I like the H4 style. Its not such a colerful, shiny, fairy tale world style. In my opinion games were not everything is cool and stylish are much more atmospheric. And the interface of H4 was wery nice disigned.
Ok the walk animations of the creatures and the textures of the world map (omg the grassland was like a green rubber carpet) were bad but you have to note that 3do could not finish that cause of money propblems.

Having played HOMM4 and HOMM5 I think I like HOMM4 art a bit more, just because to me the 5th one looks more cartoony and the 4th has more realism to it, which I always like if it's well done

I'm reviving the thread because now we have enough HOMM6 artwork to say if there are old creatures in the game that before had better design. For example IMO the Harpy now looks like a mutated parrot and had way better looks in Heroes III. Again - we are not talking about graphics.

I need to play the game before I can say if I think it is better than H3s (excellent) style but I do know, that this is MUCH better than H5, H4, H1 and H2.

When you say art and design, do you mean both for in-game models and drawn artwork?

In this case both because we haven't yet seen all of the in-game models. We're only talking about impressions so far.

Well you of all people should understand that Harpies look more true to their mythological roots in homm3, in homm6 they look like cheap warcraft clones.
But I don't really mind the harpies in warcraft actually, they are one of the few creatures I do accept being changed, don't get me wrong... I still adore the homm3 harpies, but these new harpies have their own charms.
So here I am, checking out a thread about art style and designs when---BAM! Nightterror flips out against me because she doesn't like Harpies! And then... OMG, she likes Harpies!
And I can only sit and watch in amazement and wonder to myself, does Alzheimer afflict 20 years old people too?
Seriously, did I do so much as typing the word 'Harpies' in my post that you too, did quote?
@evinin
H6 is the best so far, and well, I don't think the unrevealed yet artwork would suck so much for me to change my mind about it. But since there's no option for this in the poll, it's a tough call. I liked the units design and scape artwork of H5 better, but I did not like its cartoonish style. H3 was not big on art, as it was very generic but at least, it was more grim and darker, which was very much to my liking. So, I would consider it a draw between those two, both which are utterly defeated by H6. H1, H2 and especially H4 are very inferior to me.

Kodial, I think that Nightterror wanted to quote my post but by accident quoted yours.
I don't think that Heroes VI sucks. It has some extremely wonderful creatures, it has some not that appealing but still with nice art, it has some that don't shine with anything. So far I'm somewhere in the middle. Anyway, the only big problem for me is that Heroes VI isn't that different from Heroes V.

Haha! I don't know, the way she went on about it, she probably meant me, knowing my liking towards mythology. And, well, I never said a thing about harpies. Not in this thread, at least.

It's definatly H2 with the best...
I'd say majority of people haven't even played H1 and H2, the 3rd is where a lot have started but either way it's all biased...probably
whichever game you started with, you might like the most regardless?

I started with H3, but my favorite so far is H5. I also played H2 before H3, but only briefly. For me, the artwork has been getting better and better as the series progressed. With only exception being H4, which sucked. Kinda like this: H6 > H5 > H3 > H4 > H2 > H1

H3 for me. Which is a bit odd considering I'm a fan of more cartoonish and colourful graphics in games instead of snow-brown-and-grey "realism" colours every single game seems to poop out nowadays. And yet H3 still manages to look colourful yet in a realistic and very fluid fashion. On graphics alone, H3 had without a doubt the best atmosphere (If it were with music included it would be tied with H4).
H2 and H5 come second to me. I really liked the simplistic looks of units back in the games, without all those snowty spikes and added details every single unit in every single game these days (h6 included) seems to have.
Developers are forgetting that units are supposed to be a general representation of a creature, not a detailed and unique hero. At least H6 is sticking to colourful graphics, that's at least a redeeming factor.
And aside all of that, H3 also had the best representation of units. Most of the creatures were never improved upon in design after H3. Except for the Pit Lord, H5 did good on that one.

Hmm, not sure about that. I played the series since Heroes 1, but I don't really hold that much nostalgia towards the early game. Sure, Heroes 2 was charming, and Heroes 3 'wow'ed me when it came out, but there's just no arguing with how graphics develops. Obviously, time goes towards better graphics from a pure technical point of view (something as simple as better resolution does play a part). I must say from the on-the-map screenshots we've seen, Heroes 6 looks stunning. Creatures I'm a bit more divided on from an art style point of view, though. Heroes 4 actually had decent map graphics, but creatures were abominable.

People what are you talking about?
HoMM4 had absolutely the BEST atmosphere from ALL HoMM series, it's the game mechanics and balance that s*ckd, but not the atmosphere and storyline (exept nature maybe).. Heroes 4 Story beats the hell out of other HoMM games altogether!
