Trouble-free multiplayer in HOMM 2 using Linux (with Wine)
Apparently I have found a solution to play Homm 2 multiplayer over internet without any problem. My tests at home was successful. I did not do any configuration at all. Surprisingly, it works like a charm by default.
Equipment I used:
1. Ubuntu 10.10 as my OS.
It's free, reliable and open source. Easy to use.

2. HOMM II Gold on Wine
Homm 2 Gold includes Price of Loyalty expansion pack.
It runs through Wine easily and without any issue. No problem with graphics or sound effects. I haven't tried to play with music but I think it would work too.
When you run the game through Wine, select NEW GAME-MULTIPLAYER-NETWORK-TCP/IP in HOMM 2 and use IP addresses you and your friends get from Hamachi. Thanks to the Hamachi, we do not have to struggle with port forwarding.
If you don't have its CD, add registry following keys:
Quote: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\New World Computing\Heroes of Might and Magic 2\1.0]
"AppPath"=".\\"
"CDDrive"="."
You can edit registry by pressing ALT+F2 and typing "regedit" if wine is installed to your Ubuntu system.
3. Hamachi for Linux (Legacy version)
Hamachi 0.9.9.9-20 (Legacy): http://files.hamachi.cc/linux/
Hamachi² (Beta): https://secure.logmein.com/US/labs/
"make install" and "hamachi-init" commands in the directory to where you extract hamachi archive is enough to setup and initialize hamachi on Ubuntu.
4. Haguichi
Gnome front-end for Hamachi.
You can get it from http://www.haguichi.net/
This program is not required but I recommend it as it simplifies using Hamachi on Ubuntu with its clean and neat Gnome style design.
After you start Hamachi as I explained above under [3], you can simply run Haguichi from Applications-Internet menu from your desktop and create a nickname and create a room/join a room to meet with your friends by using its interface, without having to enter any commands and parameters.
While Haguichi is running you can run HOMM 2 and open a new game or load a saved game in the way I explained above to play multiplayer game over internet.
Only difficulty is game resolution. When I change it from 640*480 picture gets distorted. However playing in that resolution is not so bad.
That's all... Enjoy your ageless game. Have fun!

I can gladly confirm that in our more than 3 hours HOMM 2 game over internet yesterday with the equipment described above we only had one crash at a specific point. We saved the game playing a little after such "crash point" (it was a hero's landing from ship); then we loaded the game and problem was gone. We did not face with any other crash thereafter. It was a real pleasure to be able to play such an old game over internet flawlessly after long years on a very different software platform.
Only issue we noticed was sometimes we could not make our heroes move by clicking on the map. On such cases we clicked on the destination and pressed "M" key on the keyboard to make them go.
Let me note that we were playing without having modified Wine configuration during we experienced that crash. After the crash we changed default OS of Wine as Windows 98 from Windows XP.
Let me also note that we use Wine 1.2.1-0ubuntu1 (wine1.2) on Ubuntu 10.10.
