Baldur's Gate 3 is coming
Well, revealed this week:
https://youtu.be/XJhawYZwvPI?t=1609
To me it looks amazing. Old D&D charm, but now with all the gameplay options you could ask for.
However, game's Steam page is already full of haters who pretend this is not "real" Baldur's Gate and should be cancelled or renamed at least. Thoughts?

Well, this is effectively divinity original sin 3 with D&D rules, lore, classes and races. I don't mind much though, for one it doesn't have the stupid armour system.
A few pet peeves:
- The dice roll animation looks out of place. Game looks too modern for that.
- No atb bar? Seriously first side plays, then the other?
- Yes they reused the dos2 engine but it looks exactly the same. It's pre-alpha so that may change but how much would they have to change to give this game a different identity?
- The superhero jumping up and down. It's pretty ridiculous and the effect looks too flashy.
- They go for cinematic dialogues but the character expressions are completely unchanging. Take a few examples from mass effect maybe?
I really like the idea of incorporating bonus actions per turn, expanding stealth gameplay and have bad rolls lead to interesting outcomes.

Everyone is complaining about that.
However, I didn't play or even get familiar with Divinity. So I don't care. I care only about original BG comparison.
I mean, what's wrong with one game being very similiar to another, very successful game? From the same developer? Anti-fan syndrome I guess.
It's not like they suddenly turned BG3 into cartoony MMO Tetris or whatever... Old familiar elements are there, but other stuff was improved up to modern standards.

It's kinda like H7 reusing almost every H6 model they could. H6 looked good but H7 didn't look like a new game. It ended up looking more like an H6 mod with 'corrected' gameplay.
Except this happening to homm sucked and in the case of Baldur's Gate 3 mostly raises some eyebrows.

Not liking something makes you a hater by default as much as liking it makes you a fanboy by default. People have different opinions, the Internetz should get used to that - the mature part of it at least.
This trailer and the gameplay look nothing like Baldur's Gate, you don't have to love it or hate it to state the obvious. I couldn't care less how they decide to name it, I personally think that the series is overrated, but that thing can't even be called a spiritual successor. Whether it will be a good game is another thing entirely.

Yep, it does look like Larians game through and through, probably the same engine as Original Sin 2.
At worst this will be a great game, becasue that's what Larian is making currently. At best it will be a sequel people were waiting for.
My only hope with this game is that they will limit their "unique" type of humor. For me BG's were always serious games. Yeah I know it had people talking to hamsters and some easter egg here an there, but Larian takes it to another level with their skeleton squirrel knights or buckets on heads.
I think the haters are people who didn't even play it or senile old gamers who live in the past (like myself, but I'm ok with BG3 so far).
PS: It's been a while since I had any contact with D&D so I completly don't know what's currently happening there lore and mechanics wise...

Very few people actually referred to what the presented game is. Most of them complained what the game is not, or - totally weird to me - what DOS is.
If these opinions were representative, BG3 would turn out to be worst RPG ever made, got 1/10 reviews and become total disaster. Somehow I don't quite believe it
Reminds me of recent story in Steam when people game Borderlands 2 negative reviews because Borderlands 3 was Epic Store exlusive. Now that is immature. Steam community is just toxic.
Also, it didn't stop B3's success either.

@blob2
You remember how nwn hordes of the underdark and nwn2 had 3.5 edition? As far as I can tell, 5th edition is a smoother and evolved version to make up for the less user-friendly 4th edition. I don't remember any games using D&D rules inbetween - pillars, divinity and torment all used their own systems. As for actual events in the realms, I don't have the slightest idea.

I don't follow the lore much, but I do play D&D and I can confirm - 5th edition is the most user friendly and streamlined D&D has ever been. (or at least since 3.5 'cause that's the earliest one I've experienced)

Mine was with 2nd Edition(Baldur's Gate 2) and I quite liked it but there were clear shortcomings compared to 3.5: Pure thieves sucked, mages could become completely untouchable for a while, wisdom did not affect divine spellcasters, divine spells were useful but not quite on par with arcane, they had that weird dual class system that you'd lose all your previous class bonuses till you gained an equal level of the other class, thac0 was less intuitive than armour class, skill system was not quite as developed, no skill point buy system meant your stats could be very damn random etc.

I have a friend that complains about the good old days with each new edition, but I know 4th edition is pretty smooth and I'm assuming 5th edition is the same way.
1st and 2nd edition are just clumsy.
The spelljamming ship in the cinematic is awesome That goes way back to Pirates of Realmspace from 1992. Love that game.

I do feel this should be renamed (sorry, but not being a continuation of the story. breaking from core gameplay in ways that 5E or 'modernization' does not require and not even bothering with evoking visual style are breaks for this being BG3) - but that does not mean I'm not looking forward to it, there were cRPGs in the Forgotten Realms before Baldur's Gate, there were cRPGs after.

If the game's storyline is strongly tied to the fallout of the Bhaalspawn crisis, especially since it's set in BG (where Ardred Adrian, canonical Marty Stu child of Bhaal decided to live after rejecting godhood, and where Bhaal was reborn upon the death of him and the last mortal Bhaalspawn,) then I can see it being tied to the old series. Being a successor storyline, rather than a continuation of the rather satisfyingly concluded Bhaalspawn story.
Given just how involved the Mind Flayers ended up being in BG 2 and Throne of Bhaal, the mind flayers and the bhaalspawn story can both be interwoven, the former leading to the later. Bleeding from mind flayers, to the fallout of the Bhaalspawn's death and Bhaal's return, and then returning to the mind flayers attempting to take advantage of the damage that the reborn Lord of Murder in a massive coup that is set to change the literal millions of people living in Baldur into slaves, intellect devourers and a new generation of flayers in order to plant the seeds of a reborn Ithillid empire... That could work out as a connecting line.
... If it isn't and if it ends up being exclusively about the mind flayers, gith, and the multiplanar war the two of them wage, then it has no reason to be called Baldur's Gate 3. It could simply be called The Forgotten Realms: The Forgotten War, and actually ride just on Larian studio's good will and the Forgotten Realms IP, because both are stupidly popular.

Power vacuum? The story is set like 100 years later. Also the bhaalspawn should have weakened the illithids a bit but I don't know how fast they reproduce and mature.
No, I think it's more tied to the re-emergence of the nautilus, allowing illithids to travel more or less anywhere. But as for the reason they did not use/have them before, I don't have a clue.

Ardred Adrian was alive until the start of 5e, and died at the ripe old age of like... 129 (Canonically, the Bhaalspawn was like, 24, and the events progressed over the course of 5-ish years, and he survived that entire time,) even though he looked 45. So if this is set around 100 years after the Bhaalspawn saga, it's still in the time frame! If it's 100 years after the start of 5e, though, then yeah there's no chance it's connected.
As for why not every Ithillid hive has their own Nautilus, it's mostly down to whether or not the hive's Nautilus was damaged in the Gith rebellion, or if they are descended from an Elder Brain/ Ullitharid that was from a damaged Nautilus. The objective of some hives is to make a new Nautilus, but each hive is rather individualistic, and they aren't particularly unified in their whole "Remake the empire under a single hive mind" thing.
