Yasi
Well it's only about 11 hrs til cyclone Yasi will hit. I will be ok where I am but have a lot of friends and family in the firing line. The media has built this up and tomorrow we will know just how devestating it will be. My thoughts are with the people of north Qld, just stay safe.

Do cyclones from the ocean often reach Australia? I thought it would be close enough to the pole to mostly avoid that. I saw the news on my homepage and I was kinda surprised.
GL. People are prepared for it so I'm sure your friends and family will be safe.

The most dangerous thing a hurricane/cyclone brings is flooding and tornado spawns. If your friends live in a well built house that is above the storm surge area the odds are good they will be ok. Of course one should stay indoors and have windows boarded up if possible. Hopefully they have food and water stored up as affected areas are slow to have utilities restored.

And also several assault rifles with, at minimum, several dozen spare magazines. I'd also recommend a complimentary cyclone fence with barbed wire at the top and guard dogs posted outside and trip wires in the lawn. If looters come near the property the censors can trigger and you can launch a few incendiary grenades from the makeshift murder-hole you should have constructed as well as have a backup flamethrower in case a few stragglers get into closer range. The doors and windows should be reinforced with steel panels with a main assault battery stationed in the living room- I wouldn't settle for anything smaller than a 40mm barrel in case they have half-tracks or bulldozers (a common vehicle looters can use to get through barricades). Children don't necessarily make good defenders, but they have a lot of energy so you can use their labor to tunnel a subterranean escape route in the event that you get overwhelmed, and have one of the smarter ones rig the tunnel with plastic explosive charges so the attackers can't follow you on the way out. It goes without saying that everyone should have a spare serrated combat knife, a pair of pliers, and make sure at least one person has a set of jumper cables. A camouflaged get-away car can be stored at the end of the escape route you create with several cans of spare gasoline stored in the trunk. Everybody should also hunt down and slaughter as many small woodland animals around their house as possible and store their corpses in a large freezer. I wouldn't take the time to skin them right away since you'll need all the time you can get to prepare for other things.

Yeah, severe weather pretty much sucks. I'm being buried right now under 2+ feet of snow in Chicago. Biggest winter storm in nearly 50 years.

The winter has been mild so far in Canada compared to other years...
Good luck, you're with our thoughts and prayers.

I'm just wondering, why a lot of people in America, even in the danger zones, builds houses with wood. In a catastrophic event, it's like houses made of paper. Goes poof.
Why not solid buildings in a tornado-and-quake endangered zone? What, too expensive or something?

pretty much. most of the reason why there are so many wooden houses in america is that lumber is an incredibly cheap resource.
anyway, for those who are in Yasi, I say good luck.
I was in a Yasi once.

I got a visual image of you sitting on a bench covered in snow and I lol'd. I'm in the middle of that snowstorm right now, but it's much more tame at this point , plus New England is full of freaks (in a good way) that run outside and start playing on the roads as soon as the snow hits.

I would be eating my own words if this happened earlier in the year, but it still stands. Only 1 snowstorm so far... and it came from Texas!
