I agree. For me the HOMM4 Bone Dragon has the best design.

Completely agreed. HoMM II has by far the best creature designs.
H3 always looked kinda "dirty" to me.
And if we talk about adventure map, nothing can beat H4, it was just beautiful.

The bone dragon from H4 looks cool no doubt, but not the behemoth and DEFINITELY not the cerberus.
Bone Dragon
Behemoth of H3 (left) and H4 (right):
H4's behemoth looks like a shaved grey monkey. Nowhere nearly as terrifying as the one in H3.
Cerberus of H3 (left) and H4 (right):
"Guardians of the underworld" in H3 are "upgraded" to "Malnourished fire puppies" in H4.

I really like H3 ones. The style is nice and not one game after that has had more detailed creatures.
Even though 4 had some good ones, loved the vampire, most were just horrible.
But H2 takes the pot. Have you ever seen a phoenix that beautiful anywhere? Just stunning.
H5 wasn't bad but disliked style.
H1 looks a little TOO childish. God damn the dwarves, the DWARVES!
And purple dragons...

I think it's quite obviously that artwork really GOT WORSE. Jugging by the poll I can say that Heroes was getting better from the first part to the third (the second was also really good) where it had it's peak. And then it went far down with the fourth part and the fifth was no better.

You liked homm4 crappy, failed pokemon more than homm5 warcraft style?
While I agree with the "pokemon" and "wow" part I cant agree with your response, really. Its thats persons opinion, not yours. Let it be. I find the HOMM 1 cartoonish style awful, yet charming compared to HOMM2 but I wont force it down anyones throat not agreeing with me

I cannot even believe we are talking about the same game.
I think HOMM5's artwork was very nice really. And cannot understand how some people call it "cartoonish" (as if all the cartoons look the same by the way) Wraith, Lich, Assasin, Brisk Riders, Witches, Pit lord, Nightmares, Titan, Rhakshasa, Thanes, Wyerns, Angels, Paladin... Awesome works!

I must say that even though I obviously have my favourites, none of the HOMMs' designs were THAT bad for me; all of them had positive and negative aspects. I will rate each one out of 10. And my justifications are really abbreviated and general-I have a lot more to say about them
HOMM1: a bit cartoonish and some animations weren't so good, but come on, it was released way back in 1995(I wasn't even 1 year old then ) by that I'm saying that criticising a game's graphics that's about most of our ages is a bit unfair. Besides it was very climatic and that was the game that began the EPIC fantasy series we enjoy today
SCORE: 6
HOMM2: same as H1, but few beneficial changes were made, including making the units smaller on the battle screen (though the models actually look a bit less detailed). Each town screen was now even more unique and distinguishable from others, spells were improved etc. Lastly, some units IMO didn't have a better incarnation since then (e.g. Bone Dragon, though it goes on par with the H4 one, Vampire, but the H4 model is also good, arguably the Phoenix, and even the Wolf) of course this is only my opinion.
SCORE: 7
H3: this was when the artwork became a lot more mature and realistic(of course more graphically advanced, too), while still having a fantasy charm. It still used the H1 and H2 "formula" for the setout of maps, battles, towns etc. (but of course more in depth and greatly improved). Personally, every single unit in the game had my approval appearance-wise (while I may dislike some for other reasons, but it's the case for all HOMMs). Every town's architecture and overall theme/climate was very unique and suitable. Off-topic, but PLEASE BRING H3 FORTRESS BACK AND MANY CREATURES FROM OTHER FACTIONS LIKE MEDUSAS, FAERIE DRAGONS, EVIL EYES, AND MANY MORE!
SCORE: 9
H4: it is undoubtedly different from previous games, and that's one of the reasons many people dislike/ have distance to it. One of the worst things for me were the towns themselves: each of them looked EXACTLY the same with no distinctive architecture, in other words, in all factions the Fort, Capitol, Level 1, 2, 3, 4 creature dwellings, Mage Guilds WERE EXACTLY IN THE SAME PLACES which I found really repelling. Next thing is Battlefields; apart from looking quite plain and simple, there were sooo many obstacles that I had trouble moving my army about which was extremely frustrating. Also the scaling was incorrect as most of the trees were smaller that the units . On the other hand, whilst many of you describe the creature designs as awful, I agree that some were poor, but many of them were really high standard IMO(e.g. the Bone Dragon, Faerie Dragon, Titan, Genie, Gold Golem, Unicorn, the purple Thunderbird etc.) Additionally I found some of the special effects(like the stream of light falling on Angels and Crusaders, spell casting animations for units e.g. Mage, Genie, Faerie Dragon, spell animations, dying animations, movement animations e.g. Vampire, Thinderbird, Nightmare, Sea Monster etc.) visually beautiful. As for the game graphics themselves, I also feel like the game was rushed, especially looking at how low-resolution the models were, which was really a pity.
SCORE: 7
H5: OK, IMHO possibly the ONLY thing that H5 and WOW/Warcraft 3 have in common, is that they are 3d (which, come on, is like basically any game made these days?!). While I do agree with common views about some units looking too "cartoonish and childish" (e.g. Imps, Demons, Zombies, Peasants(though all Human units looked "fat" with inappriopriately puffy silhouettes), Gargoyles, Genies, Unicorns, Griffins etc.) and some simply being bad designs (e.g. Vampire, Bone Dragon being even worse than the H3 one, Lich, enslaved Minotaurs, Devils, weird-faced Manticores etc.) It has to be admitted, though, that there were almost PERFECTLY DESIGNED creatures that kinda compensate for that: Rakshasa Raja, Archangel, Sprite, Nightmare, Pit Lord, Titan(though IMO the H4 one was the best), Rune Priest, Foul Vywern, Cyclops etc. So, to conclude, H5 may have failed at several things, but it was the FIRST ATTEMPT of a 3d HOMM, which wasn't THAT BAD; moreover, as we can see from the H6 units, the developers have learned from their mistakes, and that's the most important
SCORE: 7

I absolutely agree. I wonder if mixing the H4 world and town view with H2 battle view would work. That'd be DELICIOUS!

If you look at units such as the Peasant, Genie, Zombie, and even Lich, they're very weirdly proportioned; that's where the charges of cartoonishness stem from, in my opinion. It's the fact that Heroes V takes a very Warcraft-y approach in regards to the color palette, weapon sizes, armor designs, and effects; the proportions and designs of HV are often not realistic.
That's not to say that they're bad, just that they're not realistic, and that's where the charges of cartoonishness come from, I think. Even HII, which had a very "cartoony" color palette, had creatures that were generally logically proportioned with realistic armor and weapons; HV has creatures with weird proportions and exaggerated designs. A lot of creatures feature overexaggerated weapons or armor in a style very reminiscent of that of Warcraft. Again, that's not to say that it's bad, just that it's different from the style utilized throughout most of the series, and that's where the complaints come from.

It took me a close look and 2 years(after I first bought Heroes III) to understand that the creatures were 2D.I always thought they were 3D.By the way,for me Heroes 3 has the most advanced graphics of all the games produced until 2010,both 2D and 3D.It is simple, the size and colors of Heroes 3 creatures are perfectly fit that they look like photos.Seriously, get a close look on those Defs:
1)They are nor too colorful and nether to colorless.(Many games have a fashion of a bit too colored characters and places.
2)Their shapes are perfectly fitful not to show any defects or signs of computer making.
3)Their only defects is that if u put two swordsmen in front one another, one will show his sword on the right hand(as it must be) and the other will show his sword on the left hand(wich is strange.)This is the only way i understood H3 was 2D.
