Accent Changes
I was just curious about accent Bilingual changes etc.
I know some can speak different languages, some even have changes of accents depending on where they are at etc.
Of course I am seeing a British chick & we got big plans in the future to come
My question is, say for example if i move out to the UK.
Do accents change during the years i am there. You know, I start to sound more British, from hearing it all the time. Or vice versa if she moved out here with her kids? Would they start to sound more American?
I figured the Kids would more then older people, since their minds are more raw.
I figured it wont always be the case, but I wonder if it is possible.
Cheers, darn now i am sounding like one already
I am doing my own head in!
Now lets have a listen

Yes, they do change. If you aren't pressing for it it can take a VERY long time though.
And some accents don't vanish, ever, unless you specifically try to learn out of them. (The infamous russian accent for example.)

The weird part is when you start to consciously notice your own accent, where otherwise it just sounds 'standard' to you.

I heard a story...
In a group of friends, one of them went foreign, and when they held a meeting who celebrated 10 or 20 years since graduation, that one who emigrated spoke the closest to what their originally spoke back in the days in term of accent. She more or less spoke the exact same accent as she had left.
Now... If you are leaving a english speaking place for another english speaking place, of course your accent will get messed up. But remember: You could also get into the habit of changing accent depending on who you speak too

Yeah, I have that when I speak English. Being Dutch, English is my second language. I find a heavy Dutch accent in English extremely ugly. Therefor I did what I could during highschool to unlearn my accent. It really helped that from my 5th I've been watching Enlish TV. It worked and now by default I speak a sort of accentless BBC Enligsh. However watching so much TV since I was little, I've been confronted with many an English accents. I can now reasonably mimic various Enlgish and American accents. And I have to habit of imitating the accent of the people I am talking to. This usually happens within several minutes.
The problem is that some people think I am mocking them, while I'm doing that. Especially when I'm in a pub or bar.

Although I think some American accents are cute I would hope to keep my English one.

I'm surprised HC's resident Anglophile hasn't posted here yet. Too busy.
Believe it or not, I've been practicing a few northern and southern British accents for a while. I get most of my ammo from various British comedians. It's mainly for amusement, so people might get offended if I visited the UK.

It was weird really.
I visited UK.
She saw me.
She threw me on the street.
We made passionate love.
Then we lost contact for a year.
We started talking again.
She will come out here.
I will throw her on the sidewalk.
Makeup love.
Then wait another year

Hmm interesting, interesting...
But judging from the way Selcy reacted I'm not sure that's how it went. Or maybe I screwed things up for you two by asking, seeing how Acu revealed his plan to leave Selcy after a year

Hehe We knew each other on facebook as friends for awhile.
When she lost her hubby, I was there for her.
We talked for hours everyday with comforting words.
I wanted to help & be there for her.
After a few months we got closer.
Close to the point where we shared everything.
We know about each other.
We even sent presents to each other.
In July she is flying out here first. We will see each other for 2 weeks.
After that I am making my own trip to Glouchester! Did i say it right hun
Visit her & the kids. With her aggressive GF's
Hehe it will be interesting

Thank you Acu. Yes that is exactly how things happened although Acu's first account sounded way more fun hehe. He has been a great help and an amazing friend to me in more ways than he knows.
I am so excited and can't wait to meet him in July and we know our relationship will only get stronger. We both know what we want the outcome to be and our relationship to lead to so watch this space or maybe another thread on HC .

Where I live, we use dozens of languages. People in Java have a different language from those in Borneo. Even among West Java, Central Java, and East Java, each has their own language. By language I mean both accent and vocabulary-wise. So when I meet (I'm from East Java) someone from Bali, I wouldn't have a clue what s/he is speaking if Balinese is used. But if we both use Bahasa - the national language which is taught in all elementary schools - then problem solved. That's the common language to use when different ethnics meet. But even when we use Bahasa, the accent can tell the difference where someone is coming from.
So it's always funny every time I meet my relatives from West Java (speaking Sundanese) or Sulawesi, it'll take a while until one side gets used with the other accent. And eventually one side will yield and forgetting his/her original accent then following to use that of the counterpart Some accents are nice on ears, thus easy to fall in love with. Sometimes I'm experimenting by sticking hard using my own, not letting myself gets swayed by the other accent, and just waiting to see when my conversation buddy will fall prey and begin to use mine. It's like a game of influence.
I suppose it would be the same in your case, Acu. In a smaller community, it will come down to who influences who when it comes to accent, or other habits for that matter
____________
But now I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it.

Of the top of my head? No. I could not. Like I said, I speak BBC English by default.
Give me someone with that accent to talk to for a few mins, the perhaps I could.
