Sorry I am not going to comment any further about Diablo III and it's gameplay since I haven't played it since it's release. I'm sure it now is a thousand times the game it once was.
But I just want to add a comment about the plot in H&Ss. In D1 and D2 the story was good and subtle. The story line with Marius with his telling about the Dark Wanderer for Baal was nicely done. But yes overall the story previous games wasn't that big of a deal, but it was subtle.
However in Diablo III it was badly done, both the story and how it was told. The biggest problem was that it was so much in your face.
Not the biggest problem with the game itself I guess, but enough to give me ill feelings just thinking about the game.

This is actually a deep rooted problem. I used to love Blizzard and all their universes, but times have changed. :/

@Doom
Limiting my freedom so I can try something else?  Isn't that essentially what Diablo 3 did?  You can respec your characters in both POE and Torchlight II.  Not sure why that is an issue.

I really do not care about uniqueness for my builds.  I play to have fun.

I do have Diablo II.  Again, I played the game to have fun.  I did not care what my stats were and built them to how I wanted to play the game.  Therefore, you are incorrect that everybody in Diablo II built their characters the same way.

Again, what mod support is there for Diablo III exactly?  How is the game being kept fresh?  You may not count mods but many players do.  Fan made content is a way to add longevity and fresh ideas to a game, both which Diablo III really could use.

Magic find was irrelevant to my enjoyment in Path of Exile.  Then again, I am not the kind of player who whines about drop rates.  I understand that legendaries are just that: legendary.

Of course Path of Exile and Torchlight II cater to Diablo II crowd.  You know why?  Because Diablo III did not.  As you correctly stated, all Blizzard really does is release games with refreshed graphics.  Blizzard is not a game known for its innovation.  It should stick with what it knows.  It knew Diablo II and ignored what made the game great.  Thankfully Path of Exile and Torchlight came along to scratch that itch a lot of people felt Blizzard ignored.

I never stated the plots were great in Torchlight or Path of Exile.   It never felt like they were aiming at some grand narrative.  Hell, Path of Exile only really made sense when I read an analogy of it being Australia the game.  Diablo III tried really hard to have a plot and it was so bad it was pathetic.  If you are going to try, at least put some effort into it.  That said, they certainly captured the Lord of Terror's essence well,  I was truly terrified by the constant chats and monologues.

I do not understand your ardent defense of Diablo III.  I'll admit the game had its moments when it came out but ultimately it was mediocre.  Blizzard got lazy and the game failed to live up to the hype.  I am not saying it is a horrible game but a mediocre game that doesn't deserve the praise.

Lastly, your first character doesn't have to be a magic find sorceress in Path of Exile.  My first character was a Maurader and I had quite a bit of fun with him.

I played both Torchlight 2 and Diablo 3. They are the first games I've played in this genre. Torchlight 2 I finished. Diablo 3 I didn't. I found both of them dreadfully repetitive and boring. Click, click click, click, click, sift through a bunch of junk, people really enjoy this? Honestly, I don't get the appeal.

But to each his own, I guess.

I loved the first two games, havent bought 3 because there's no off-line playing. The fun part is not the click click click and kill, it is building a character and finding cool items. I heard the Auction House ruined that also but at least they turned around from their mistake with the expansion pack.

Why do people keep saying that Diablo 3 is over appreciated, it surprisingly got good reviews but duh, all major titles get good reviews.. in places like metacritic you could see that the general opinion of people was that the game bombed. It has 3.9 user score!  (funnily 8.8 from critics). It got a lot of hate, not praise.

The expansion is better indeed.

@OmegaDestroyer

The reason he is defending Diablo 3 is because he actually played the expansion that is like 100x better than the original and you didn't, judging from your posts.

I also don't understand with your praising of PoE and TL2, and saying how they are superior games to D3. As Doom said, if people want more D2, go and play D2 and 1000 mods that it has for it...

I really didn't enjoy PoE that much and it got boring really quickly, a ton of stuff that I really disliked in that game. I didn't even play TL2, I was just watching friend playing it and was repelled by it immediately. I also got pretty bored by Diablo 3, I was saying to my friends that are Diablo hardcore fans how game isn't well done, got ton of flaws, story is pathetic and it gets repetitive way too fast. I still stand by that statement for original Diablo 3, but expansion really changed a lot, and in the end I like it more than any previous Diablo title.

In the end, it all comes down to opinion and what do you like. I just find it ridiculous that you are bad-mouthing D3 expansion when you didn't even try it, and when you compare expansion to original, those are completely different games.

I don't really know the player base of PoE and TL2, but I don't see them having bigger player base than D3 right now, even if you combine the player bases of those two games, it shouldn't be bigger than D3 player base. If I am wrong, I will gladly accept it, but I just don't see that happening at the moment...

Please show me where I bad-mouthed the expansion, RMZ.  I will wait.

Since you are not going to find it, I will opine on it now.  It does not matter how great the expansion is; the damage is done.  Diablo III failed to impress me so there would be little reason for me to support an expansion.

@Corribus

The genre does tend to wear out its welcome pretty quickly.

Well I guess it's the same with Diablo II.

Back then, I came from an environment of Heroes 3 and Might and Magic 7, pretty much. The freedom of playing with a character in such a way which Diablo 2 offered was very different from Might and Magic, and when I had no idea what each and every skill could do, the skill tree looked so beautiful.

I didn't get into the game for the items. When I played M&M 7 (before I could read English very well), items weren't a big part of the game for me. I remember the only time I ever thought "wow these items rocks" was when I got blasters.

Also it was a friend who'd the game at first, and the first char I made was a sorceress, which never got played more on, while our first joined char was a necromancer, which only got to around level 8-10 or so. As such, there was a lot of unexplored potential for something that had already sold me.

It didn't help much that my other friends didn't find the game very interesting, and back then internet was really expensive, so I could only play with myself, pretty much.
What kept me in the game however was the social side, and I did feel a bit sad when I the other day found a unique item, an item I once lost a potential friendship over, an item which I now throw away since it's really worthless, like any pixelated stuff.
Because for me it was always about completing the game, but I'd never ever been in a social game before, so I kinda got stuck on b.net, not really playing the game as much as simply chatting away. Endless MF-runs certainly weren't for me, hence why I didn't really do that.

Ok then, my mistake. So you are bad-mouthing D3 without expansion and he is defending D3 with expansion? I don't really see the point, nor I see the point in arguing over which game is superior and better, because that really is just an opinion...

If anything, Blizzard is known for making their games better and better after each expansion(WoW is an exception), but I guess you really don't like the game so you won't even try the expansion.

EDIT: Oh and you asked how is Diablo 3 being kept fresh, patching is the answer. They are patching the game a lot, literally every 1-2 months, and with every patch they are adding ton of new Legendary items, sets and are changing the mechanic of some spells, skills, monsters etc. Changes aren't as big as with modding the game, but they are definitely noticeable.

Omega, you should give Reaper of Souls a try if possible. It's really fun

The only small downside is that Crusader is very OP

As for me, Torchlight 2 and PoE are precisely mediocre, or even poor (3-4/10 max) - copypaste of Diablo II content that just can't catch the flavor, and is boring as ****. Especially PoE is killed by MF, gear checks and horrible levelup pace&rewards. Torchlight 2 - I should be using past tense cause it's dead - got killed by the moment people started using console commands, making it a gimmicky single player game.

Diablo 3 is a fun game. Great? Not so. But still very fun, well, for as long as you will like the style of game.

A game is often compared to others currently out ; Diablo 2 didn't have major competition back in the days, which leads to the illusion that Diablo 3 sucks bad.

I like the limited skill system ; I dont like the lack of stats and stats on weapons, lack of tech tree... God damn, they could've made one with an unlimited reset button instead of none at all... Yet blizzard still managed to make it fun anyways.

The real problem is that its repetitive and offers snowty pvp, no leet strategy, just have fun with the grind and once you tried all characters and their play styles, its time to move on. It doesn't offer as much replay value than other games.

You have stats in the form of Paragon levels.

As for the new patch, I'm not happy. Ladder system is what I hate with passion - I'm simply against forcing people to replay the same "storyline" in order to get exclusive parts of content. Content should IMHO not be exclusive, and I see such tricks in both "builds" and "ladders" - all of them aimed to falsely increase the longevity of the game.

So a big minus for Blizzard on that one. If it wasn't the "ladder-only" items, I wouldn't care, but... we all remember how OP they were in diablo2 in relation to regular non-ladder content. Now I'm pretty sure the story will repeat.

So you either accept that you're doomed to wear inferior gear for eternity, or participate in the same pointless "ladder" activity again, and again, and again, every X months.

dunno if anyone actually liked this game here (well, I do so far).
I was wondering, when you play the sorceress, without expansions, what of Ray of frost and Disintegrate is better to pick as they are similar in use. I guess it depends on patches as well...

if I remember well, I have ray of frost dealing 280% damage as well as slowing down the target, with damage going as high as 350 or 450% if I focus the beam on a single enemy.

disintegrate only deals 220% damage, but I can fire a double beam, also you have to unlock it, whereas you have ray of frost from the start, so I guess disintegrate must have some advantages over ray of frost?

Those skills don't differ too much honestly. And currently, there is one build that works, and it's the fire wizard (firebird set).

There are new items on the way in 2.2, so this may change.
