what's on the menu
I got into a conversation with a bunch of friends the other day, and randomly, My friend josh said
"You know what... I would really like to try swan."
my other friend, Michelle, piped up.
"Josh, you can't do that, Swans are protected under the queen, or something. it's treason."
Josh pressed
"No, I'm just wondering what it tastes like."
Abdul retorted.
"but you've got to have some animals that you don't eat, josh, I mean, where does it end, cannibalism?"
Josh looked at him.
"well?"
"What?"
"well, what do we determine is not on the menu?"
and this got me thinking. when does the human moral code stop when it come to our dietary requirments, and how much is that moral code flexible when it comes to one of our basic nessecities.
so, I've prepared a little quiz, as well as some discussion points. the quiz is simple, the foods are numbered, the conditions are lettered, and you simply put the condition next to the number according to when you would consider it best to eat the food. most of these are hypothetical, so feel free to discuss the various points at you're leisure.
conditions:
a) no conditions/already eat it
b) if there was nothing else.
c) prepared by someone else.
d) prepared by myself.
e) already dead.
f) if it was bred with no anthromorphic characteristics.
g) killed it myself.
h) knew it had a good life.
i) I was at the point of starvation.
j) peer pressure.
k) it's in my culture to do so.
l) It was cooked. (to what degree, please specify)
m) it was raw.
n) it was given to me.
o) if I had no idea what it was.
p) Will not eat it at all under any circumstances!

Eat everything, nothing raw.
I quess maggots could be good if done right and from right species. It just seems kinda disgusting.
Pet's only after they're dead and nothing else.
Human if only way of surviving.

I am a vegetarian. I would eat no meat unless I would starve to death otherwise. I would not eat a human being under any circumstances. I do not view eating meat as morally wrong however.

I'm thinking true inner moral codes come into play when it's die or eat. Otherwise it's just a matter what's convenient.
Most people's morals are life over death. Though I'm still not sure if I'd be able to eat another human even in life or death case. You can never know unless you really end up in such a situation. I'm pretty sure I could not eat my direct relatives, cousins and friends maybe.

I'm a carnivore by preference, so I would consider eating anything you've listed and just about every animal you've not. To me, an all meat diet sounds like absolute bliss. I've no objections to raw meat, unless I know it has a high likelyhood of carrying some disease or bacteria. I have hard time understanding why some people would eat cows and pigs but not rabbits or ducks. I've once heard that the fluffier/cudlier the animal the less likely people are to eat them. However the same is also true for animals in common phobias.
Nor have I any objections about eating humans and would like to know what human tastes like. I know it's illegal and considered immoral. But if we were to have to survive in an awefull war or some post-apocalyptic distopia, I'd probably be the first to suggest to eat the fallen. But let us hope it never comes to that

I have doubts about eating human. It's supposedly not a very good idea health wise. I hear the same thing goes for apes and monkeys as well.
I'd better do some research on the matter and get back to you.
Also: 17) "you're pets" (you are pets) is kind of an odd statement and I have no idea about how to eat such a clause.

I have no moral qualms with eating any of the above, provided that the human was not killed against their will. However, I have doubts as to whether some of these would be healthy, taste good, or just too disgusting to try.

Meat, or anything part of anyones body, is not something alive when it's going to be eaten. There's nothing morally wrong in eating the meat, there's something morally wrong in killing what becomes the meat. Could we merely produce meat, in stead of from a complexity of meat (i.e. something alive) of which we remove meat, then from molecules of what meat is made of, so nothing had to die in the process, I'm convinced there'd be no problem at all.
The typical "they only get killed, because you eat it" is not a valid excuse. There's no valid excuse for killing, profit or otherwise, and buying food is not supporting killing, as much as printing images of mohammed is not supporting terrorist acts.
(((after all, it's all a matter of lust vs. wants. In the matter of killing -> selling -> profit -> able to get what want or lusts, is pretty much the same as humiliation (felling activated) -> killing, both are driven by either something we want to achieve or how we feel about something and it's the means that's wrong, the excuses does not matter. Like we should not stop all children from wearing orange coates, because someone takes offense to a child wearing orange)))
The only thing that does support killing is actually doing actions towards making killing more likely to happen, such as selling weapons, etc.
So with that said, I don't see anything wrong in eating meat, I see something very wrong in the way meat is produced, and they can come up with any excuse, after all it's just a claim of what drives someone and profit only seems obvious because that's how society is constructed, we all know there can be other action gradients, or excuses if you want and they can be absurd as the colour orange.
Now with that said, I'd only eat something that in return produces something I want for my body, in short it has to have nutrisions, etc. and it of course has to be eatable.

2) sheep - e
3) cow - e
4) pig - e
5) swan - e
6) crocodile - e
7) mouse - e
8) cat - e
9) dog - e
10) sprouts - e
11) grub - e
12) butterfly - e
13) tortoise - e
14) shark - e
15) gorilla - e
16) tiger - e
17) your pets - e
18) human - e
19) part of your own body - e...
Though, I can imagine a lot of those on the list does not really have any nutrisions in them, or is not really eatable, which would make that I'd not eat them, and I'd never kill anything.
About part of ones own body, again assuming it has nutrisions and is eatable, it also, like for all other instances, requires it to really be "death" that is it's not life anymore (you can't just reattach it to yourself, it's no longer a part of your body, or a living thing, just some meat).

A for 1-16. E for 17, though I don't see why I would fry up my dead cat. I for 18-19.
I haven't had all of those, but there aren't any legitimate dishes yet that I dislike so I'm not apprehensive about the taste. Even willing cannibalism is a dangerous road so I wouldn't participate in that, though I imagine human meat isn't far different from pork.
Hunting top-tier predators to a high degree is a bad practice since they can't sustain themselves in the way herd animals and such can, though few people regularly eat that kind of meat anyway so I don't see an occasional dish of it being a problem.

It's a bit problematic that different attributes (a, b, c, etc.) does not mutually exclude one another, so several can be true and some partly true and some might not cover what really is required.

Thus far I've figured that it's not that smart to eat human because you'll contract the diseases the human might have had easier since the diseases that a human has have adapted to ailing people. Same goes for apes. We're too similiar.
So I guess that if you eat a person who had HIV, you'll get it too.
I guess the best advice there is to give is: Don't eat people from the hospital.
