Namtaru and Boss mechanic discussion.
Quoting Nelgrith
Quote: Many screenies featuring the Mother Namtaru boss and the subterrans.
Quote:
More infos about the fight against Mother Namtaru - still from French PC Games
Mother Namtaru is the incarnation of Asha and controls Death, Time and Space (hence the 3 faces). She's a 4x4 square boss and is followed by hordes of specters that will attack the player's army. These specters are corrupted (plagued ?) by her aura
Each turn, she'll shoot 3 rays of Primordial Magic in 3 directions. She can also jump from one side of the battlefield to the other
She has 2 offensive abilities and 2 defensive ones :
- Her retaliations are poisoned and she has unlimited retaliations
- She can cast a "temporal" web on the battlefield that will block any unit caught in its area (3x3 squares)
- She has an Invulnerability Shield that absorbs 80% of the damage
- She can eat her specter minions to heal up when her health reaches a critical level
When the player will fight her, he will have an artifact that will cancel the Shield for 1 turn every 3 turns.
Looks like boss battles will provide us with interesting and unique mechanics we will have to adapt to.
Gameplay radically different from a regular encounter.
If they approach all their bosses with roughly this level of design I will be extremely pleased.
Some food for thought:
Too gimmicy? nice change of pace?
Climactic encounter stuff? Scaling worries?
Do you want to be able to use a boss once or twice in scenarios or custom maps?
Do you have a good idea for a boss?

At least I can relax a bit now knowing that the final battle with the final boss won't be as lame as HV. Well, we don't know that yet but seriously I can't imagine them putting regular battle(s) as the final battle when they have these boss mechanic now.
Edit:
More stuff relating to boss from Nelgirith
Quote:
- The water serpent from the trailer will be 2x8 square sized
- There will be about 2 boss fights per campaign

The boss fights so far seem to be completely stolen from King's Bounty (and while on topic - the special tiles on the battle map - from Disciples III). I hope there will be something different, but the game looks more and more like King's Bounty half-clone with a multi-player option...
Not to be entirely negative - the model looks good.

If you're gonne steal crap, best steal quality crap, overall King's Bounty has quite a lot of quality crap.
But hey, it's like Heroes of Might and Magic which in turn is like the original King's Bounty so really these games seem to have a tradition of nicking from each other.
Mind you King's Bounty boss fights weren't all that memorable for me.
Bosses didn't really do a lot of crazy stuff.
It was the rare castle sieges that I found interesting in that game.
Tended to be very nasty big battles against rather unfair odds, presuming you didn't try to 100% clean EVERYTHING before moving on.

First, about the mentioned boss' abilities which are lsited as 2 off and 2 def abilities: I think they are all defensive!
...poisonous retaliation - retaliation => defensive
...web catching units - prevents them from attacking you, so I see this that as also defensive, at least both defensive and offensive
...Shield and Heal abilities: Clearly defensive.
Btu that's my opinion, only.
I see this boss thing in general makes many nice options. Yet it enforces even more the character of H6 to be more Roleplay-like and that I dislike, since HoMM is mainly a strategy game for me!
I would liek to be able to create bosses, possibly froma data bank AND from existing champion units and heroes (for example creating an ancient dragon twice the size as boss, with VERY strong stats and some strong abilities). Using them multiple time sin a scenario...do you mean different bosses or one? I would appreciate both, if bosses had to be in...
Good boss ideas...I think it depends quite much on the storyline...an archdemon or such could be a nice boss. Or a boss in the kind of "kill a protected target" - a target, possibly shielded from ranged attack and spells, surrounded by fat guards which you have to eliminate in order to kill the target. A round-timer would enahnce suspence here. Like in WC3 when you summon archimond, but reversed - instead of surviving long enough for something to happen, finishing the thing off quick enough before that happens.

Those screen shots have me excited again. For a while it seemed like they were changing a lot of things that I liked...
But I like this change. yes, it makes it seem more like an RPG, with a big boss you have to fight in order to proceed. But I like RPGs, so that part doesn't bother me.

If all bosses are going to be/look like this im happy. Dragons have the potential to be awesome now.
This boss does seem very defence oriented, gonna be a big pain to kill. Imagine an attacking boss, wipes out half your army before you get a hit

Ok if I am in the wrong place? I tried.
Can someone explain how a Boss is used in a game? I've never see the concept. Yes, Ive been under a rock and still am but I got this wire ran under it now.

The same as any other creature but bigger and with loads more hp and damage and abilities and they are always (presumably) a stack of 1.
Under normal circumstances we will only be fighting them, not controlling them.
A big scary monster, that can take on an entire army by itself.

Is it known if they will vary? I'm assuming one might know magic and cast it and also have a death cloud around it, for defense. While another may weld a very large sword and hit 2-3 stacks at a time, is that the way they might work?
Are they are incuded in the turn iniative system, like the Hero? So, in the battlefield, one Boss may be able to strike more often than the other?

They already spoiled one, do you want to know the whole game before it's released? Some mystery people!

We don't know yet, unfortunately. I'm quite sure the bosses will vary from one to another though. Basically, it's just the same as boss from rpg games. Don't worry too much about this, we probably won't encounter boss outside campaign in normal circumstance anyway.

As far as we know, nobody outside of NDA has fought her, and we're not even sure if anybody within the NDA has actually fought her other then the Developers them selves, we have very limited knowledge, and whilst I like to soak up some, I'd also like the game to hold a few surprises when I play through it.
I mean it's important to know what game you're buying, but that has got to be balanced versus the impact some good few surprises will bring.
I think Bosses, are the perfect content to leave almost completely unexplored, we can experience those when we buy the game.

<ROTFLOL> I hadn't enen thought about that aspect. I was just wanting to understand how to use the dang thing.
Yeah, can you tell me how to use it before it is released
@myheroes and MrDragon
Thanks for the comments. Needless to say I was thinking only about the "concept of a Boss" not about H6 perse.

Even then, I'm surprised you've never even heard the concept of boss. First point: You can't recruit boss therefore you can't use them except maybe if someone release a mod or something. Second: Boss are there for your extra challenge (stronger and sometimes requires special way to defeat) and often are related to the story. Third: Boss usually consist of one single entity (although multiple entity/parts/"can split up" are not unheard of), can followed by his/her/it henchmen/army/etc. Fourth: The final battle of a game containing boss usually are against an uber-powered-boss, take it as the hardest challenge of the game if you want (although stronger secret bosses are not unheard of).
This is only a guideline not an absolute rule.
