Homm1 - AI cheating?
Hi, I was just replaying HOMM1 for nostalgia's sake the past couple of nights.
I loved this game in 1995, and have replayed periodically ever since.
I've been noticing some stuff that didn't bother me in the past, but now it does.
I've played the map "Around the Bay" about 3 times with normal AI and lost. I just finally beat it by turning all the difficulty settings to minumum.
What bothers me most is two points:
1) The combat grid is so small, my units can't move. The cavalry have gotten stuck behind trees, other troops, etc., so often that it started to take all the fun out of the game.
2) This is the main point of the thread - the AI seems to go straight for and to collect every randomly friendly troop on the map. I keep seeing really stupid stuff like 40 gargoyles on week one, 20 ogres on week two, 25 cyclops by week three, etc. For all the times that I lost the "Around the Bay" map, it was because of these huge unearned troops possesed by the enemy.
Point number two is basically ruining the game for me. What were they thinking? And why did I never notice it before? It must be because I was a noob gamer when I played in 1995, and that now I have all the more recent, better versions of HOMM to play.
Tactics and strategy don't seem to make much difference at all in HOMM1. Rather, you have to get to know each map well enough to exploit things like portals, whirlpools, hidden mines and creature dwellings, etc. Bummer.

It's tough to go back to the smaller battle grid, certainly - there's much less variety in HOMM1 battles than in any of the ensuing games for a wide variety of reasons. And the joiners problem is pretty extreme - I remember a group of gargoyle joiners in particular could be very quickly devastating.
But there's still a lot of tactics and strategy, no? And it's not like knowing the map went away in HOMM2 and HOMM3 - it's still a huge advantage, and whirlpools and portals still exist. Plus, creature dwellings are much more crucial by HOMM3.

Its the same on some maps in HoMM3. Pestilence lake for example, I think it was created just to disgrace players. I`ve noticed many interesting things happening on this map:
I go to battle with 5 Morale, AI comes with 1 and he gets Morale 3-4 times per round - I do once for the whole combat. Luck - the same as morale.
He goes with a very weak army and throng of Hydras or Minotaurs join him but when I replay the turn - they attack me.
Expert slow becomes suddenly removed from a single creature in the next round ( WoG, probably a bug but never happened to me ).
I have observed that map as I have played it for over 500 times and I did a lot of tests and simulations. To me - the AI manipulates anything that has a chance to happen ( fear/creature`s special/morale/luck/first strike when with equal speed ). This was the reason that made me stop playing The Disciples as there was a chance to hit there...it was clearly manipulated.
So, I am not surprised, the HoMM engine needs some corrections I think.
