy then, again, I can't recommend these enough.

Went to the library today. Thought I'd check out that trilogy SwampLord recommended. Started getting a little excited; "I'm in the mood for a good fantasy trilogy." I get into the ailses thinking "Firstborn', "fortuately' I remember, No, Swamp+mist. It's "Mistborn". Find Sanderson. They only have the 2nd and 3rd books. Had to order it in. Walked out with "The Fortess of Glass" by David Drake.

It's worth the wait, trust me. Great books.
Sanderson also just started a new 10-book fantasy epic of his own, in addition to finishing the Wheel of Time; I haven't read it yet so I can't comment but I've heard great things.
@ Azagal-May be a while back, but thought I'd let you know, I'm a huge 40k fan. I fell behind in the HH series a bit; I definitely need to catch up.

I'm sooo ready for some adventure. Turns out the book I settled for has a recommendation from Terry Goodkind and I thought I had heard that name before. Turns out, he is an author that Jir9 spoke of earlier in this thread. I did see a couple other's by Sanderson. One was named for a city? Atlantis is coming to mind. It sounded good. Might have been his first.
Anyway, thanks for the tip. I'll let you know when I get going on it.

This is mostly for JJ, who I know is a fan, but I just finished Stephen King's latest book Under the Dome, and it was fantastic. Definitely the best thing he's written in years. Like The Stand, which was also fantastic, the climax didn't quite live up to the build-up, and the Dome's secret I felt was a bit of a cop-out, but even with all that, I'd still heartily recommend it.

Just wanted to share that SwampLord brought a very good writer to my attention. I flew through this trilogy. (I intended to make this post long ago.) It was very well written not just a fine tale.
So, If you're looking for a winter fantasy-read <IOO> this is a good one. There's magic but it's like nothing we use in HoMM.
I just started his newest called; "The Way of Kings" another Trilogy that he's been stewing over for around 12 years.
Thanks again SwampLord for posting "Mistborn" here.

Yes,what an abominable series.
I don't have much new stuff to recommend (currently reading Hemmingway in between Russian classics). Well, I really like Chuck Palahniuk (I know, old stuff), his cynical style and the way his characters are all about self-destruction is something I find very fascinating, though it could be just me.

Some folks think it's great, but I didn't care for it either. If you didn't like the book then never see the movie. Movies are seldom thought as good as the books.

If its books I can recommend a trylogy by Brent Weeks I just finished.
Its called "The night Angel" trylogy. i got the first book on xmas in 2009, the second in mid 2010 and the final one was a present on this xmas. I was always attracted by books about assassins, but this one is just a masterpiece IMO. One of very few stories(not just in books but overall) that have satisfied me with the ending.
Here's the synopsis of the first book
Quote: The perfect killer has no friends. Only targets.
For Durzo Blint, assassination is an art. And he is the city’s most accomplished artist, his talents required from alleyway to courtly boudoir.
For Azoth, survival is precarious. Something you never take for granted. As a guild rat, he’s grown up in the slums, and learned the hard way to judge people quickly — and to take risks. Risks like apprenticing himself to Durzo Blint.
But to be accepted, Azoth must turn his back on his old life and embrace a new identity and name. As Kylar Stern, he must learn to navigate the assassins’ world of dangerous politics and strange magics — and cultivate a flair for death.
if anyone is interested Here is a link.
I think I'm gonna start reading it again soon :D
