The game of the year IMO should do something that contributes to the gaming industry. Something that is revolutionary.

@emilsn: It's good, but it's not THAT good. I agree with mamgaeater.
I can't remember if SCI got Game of the Year, but it would've deserved it. It set the bar for most RTS for the better part of the decade after it came out. Likewise, Diablo I deserved GotY and Diablo II is a toss-up (there are things I enjoy more in DII, but the atmosphere of the first game is awesome).
Also, just as a note to everyone reading this discussion that keeps noticing my Blizzard bashing:
SC II is not a bad game. The truth is that:
- It was horribly overhyped (release date delays didn't help there at all)
- It was horribly overrated (coined as THE RTS of this current decade)
- Blizzard's current DRM scheme is pretty spartan, although less so than Ubisoft's.
- It feels like Activision is the puppet master in this scheme...
With that said:
- I enjoy the counter system, although time will tell whether the pros will regress to mass unit spam micro instead of playing by the system.
- I love the campaign. Plot's not much to write home about, but it has some neat twists and, like I said before, it's incredibly immersive.
- There are less useless units. Marines back in SC1 were nearly useless if the game lasted more than 15-20 minutes, even with Medic backup. In SC2, especially with Combat Shields, they can take a beating.
So essentially, my gripe is not that it's a bad game, it's that it's a bad sequel and not a GREAT game (only good).

Played the campaign now, quite challenging on brutal though some maps were really easy compared to others, Media Blitz was super easy compared to the one with the laser drill(forgot the name) which was pretty tough.
I'm having trouble with All-in because I was an idiot and didn't buy Shaped Blast.... Worst... Decision.... EVER.... my tanks keep blasting my own bunkers....
Overall I really REALLY enjoyed the campaign, looking forward to Heart of the Swarm already!

Campaign was epic - Really love it, allthough I am fearing for the story that it will become too complicated - to many weird twists, to many "THE GODS ARE PUNISHING US" , to much of all that ruined Warcraft for me.
BUT STILL ROCKS MY WORLD!!
Oh and I started playing online really makes the game last way more, so awesome, it is so fast getting matches, really good and well the game speed is fast and gotta keep up, or you will suffer
Love it, still the best game of year I haven't played a better game for many years, (only have a computer, so dont talk about PS3 or XBox games )

I enjoyed the campaign until nearly the very end. That final sequence, which I won't elaborate on to prevent SPOILERS...was just random.
Did they retcon 90% of the established franchise plot? *facepalm*
Like it has been said around the internet though, it's a cheap and easy way to justify that <censored for spoilers>'s powers are limited come the next expansion.
Also, show of hands if you actually believe that the shot from <censored>'s revolver finished off <censored>.
Because, I think we'll be seeing more of that character...if only because said character has a heck of a fanbase.
(Feel free to PM me for clarity if the censoreds are throwing you off.)
@emilsn: What mamga said (terrible hardware lag). I'd spend 90% of the game lagging if I tried to play online. I need to get a stronger computer first (probably the video card; integrated video cards stink).
Also, I can't play worth squat against other humans because I feel pressured. Some people thrive under that pressure, I don't.
But, I'm happy you're enjoying the online play.
What's your favorite race?

Well, Raynor didn't finish the job, and it's 101% likely that she'll retain certain control over the Swarm. (Otherwise, what's Blizzard going to do with the next expansion pack?)

maybe spoilers
because of what happened at the end of sc2, there will (atleast for a while) be gap in who controls the swarm
this will be an excellent opportunity for the evul guyz to take over the swarm for themselves
perhaps a certain dr. narud or should I say duran attempt to take control over the swarm now that kerrigan probably has been weakened

Quote: this will be an excellent opportunity for the evul guyz to take over the swarm for themselves
This is probably what will happen. Not completely of course, but I assume she'll have like 5% to 10% of the Swarm (if that) while the bad guys have the rest. She'll probably get help from her love interest and/or Zeratul to get more of the Swarm back, and once she has enough...
That's when things should get interesting.
I'm a Zerg fan myself, so I can't wait to see what'll happen.

spoiler-
I assumed that was the point also. The Hybrid combined with the Swarm on top pretty much annihilate the Terran and Protoss in the prophetic vision. Now with Kerrigan, they can control some or all of the swarm and concentrate on the Hybrid as much as possible.
I'm curious to see how the Terran are involved with it, since in the bonus mission at the end of Brood War, there were developing hybrid in tanks being guarded by the Terran.
