I really liked Heroes III's hotseat and I my friends played it very often during my early school years but I never played it that much by myself and the Campaign never interested me that much - I remember that I played the first Haven mission with Christian (I think that was his name, and I think his speciality was ballistas) several times - tryning to be interested to continue. One thing I hate the most with the old Heroes universe was that it had the alien-like Kreegans in it. Aliens shouldn't be in medieval fantasy 
I do love the Heroes III design though and the only way I can describe it, is that it feels like it has been taken out from a old mystic church window with very decorated stained glass or a mysterious old medieval drawing from a old bok or something. Probably thanks to the 2D grafics  .
I do like Heores V a little more but they are pretty close and the reason for that is that in 5 I do like the campaign and the World of Ashan interests me more than the one in the old Heroes games.
As people recommend games I must put in the Total War series - especially the latest, Total War: Shogun 2.

for me HoMM4 was one of the favourites!!!
HoMM 3 was classique of course!!!
HoMM 5 ... i didn't like it to be honest.. played it still though..

By the way, now I see why people demand a random map generator for H6. RMG in H5 sucked but the default maps were great. Now that I'm playing H3, most of the default maps are really bad. The other heroes coming to me in the beginning of the game, always some tricky thing like "you can't have mage guilt level 4 in this map", "you can't upgrade level 7 in this map", "taxes got lowered" "they got high now", ah, leave me alone and let me play decently already. After 7 or 8 different map attempts now I had to create a random map. And now I'm playing like I wanted.

Right now I am addicted to Plants vs Zombies, and also addicted to a song about it This
However, there are some computer games (not counting console games) that are timeless.
Diablo
Doom
Wolfenstien
Quake
The list is near endless.
Some are epic, some are epically bad, and some need to be burned by fire to exercise the demons.
I've played heroes since heroes 1, and all of the Might and magic ones (or I think I have at least). I have to admit I am partial to Heroes 5..after Tote came out that is. Original was a bit..buggy.

I'm playing Titan Quest for the time being.
I don't find it as frustrating to play as the Diablos and I've only died once so far, but I'm still in Greece so who knows...
Throwing out some more faves here:
Giants: Citizen Kabuto
Painkiller
Roller Coaster Tycoon 2
Serious Sam: The Second Encounter
Tropico 3
I guess I am a fan of wack games with lotsa colors

Haven't played as Dungeon yet. Played Castle, Fortress, Rampart and right now Inferno. I loved Fortress but Rampart was very boring

Seriously, first I have to say "sorry" to all this "H3 is the snowing best" people out there.
I've been playing the game for some time now. Yes it is very good. I can imagine if I played the game back then when you were playing I would also be in love with it but it is obvious the reason most of these people find the game that incredible now is the rememberance of the past, the joy they got from it back then, sweet childhood memories, etc.
The game mechanics are very far from perfect, creature abilities are all alike, spells are alike, creatures are alike except for their appearance of course. Factions are imbalanced. The absence of ATB bar is taking away a lot from the game for me.
Sorry, yes it is a good game, yes maybe a perfect strategy game for its age but don't say that now in 2011. H5-TOTE is far more better a game for me.

Maybe you should check out King's Bounty then?
Edit: I have a confession to make as well.
I play Heroes games solely for of the aesthetics and because I find the whole "clash of mythology" concept interesting.
I don't really give a rat's buttocks about the gameplay because I really suck at strategy games (among others).
I know I'm in the minority, but there you have it.

Deus Ex. The first one, not Invisible War. One of the best PC games. Great combination of FPS/RPG with a very good story.
And the third installment is coming later this year. Waiting for it anxiously. :-)

One of Us! Okay, so I haven't been here in so long that I had to create a new identity and was always just a lurker, but Fortress >> all.
As for confessions, I've loved all the Heroes games (except 5 which was far too buggy in the beginning which is why I haven't been here in so long), and the one that started them all the original King's Bounty, so I have no confession to make there.
Sacriligeously though, I've never really given Baldur's Gate 2 a chance despite enjoying almost any fantasy RPG that isn't complete junk. I don't think I've ever gotten out of the starting area despite trying 3 or 4 times, just couldn't get into it for some reason. And I did like BG1.

Since you are an eminent Moderator, I shall abstain from commenting.
I am currently playing at H5/v3.1 on a 25˝-inch monitor (1900 x 1200 rez), with a powerful videocard, all graphical features to the max :
In my hallucinatory self-delusion, I fail to perceive how H3 could have better aesthetics & elegance.
For example : Compare the very ugly H3 Inferno city to the extremely gorgeous H5 Inferno cityscape.
I suppose that "ugly" and "gorgeous" are subjective notions ... but 1999 2D paintings cannot match 2006 3D dynamics. That's an obvious fact.
Like the OP, I wonder why H5 is denigrated by the H3 cultists.
