Job Loss: the Gut Check

I lost my job about 2 months and change ago.

I just filed for unemployment, to help make ends meet. I hadn't done it before because I have a bit of difficulty just accepting money I did not earn. I know that I paid into it while I worked at my last employer, it's just a hard feeling for me to shake.

However, that is not the feeling I am referring to.

While filling out the form and thinking of the answers to the questions, it was almost a repeat of the feelings when I had lost the job.

That was over two months ago...

I don't expect it to just not hurt, or even to possibly ever not sting, though I hope it won't at some point. It is just kind of an emotional kick in the privates. No matter the reason, whatever the job, it is just a hard thing to deal with, to think you are not valued enough to be kept. Unless you lose it due to something along the lines of drugs/harassment of other employees/other obvious reasons for simply not keeping a job, it is just a blow that is, quite simply, hard to shake. The analogy comes to mind of a boxer, ducking, weaving, bobbing, when all of a sudden-WHAM! You are out cold, outright KO. Then you come to, and it's like, what happened?

It is just a rough thing.

Not only that, but the things that people share to help or try to assist can sometimes just pour salt in the wound.

It makes sense to ask if someone who has lost a job has found a new one yet, or to ask if they have any leads, or made any progress. It is actually quite considerate of people to think to ask. At the same time, it is almost like saying, never intentionally on the part of the asker (hopefully), Have you stopped being a failure yet?

I mean, I know that people are not saying that, but it is rather hard to not think about the situation like that.

It can be hard to just do normal day to day things after that.

Anyone can feel free to comment on any of what I have shared. Depending on what questions are asked I may or may not give answers.

Sometimes life can be very trying...

That is never fun.. But it's not necessarily your fault either. Sometimes an employer can simply profit more by keeping less people which is pretty much the situation in Greece. A friend of mine was fired for that very reason(they even delayed his payment as much as they could) and soon he could not pay the rent. He had left his parents some months back, partially because they didn't get along and they would not help him out so that he would be forced to return. Which he eventually did, had to starve to get there. I tried to help but you can only help so much there. The one job he did find during that time, he was almost immediately fired since it's easier to fire the new guys. Another friend was hired and received a call soon after telling him he won't be keeping the job, same reason. Another friend had not been paid for 2 months..

Now that's harsh.. Especially for a proud person like you. All I can say is do not be discouraged, sometimes there is a lot more to it than just you. Best wishes in overcoming your problems.

Yeah, it's never an easy thing to lose a job...

Thank you for your sentiments Elvin.

Question though - when you said

"for a proud person like you."

I am not sure I understand what you meant when you said that, as pride can have conflicting meanings. I just wish to understand what you said to me.

What did you mean when you said that?

You said that you have trouble accepting something you did not earn, that's not how most people think. Also how you take this predicament personally. That is a good drive as long as you don't let it weigh too much on you

Thank you. I appreciate your compliment. Yeah, I know i don't think how a lot of people think. I have just learned for myself that I can't take things for granted that a lot of people often do, in my own life.

it seems most people live unemployment very bad because that makes them feel invaluable, or they do not know what do.
among other things, that shows how work has become quite bad in our society, because there is much more to life than just making money, and yet we feel empty when we have no job.

Mac, I understand that at the moment you are emotional which means that everything we all have to say won’t have much of an effect but here goes anyway, hoping that a small fraction will indeed be registered….

Regarding unemployment, it is not a handout, it is not you abusing the law, you have worked hard and have paid your taxes, there are far less deserving people than you on unemployment, it is your right and you have earned that right over the years, even though you feel that way it is NOT accepting something you haven’t earned.

Your job is not what defines you !
Maybe you have lost it because of your mistakes, maybe you have lost it because of any of many other factors unrelated to you, that is not important now, what is important is to remember who you are, to know your worth and to keep your chin up.
Keep in mind that in life pain is inevitable but suffering is optional, so smile no matter what the life dishes out because after all it is only up to you where you go from here, sign the unemployment papers, take some time to replenish your well needed energy and get back on the horse, it is not going to be the easiest task but nothing worthy is ever easy….

Fingers crossed

yeah, of course, people have various reasons to work. but the main purpose of all jobs is still to make money. I mean, that's the reason why the government wants you to have a job.

Thank you Smithey.

[To Fauch] If it were just about having money, then it would not matter how we get it. To me, it is about providing for my family. Money is just a tool. The real benefit to a job is to take care of my family.

Anything beyond that is just hubris.

Everyone wants a job, but if the economy isn't working out well enough for you to get one, by all mean use the tools available to feed your family. It would be pointless not to.

Nobody would blame you for doing what your family needs you to do =)

I've been there.

Being laid off (especially when the US economy collapsed in 2008) was rough. Jobs were nearly impossible to find as our economy also depended on business with American clients and companies (which either went out of business or got stingy at the time).

It was a really hard time for me, but I did what I had to for my family. I only had enough savings to keep us going for 6 months (twice what's actually recommended typically to keep you going between jobs) but I applied for EI (Employment Insurance, I think they're called Unemployment Benefits there) and swallowed my pride. I've paid my part into the system and still am now. It's nice to know that I am able to keep my family going for periods of time longer than my savings could.

I was unemployed for a year and 6 months. EI lasts a year but the government also started a program for people laid off due to the economy to reskill themselves to fit better into the economy. So I went to school for a year while on EI. It ran out, but I finished school and the economy recovered enough that I have been working a real job since September of 2009. (Actually TBH, I was laid off again in June 2010, but got another job almost a month after.)

EI was hard, especially applying for the Second Career program. for normal EI, you have to keep detailed records of each job you apply to including contact information so they can confirm if they wish to look into your progress. For second career I also had to make a report with detailed information and contact many different businesses (I think I submitted over 100 businesses in the report) to get them to confirm they would hire somebody with the skillset I was going back to school for. It was a full time job in itself.

Don't knowck yourself for doing what you need to do. The whole point of these social programs is so that you can use them to improve yourself. If you use them the right way, you can even be proud of it to a degree. The only shame is if you're just abusing it, sitting on your rear end doing nothing to contribute to society (not trying to find work, not even tyring to educate yourself).

Well, update to the situation, I have another 1-3 weeks before I get to know if I even get unemployment, during which time I cannot receive so much as a red cent in order to not damage what I would recieve...

I understand the concept of getting a job to roughly equal what I had received pay wise before, but not to receive any income while getting the benefits? That seems a bit ludicrous...

They had to determine if I was eligible. Guess we will find out huh?

Yay for bureaucracy...

Remember my previous post? I said I didn't find a real job until September 2009?

I DID find some crap minimum wage jobs as they were also somewhat freed up of desperate people by then. I was working 88 hours a week in 2 jobs and coming home to sleep in between. The best of them was Costco (ooooh, 1 dollar above minimum. Yay...)

My son didn't even recognize me after a while, he knew his uncle better than he knew me. that was a tough time. (He wasn't even a year yet then, but he recognized me before I started working. It was like hell.

My heart goes out to you for that situation. It is not right that that would have to happen. I am grateful that there are (well, were) two incomes in this household. Otherwise this would be even worse... which is a good thing it isn't.

Are you able to work normal schedules now Khal? So you can see your son normally?
