Xerox's Book Thread
You have heard a lot of this and now I am gonna start to seriously work on it. Hardcore. I have just finished the backstory of the japanese/east asian-inspired Wood elves as the prologue chapter is set in their capital city of Shiromar, Diralis.
I made this thread because I've been talking a lot about this and its the project of my life so far. While I of course have all the story in my head already (though it expands and changes every day), I am going to need some advice etc. I have a ton of debates in my head and the most major one is about the naming of cities and such (should I name all cities and lands translated to swedish/english, in their own language or mix it?) but I will touch that later on.
I am going to post the prologue chapter later (early version obviously). Translated to english of course though I might also post the original swedish one aswell.
I would also like to already thank HC. I had some great inspiration from here. One of the main races, the Snow elves (I promise you, there are only two kinds of elves who are barely related and are completly different) were inspired from a Faction Contest which I participated in and I got a perfect name for my fantasy planet (Sceracion) from one of my favorite users - the always so clever and intelligent Cepheus.
edit: Oh, and if you are interested in my early take on the Wood elves, than I wrote very briefly about them on my wiki to build up some backstory about them.
It can be found here: http://sceracion.wikia.com/wiki/Wood_Elf

Send an english manuscript to an english publisher? If it's good, they'll buy it.
Anyway, xerox, names aren't important. Try to convey a fascinating story. World comes second.
EDIT: @DF wait, the witcher comes from a publisher in your country, right? try sending a manuscript to that publisher!

Dagoth has a point. It would be good for storytelling to shape the world in a way that best accomodates the story. After all, isn't the point of fantastic elements to aid the storytelling?
Fantasy worlds for the sake of fantasy worlds are better suited for roleplaying campaigns in games such as D&D.
Best of luck Xerox dude.
Edit: What does it mean when you say in the wood elf page of your wiki:Quote: The Wood elves use a very complex language made out of signs.
Do you mean that they communicate mainly by different gestures or do you mean that they construct signposts in order to exchange ideas? Or do you refer to writing by logograms?
It would definitely also help in getting some kind of an idea of what the language is like if there were some concepts from linguistic typology.

Xerox...
I think you should just drop the orcs altogether...
The elves too...
Seriously, fantasy writers need to stop paying homage to Tolkien someday
EDIT: and don't be a hack and create creatures that are basically orcs but are called "Urgals" or "Sranc" or something.
Don't be like Paolini.
EDIT2: You know why I hesitate buying fantasy novels? I've had some really crap ones. Don't you dare making a crap one!

Been writing on my own little fantasy story for a while actually.
Developing the story in my head all the time, the world needs some work though but it should develop nicely as the story goes on.
A teacher of mine who read some of it (started writing as a school project actually) told me he thought it was quite similar to the Mistborn series. I don't really like it when people read my unfinished work though.

I can't write that good in english... Books need a lot of style which is unfortunately out of my reach when it comes to secondary languages...

Yes, Witcher has been wrote by a Pole. However, it took almost 20 years and a successful game to make those stories interesting to publishers around the world. Perhaps it's because the language used in it was particularly hard to translate and loses a lot of meaning when read in non-Polish language.

Ah, but you still have domestic publishers of fantasy, which is something I don't have. Say, if I were to write a fantasy manuscript, I'd probably end up sending something to Luitingh or Orbit (english publishers), because I could only get away with post-modernist books or crime novels or incredibly unique ones (which probably are post-modenrist in a way) in Belgium.

Polish inner-marked is swarmed by fantasy books though. To a point where you really need to be awesome to get released, I fear
I'm going to try anyways, however Xerox once wrote that he found a publisher with ease. Idk whether he was trolling back then or not, but if so, I wish it was so easy here
