Crashing/vista compatability

I pretty much put up with this problem because the game autosaves and it only wastes a few seconds when it crashes, however, earlier today I had just won a battle, and just as I was going to end my turn, it crashed; after trying the fight about 8 more times, I could not manage to beat it again.

Is there any way to change the settings so it will function better in windows Vista, or will I just have to deal with it? I can't seem to find any video options settings menu anywhere.

Also, I'd prefer to play this game in windowed mode but can't figure that out either; the trick to put -w at the end of the target in a shortcut doesn't seem to work on this game, and since i can't find the video settings, I can't figure out if it is possible.

Many games have a lot of problems with Vista, let alone very old ones.
