Quote: I know the architectures of the factions are being re-invented but some of the Academy units are too closely related to the desert/Middle-Eastern style to move onto a new terrain for them.
Really? Cause as far as I can rememeber all of Academy's units except Rakshasa were also in H3's SNOWY* Tower.
*The word "snowy" is used as a description of the terrain, not as my opinion of the faction.
Yes they were, but it never actually felt an actual faction, nor relating to its terrain. It was also a different game-universe.
It wouldn't even make sense if it was something like "they started out in the plains but the plains died and it became a desert" because the Ashan storyline states they created the Seven Cities in the deserts, so inbetween that and H5, they moved out for a bit?

What I really want to know has nothing to do with specific homm6 questions. I'll find them out in the near future anyway through official announcements.
What I want to know is lore related like:
1) are there really only 10 factions in the Ashan universe as stated?
2) 8 are already in homm 5 so only 2 more would remain, which in my opinion would be a faction worshiping Shalassa (nagas) and one Sylath/Ylath (Free Cities)
3) If the above is correct does ubi intend somewhere in the future to introduce neutral subfactions like dragonknights, pirate elves, desert orcs etc. ?

I would not consider those as a big enough force to warrant a faction but I would very much like to see a dragon knight one. I do not know enough to confirm or deny.

Not necessarily subfactions, but dragon knights, blind brothers and the likes could easily be neutral creatures at some point or another.

if u are refering to point 3 I called it a neutral subfaction especially because they aren't big enough to form a faction but they would appear storywise like e.g. - during a haven campaign, when the knights are fighting a demon invasion they will get help from the dragon knights in the form of a big neutral building near your castle which would give u access to let's say 3 types of dk units (tier4,5,7); this could also work with heavily defended neutral buildings hiring units on multiplayer maps.
How about point 2? Plainly put, over the last years I made a lot of Sylath faction proposals, and ever since I've seen the Stonehelm Keep on the Ashan map I've been thinking about it. I do not want to know if this will be in homm6. What I want to know is if Ubi has ever had a faction like these in plan and if it is one of the ten proclaimed to be all the factions in the Ashan universe cause if not it would make me very sad.

Dragons not, but dragon-related creatures would be welcome.
Pseudodragons, dragonnes, dracotaurs, etc.

I may be stating something that had been recitfied, but I believe that the previous Ubisoft Community Manager, the one before Xhane whose (pseudo)name I cannot recall, had stated that the Free Cities of the East are a very splintered group of people. They have as much animosity between themselves as they have with the major factions. They value their independance and freedom more than anything else and are to splintered to become a unified faction.
In other words, he tried to state that the Free Cities would not become a playable faction.
Also, congratz Elvin with becoming an insider. If I may say anything, don't risk yourself with breaching any NDA. We may nag and whine, but think of yourself first of all.

That's why I called it a Sylath faction and not the Free Cities.

How about post Dinosaurs?
A reptilian race that survived extinction and was still, somewhat, intelligent enough, to have gathered around as to create a settlement setting within the swamps of Ashan
Who knows how far back 400 years might take us A mere 250 to 300 years after, total wipe-out of all reptilian species and, only a select few types of Dragons found their way to forever after survival amongst the newest, darkest, humanoid-like civilizations
As for the 5th unknown faction: Humans who perfected the art of wizardry and, became the new race of the Wizards. That, in turn, have not mastered the art of making artificial units, just yet. Could be very possible that they are, still, dwelling in very high towers in the forestal plains of Ashan and, indirectly enslave the Dwarves via their magical inner abilities. Invites all kinds of remnant and ancient civilizations to join them as to call the Wizards city, their new, sovereign kingdom.
How's that for a totally randomized 5th town As for me? Totally

That's where you stated Free Cities.
But I doubt it. Unless there is a human society that is undiscovered as of yet. If Ubisoft does not whish to contradict it's own timeline, the all humans worshiping Sylath, the Dragongod of Air, are living in the Free Cities.
As evidence for this read the offical timeline, of which we keep a copy on our beloved site. Read these two entries in particular:
3 YSD. Birth of the Falcon Empire Falcon the Great unifies the human kingdoms (founding the empire that will one day become the Haven faction). A prophecy tells that the Falcon line shall endure as long as the world does.
48 YSD. The Falcon Empire Becomes the 'Holy Falcon Empire' Founding of the Free Cities of the East Emperor Brian Falcon gives absolute power to the Church of the Dragon of Light. The Human kingdom is renamed "Holy Falcon Empire". Dissent grows among many citizens who resent being forced to abandon their faith in Sylath. Many will leave the Empire's territory to found the Free Cities of the East.

I don't think he was talking about 10 factions in Ashan but 10 factions through the whole Heroes series :
1. Knight (H1/H2) / Haven (H3/H4/H5)
2. Sorceress (H1/H2) / Rampart (H3) / Preserve (H4) / Sylvan (H5)
3. Warlock (H1/H2) / Dungeon (H3/H4/H5)
4. Barbarian (H1/H2) / Stronghold (H3/H4/H5)
5. Mage (H2) / Tower (H3) / Academy (H4/H5)
6. Necromancer (H2) / Necropolis (H3/H4/H5)
7. Hades (H3) / Necropolis (H4) / Inferno (H4/H5)
8. Fortress (H3)
9. Conflux (H3)
10. Fortress (H5)

Does that means we have two new factions which will be in H6??? As far as I know there are 8 factions in H5. That leaves us with two new factions. Right?

I totally disagree with alternative upgrades. It would be a lot better to work on more factions than work on alternative upgrades.
Get something like 10 factions would be really awesome.

I wonder who #10 is then, because there were 8 in H5:TotE, plus Naga.

No, I don't think so. I think the reference was for "a total of 10 factions", which are the 8 from H5, plus two that didn't make an apearance in that game, which would be the Naga, which are specifically mentioned in the lore, and then one more, which it is not quite clear what would be (Faceless? Sylath worshippers / free cities? Dragon Knights? Something we don't know about at all?).
Of these 10 factions, apparantly 5 will turn up in H6 vanilla.

I think we need to be a bit realistic on this subject. Developing a new faction is a lot of work - not only do they need to make units, they also need to make heroes, class skills, skill trees, spells, city designs, buildings, etc. etc., and the whole thing has to be balanced against other factions.
I understand that they cut alternative upgrades in vanilla version, because they need to maximize the number of factions to include. On the other hand, I personally don't believe it's realistic that we'll see more than 3 factions through the expansion packs (*maybe* 4, but I see that as extremely unlikely). That would end up with 8 factions as in Heroes 5.
On the other hand, once the vanilla version is released, working on alternatives seems like a viable option, because that will not require them to make new buildings etc., but will flesh out existing factions and add playability.

If you talk about the Gamestar preview, he clearly wrote 5 out of 10 factions from the M&M universe and not only from Ashan
