The best Faction of Heroes Series
Okay. Inspired by radox game for the best creature, and asked for by jabanoss, this shall be a competition of all factions which occured in the series.
The factions line up before us, but we, and only we, choose who will come to the next round and, in the end, win.
The rules are following:
In the first round, the Factions are grouped in 7 groups of 5 or 4 factions each:
Group 1:
Knight H1
Knight H2
Castle H3
Life H4
Haven H5
Group 2:
Barbarian H1
Barbarian H2
Stronghold H3
Might H4
Stronghold H5
Group 3:
Sorceress H1
Sorceress H2
Rampart H3
Nature H4
Sylvan H5
Group 4:
Warlock H1
Warlock H2
Dungeon H3
Chaos H4
Dungeon H5
Group 5:
Wizard H2
Tower H3
Conflux H3
Order H4
Academy H5
Group 6:
Necromancer H2
Necropolis H3
Death H4
Necropolis H5
Group 7:
Inferno H3
Fortress H3
Inferno H5
Fortress H5
I tried to put very similar towns together, though it wasn't completely possible.
So, in this first round, everyone posts the 2 factions they want to continue the competition, or send them to me per pm (as you wish^^) I will then evaluate the whole thing and the 2 factions with most points will continue, as well as the two best third places of all, iof necessary. In the end, we'll have 16 factions continuing into round two, which will be a knockout system similar to the one in radox' thread.
Ah yes, I forgot: You can, of course, judge by an criterias you want, but I would advice to consider style, creatures, hero class, special buildings, racials (if exist) and available spells at least, as well as background, if you know it.
Have fun,
Jiriki9

Knight H2 because has both upgrades and a crusader that didnt get a lower level the the knight like H3 or H4.
Haven H5 because at least the cavalry evolution was called palladin!
Barbarian H2 because it had a ranged troll
Stronghold H3 because it had the behemoth.
Sorceress H2 because it had the phoenix as a last tier.
Nature H4 because it had the gargantuan as a level 4.
Dungeon H3 because of the troglodytes
Chaos H4 because it had the Hydra of the same level as the black dragon like H3.
Tower H3 because it had the collest looking gargoyles.
Conflux H3 because of the Phoenix returning as a non-neutral.
Necropolis H3 because of having the death knight in it.
Necropolis H5 because of the vampire actually looking like count dracula.
Fortress H3 because of the EVERYTHING + the LIZARDMAN!
Inferno H3 because of Gog and the Efreet.
PS: why is there a pikeman building in all of your H1 photos?

Awesome initiative!
Group 1:
Castle H3 - awesome looking angels, nice heroes
Haven H5 - really cool architecture
Group 2:
Barbarian H2 - TROLLS!
Stronghold H3 - They way they shoould be, except they need Trolls ofc
Group 3:
Rampart H3 - Nice mix of creatures with elves and dwarfs which all fit together very well.
Sylvan H5 - no comment
Group 4:
Dungeon H3 - THE BEST OF THE BEST, clear winner in my eyes!
Dungeon H5 - hmm it was a hard choice between Warlock H2 & Dungeon H5
I don't like gargoyles or centaurs in the faction, but Elves on the other hand... ah, nja, I don't know...
Group 5:
Tower H3 - really nice, tall towers go well with wizards
Academy H5 - Works very well with a new style for mages, even if the titans looks kinda gay.
Group 6:
Necropolis H3 - Love Dread Knights, and this is the way Vampires are supposed to look in Heroes.
Necropolis H5 - To much green, but otherwise cool, the town looks stupid however.
Group 7:
Inferno H3 - Best inferno and Devils!
Fortress H3 - THE SECOND BEST OF THE BEST, seriously a town filled with only cool creatures and cool lizardmen.

Group 1
H2 Knight - Crusader and Paladin are just epic. Plus the coolest Cavalier
Never liked Knight/Haven much, though, but I will give it to
H3 Castle
Group 2
H2 Barbarian - excellent Wolves, great everything else.
H3 Stronghold - Behemoth!!
Group 3
H2 Sorceress - Phoenix. Need I say more?
this is a close call, I loved the H4 Mantis (and Leprechaun -> Undead Transformer), but the dreadful Phoenix and some other minor details give this to
H5 Sylvan - the best town music
Group 4
H2 - the bets Hydra in the series
H5
Group 5
H2 Wizard - on second thought, I liked this more. Especially because of cool Boars and lovely titans.
H5 Academy - love the flying city, some nice creatures; but most of all - the best racial skill in H5.
Group 6
H5 Necro
H3 Necro - this was a hard choice between H3 and H2, but overall, I think H3 was a bit better (despite the absolutely horrid Vampire).
Group 7
H3 Fortress - awesome town, probably my favorite in H3.
H5 Inferno - awesome creatures, housing my favorite, the Pit Fiend/Lord.
I also can't help but note that I find the creatures being beside their dwellings in H1 to be an excellently amusing detail.

Stronghold H5
Rampart h3
Sylvan H5
Warlock H1
Warlock H3
Wizard H2
Tower H3
Necro H2
Necro H3
Inferno H3
Fortress H3
My arguments below:
Group 3
Knight H2: Loved the Archer and the Crusader which I hope will return someday!
Castle H3: Amazing creatures such as the Archangel, Griffin (best in the series imo), Crusader, Monk and Champion. One of the best factions in HoMM.
Group 2
Stronghold H3: Incredible theme song and cool creatures. Thunderbirds are the most beautiful in the series and Behemoths the most awesome.
Stronghold H5: Very unique and creative faction that is one of the most enjoyable in the series! All creatures except the Warrior were interesting. I loved the Goblins tuff.
Group 3 (this was really hard, I wanted to include H2 Sorceress aswell!)
H3 Rampart: Wow, most amazing architecture in all of the games! Green and Gold Dragons are some of the best looking Dragons in the series. Sharpshooters were incredible if that counts.
H5 Sylvan: While H3 had excellent architecture, Sylvan with its sun in the horizon is the most beautiful town overall! My favorite faction with Stronghold in H5. I love the fast playstyle and they had some really interesting creatures.
Group 4
H1 Warlock: Oh, both the Hydra and Dragon are both really fabolous! What I fancy about the H1 towns is that you actually see the creatures wandering around in them!
H3 Warlock: By FAR the best Warlock faction and one of the best in the series. All the creatures look incredibly cool (and the heroes do aswell). Please, if Dungeon returns in H6 make it look more like this. This was an amazing town and who doesn't miss Scorpicores and level 5 Minotaurs? H5 Minos were a joke.
Group 5 (I think conflux feels a bit out of place here xD)
H2 Wizard: I really liked the theme here and the terrain! The Boars were really cool and the Golems too! Titans looked amazing as usual but their dwelling was the best Titan dwelling in all of the games.
H3 Tower: Also an incredible faction with excellent FAST Gargoyles, really nice Archmagi, cool Genies, AWESOME Naga Queens and TITANS! H3 Tower had some of the coolest creatures in all of the series.
Group 6
H2 Necro: I really like the Pyramid and the Mummies and the whole look of the town is very haunting. Liches looked incredible in this game but so did the Bone dragon! Oh, and the BLAR! Vampires.
H3: Okay seriously this town made me terrified as a kid. I barely dared to enter Necropolis towns! Amazing atmosphere and all the creatures looked really cool except the Zombie! I loved Necromancy. xD
Group 7
Inferno H3: Wow, this is the only Demon town I have liked! So sinister and such a cool atmosphere and architecture. I miss the Pit lords, Efreets and the amazing-looking Archdevils here a lot! Oh, and Grail is amazing aswell.
Fortress H3: Why! WHY!? Did they have to remove one of the coolest town ever in the HoMM series. So unique and cool. I want my swamp town back! Please! Dragonflies, Lizardmen, Basilisk, GORGONS, Wyverns and Hydras! Were did you go? ;(

It hadn't, at least not in the original lineup, did it? It was phoenix or fairy dragon, I think...
Quote: (I think conflux feels a bit out of place here xD)
there were only 4 wizard towns & the wizards are which fit best with conflux imo - both rather magical factions...or, to put it not-so-nice: Where would Conflux NOT feel out of place?

Castle H3, Haven H5
-Both are artistically very cool and have a more interesting lineup than the H2 town.
Barbarian H2, Stronghold H3
-Great lineups at both towns, and GREAT musical themes. Stronghold's is one of the best in the series.
Sorceress H2, Rampart H3
-Speaking of the best themes in the series, Sorceress is up there as well. Phoenixes were just beautiful and the whole town gave off an air of nature and beauty that H5 Sylvan and even H3 Rampart couldn't match. Rampart comes close though.
Warlock H2, Dungeon H3
-The Warlock Town from H2 was very atmospheric, and who could forget the mighty black dragons? Same goes for H3 Dungeon; some really great creatures there.
Tower H3, Conflux H3
-H3 Tower has my favorite Wizard lineup (Greek Titans FTW) and I actually really liked Conflux's lineup as well. H5 Academy just didn't really do it for me, neither did H2 Wizard.
Necromancer H2, Necropolis H3
H2 Necromancer was a phenomenal town. The Bone Dragons were more badass-looking than they've ever been since, and it positively exuded atmosphere. Same goes for H3 Necro; I found the theme better fitting than H5's (not to say that H5's is bad, H3's is just great) and I preferred the creature lineup in H5.
Fortress H3 (big surprise right? ), Inferno H3-
Fortress is my all-time favorite town; beautiful music, amazing art style, great creatures, great heroes. I absolutely love it. H3 Inferno gave off the "demon" vibe a bit better than H5's, and I like the designs of H3's Inferno far better; Imps that actually look dangerous, demons that aren't hunched over little things and more traditional-looking devils.

I won't forget my own vote^^
Group 1:
Castle H3
Haven H5
Both greater than the H2 one, imo. Unfortunately, that they are so close. H3, btw, is much better in many aspects. Like the idea of the unit-upgrading racial in H5 though...
Group 2:
Barbarian H2
Stronghold H3
H5 stronghold is great in some aspects, too, but I HATE the orcs as half-demons
H4 Might also had somethign to it, imo, but the harpies & thiudnerbird were SO ugly they threw it out...and the "**** my ***" battle pose of the barbarians O.O I seriously asked myself if that was a joke or so^^
Group 3:
Sorceress H2
Rampart H3
Easy choice here, for me. Nature is out, though its idea is good, it was poorly done (well, as all H4 factions). H2 sorceress is better than H1 one and rampart leagues over sylvan!!!
Group 4:
Warlock H2
Dungeon H3
Thought a while about chaos as well, but Warlock from H2 was to epic and dungeon of H3 is sooo much better than in H5 in most aspects (especially the weak hydras of H5, and the far-too-much dark elves!!!)
Group 5:
Wizard H2
Tower H3
Again, easy. H2 WIzard was a beautifull town and, in HoMM a rather unique combiantion in many aspects (and a great one, too, imo!) Tower is really nice, too!
Group 6:
Necropolis H3
Necropolis H5
I prefer, at this point, the H5 necropolis above the H2 one. Mummy was poor, imo. And necromancy as a racial much better...
Group 7:
Inferno H3
Fortress H5
All not my favourites. In opoosite to many, I liked H5 fortress - though it coudl have been done better! Also I allwas found the swamp-crawlers of H3 fortress so annoying so often that they are not in. Also, between the infernos, it WAS some choice...but I',m not so a fan of the grunt and the hell stallion - I prefer the gog & the efreet. I also considered, dispite my slight dislike , to take no inferno in, but decided against it...

I'm indifferent. Honerable mention to purple trolls from H1, however.
Group 3
Sorceress H2
Sylvan H5
I did like my Gold Dragons, however, and Nature was actually the only town in Heroes 4 that looked good.
Group 4
Warlock H2
Dungeon H5
Multiple upgrades on dragons ruled.
Group 5
Tower H3
Academy H5
Since H2, Titans were my favorite units. Academy H5 is best looking town ever.
Group 6
I'm pretty indifferent. I liked the looks of H5 Necropolis, but units were a bit meh.

H5 Fortress (!)

Group 1 (Even though Haven is my least favourite faction because of the lack of fantasy and the fact its swarming with stupid humans, but I guess humans have to be in such a game, unfortunately )
H3 Castle - it was the one that introduced Griffins and Angels, adding some variety to the human lineup.
H5 Haven - same reasons as H3, plus it had good music and architecture.
Group 2 (I liked the H5 Stronghold too, it just lacked the Roc/Thunderbird...the Wyvern was very nice to return though )
H2 Barbarian - the last "Barbarian" town to have the offensive Wolves by themselves (in H3 they are ridden by orcs, which IMO is a bad idea)
H3 Stronghold - the best lineup IMO because it had all: Ogres, Rocs/Thunderbirds, Cyclops, and Behemoth(with a good deign, unlike the H4 one) Also I enjoyed the sunny canyon theme and music.
Group 3 (I have to say I loved ALL of them, but if I had to choose 2...)
H3 Rampart - interesting architecture and calm music that reminds me of Shire from the Lord of the Rings . The lineup, as with all HOMMs, was great, and introduced Dendroids(later seen in H5 as Treants) and Pegasi(I wish they returned, not necessarily with a woman riding them )
H4 Nature - I actually liked the music. FARIE DRAGONS AND PHOENIXES made recruitable, YES! The altar of summoning(not sure if that's what its called, I played the Polish version) allowed recruiting Elementals, Mantis, Waspworts(I found them really cool), Leprechauns and Satyrs.
Group 4 (Even though I didn't choose the H5 Dungeon, the Dark Elves were OK for me, but I hated the fact they took the place of Harpy, Medusa, and even the Troglodyte)
H2 Warlock - An idea of this faction in a dark and mysterious Warlock castle(as opposed to underground Dungeon in later installments) was interesting and worked out for me. Lineup was good, and even though I prefer the quadripedal Hydra, that one had a charm
H3 Dungeon - GREAT lineup: Troglodytes, Harpies, Beholders, Medusas, Minotaurs, Manticores, Black Dragons were all great. I cannot believe some of those creatures were missing in H5 . (Side note: I like the return of Manticore in H6 as Lamassu, but wish it had an ACTUAL Lion face)
Group 5 (The H5 Academy was great, too, even with the different middle eastern theme, awesome architecture, Rakshasa Rajas , and music...the only thing that I didn't like were the Gargoyles' design, and Djinn design, they should attack with magic, not a sword, and WTH no head?)
H3 Conflux - (seems to have inspired H5 Academy architecture-wise) I loved the theme, music was charming and soothing, and the creature lineup was unique and I'm sad that so many people dislike it. I love the fact that Elementals were made recruitable in-town, not to mention Sprites and Phoenixes
H3 Tower - The snow theme matched it very well(though I have nothing against desert) THIS IS THE WAY GARGOYLES SHOULD LOOK! Also it was nice to have Genies, Nagas(though if Naga get their own faction in H6, I wish Rakshasa Raja stays too), and Mages(I prefer these from the massive turban ones )
Group 6 (All of them were good for me. I actually thought the H4 Vampire was the best looking, sophisticated yet scary, all the other ones were good as well, but the H3 one looked too much like a Ghoul . And the Venom Spawn ROCKED!. H5 Necropolis was also great IMO, the only reason I didn't choose it is because it didn't do the Bone Dragon justice design and stat-wise. Bone Dragon was best looking in H2 and H4)
H2 Necromancer - BONE DRAGON design was the best up to date (I love this guy and I hope he'll at least be neutral in H6, now that the Fate Weaver took his place). Also the creepy music and overall look with the massive Pyramids was creative.
H3 Necropolis - Same as H2 but now introduced the Death Knights and the music was EVEN MORE frightening The only bad thing was the poor Bone Dragon design.
Group 7 (I have to defend H5 Fortress a little here - even though there were too many Dwarf units, the theme, town design, mammoth-riding heroes , Runelore, were AWESOME and UNIQUE. The boring lineup could have been improved by taking out the Thane, Berserker, and Skirmisher, and replacing them with some Norse Mythology creatures, while still leaving the cool Magma Dragons and Rune Priests )
H3 Inferno - best Inferno lineup IMO because it had Gogs, solid-looking Imps and Demons(unlike H5) EFREET . The Devil looked good as a tall, slim, but most importantly intelligent and mischevious one(the H5 one is stupid) Cerberi looked great, too. the only bad design was Pit Lord(thankfully he lookes Badass in H6, its a shame there is no Nightmare there, though))
H3 FORTRESS - MY FAVOURITE TOWN! It was sooo creative yet the only town not to make an appearance further than H3 . Along with the nice Heroes, swampy town design and suitable/interesting music, the lineup was PERFECT: Gnolls, Lizardmen, Serpent Flies, Basilisks, Gorgons, Wyverns, and Hydras Some say there were too many beasts there, but that's the case with H3 Dungeon, yet no one complains about that. H3 FORTRESS, PLEASE RETURN
So there are my choices, although it doesn't necessarily mean I dislike the other ones.
