Palace - Viking Theme Town
With "Might and Magic: Heroes VI" coming soon, I finally felt enough inspiration again to create a (hopefully complete) town as an expansion for the upcoming Heroes! However, as I read through several topic, I realized, that me is not the only person, who is interested in Vikings, overall, in the Norse Mythology. So please take my creation as a humble try to create something!
I plan to correct everything as soon we get new information, till then, I use the official Heroes VI site as the basics! So, on your marks, get set...GO!
FIRST POST OF POSSIBLE ROOMS FOR IMPROOVEMENT ARE ON PAGE 3!!!
THE PALACE:
The Faction (basic informations):
The flame of fighting is what keep us alive, even when we fall on the battlefield
Palace warfare: "Triumphs bear legends"
Military strenghts: Powerful blessing spells, that they use on each other, besides, outstanding mobility and the varieties of waepons, which all harnesses its user with great power.
Military weaknesses: Extreme sensibility to damaging or cursing spells (protection spells are mostly not enough) and the failing in effective combat resistance.
(More to come...)
The Creatures:
Tracker (Upgrade: Brigand) (CORE unit)
Poacher (Upgrade: Headhunter) (CORE unit)
Berserker (Upgrade: Hatcheteer) (CORE unit)
Visionary (Upgrade: Viticinatress) (ELITE unit)
Silver Wolf (Upgrade: Cub of Fenris) (ELITE unit)
Venerable Warrior (Upgrade: Einherjar) (ELITE unit)
Amazon (Upgrade: Valkyrie) (CHAMPION unit)
(More to come...)

Two things that bug me about this otherwise passable faction:
-'Palace' doesn't seem like a fitting name for a viking town, IMO.
-'Cub of Fenris' doesn't sound particularly intimidating. How about simply 'Fenrir'? It works for the Cerberus.

The CORE units are all too similar and at first I thought all 3 were the same one (basic and 2 alt. upgrades). My suggestion is keep one (any) and replace the remaining two with fitting creatures, like a Snow Owl creature (flyer) and a Halfling (shooter).

I'm with Avi on this one.
"Too Human" indeed, what an aweful game.
Also with Nighty.
One boring human town is more then enough thank you very much.
Even if they were dwarves, still too boring.
Most of the units are to similar, it's a snoozefest.
I don't even like the name Palace for a norse-themed town.
Norse myth has enough fantastical creatures to render five of the seven creatures here obsolete twice over. (and I count five humans, coincidence? I THINK NOT!)
Valkarie as a Champion unit, even with a Boris Vallejo picture depicting them, is completely underwhelming, they'd make good elites, but not champs.

I took the liberty of coming up with some suggestions :
Core:
1. Barbegazi or some kind of Yeti creature?
2. Obligatory berserk warrior.
3. Obligatory caster/support unit =/
Elite:
1. Silver Wolf - Cub
2. Some Kind of Troll - Fantasy vikings don't need to be exclusively Aesir .
3. Amazon -> Valkyrie - Not on a horse, but still flying somehow.
Champion:
x. Venerable Warrior -> Einherjar - No longer on foot but on a mighty steed.
Bonus point if the steed has multiple legs

I'm with Nightterror and everyone else on this, too many humans. For a Vikingish faction I'd expect bears, eagles, and maybe boars and dogs as well.

Sorry Matt, but according not Nighty, real life animals are just as boring.
Now, maybe if they were on fire or something....

So base a creature of Gullinbursti, the Boar with golden bristles.
Boars are cool but a golden warrior boar is even cooler!

There are more than 100 things you can do with boars in a fantasy game, why pick a real-life version? Boars in real life are so weak, what chance would they have against something with an weapon? NONE.
So yeah i'm against real life animals in games, they are just underwhelming.
Whilst I agree that normal animals are a bit bland for a heroes game.
Boar are not weak, they are significantly more dangerous then even Wolves.
They are big, heavy, fast and have tusks that can tear your body up beyond recognition.
If you piss off a wild boar enough for it to attack you (which is surprisingly easy by the way) you are in serious trouble unless you know your way around a shotgun and have one with you.
Boars are right up there with Bears and Wolves when it comes to woodland dangers.
True they will run more often then fight but seeing as they aren't carnivorous (though they can eat meat) that's simply a matter of risk/reward, for a Boar is not advantagous to risk injury to kill an other animal because it can eat plants and fungi just as easily with minimal risk.
But when accompanied by young or cornered, they will kill a grown man who isn't packing a large caliber gun.
They are officialy classed as a "Dangerous Wild Animal".
DO NOT MOCK WILD BOAR.

Yeah, that's why they used special spears to hunt them.

Quote: Okay, so a real-world peasants can be killed by a realtime boar?
No, a real-world hunter can be killed by a real-world boar, that's the guy who's just stuck the spear in the boar (they use special spears, else the bloody things have a tendency to work up the spear and gore the hunter). Give a boar some armour and some metal points for the tusks and you won't want to be on the other side.

I never understood the point of having animals like wolves and boars as creatures in HoMM games when you can easily have something far more interesting like a Chimera or Sphinx.
Also I have to agree that there are way to many humans in this town. It feels like it is barbaric Haven with snow in it.
The Norse mythology has tons of creatures in it, you can even use its version of elves. And with the richness of the norse mythology, I think its a bad idea to have lots of human creatures.

No it hasn't.
At least not a lot of creatures that sound good in English as well.
And neither Chimera nor Sphinx fit this particular town, to be honest.

Chimeras etc were just examples of creatures you can have in Heroes games instead of boars, wolves and dogs.
And you must be joking with that there are not many Norse myth monsters, here are some:
* Frost, Fire and Mountain Giants.
* Lots of different Trolls.
* Dark dwarves/Goblins.
* Valkyries.
* Einherjar ("foreign names" are not a problem, look at Sanctuary in H6)
* Wyrm/Lindwyrm
* Berserkers
* original mythological Light and Dark Elves
and many more, there are plenty of options
in fact, I might be making a norse town for the next ICTC

Quote: Then why not make the boar like this instead?
Call it a Razorback or something and I'm all in. If you wanted to you could give it porcupine spines as well, and maybe regeneration. I never said it had to be normal boar after all.
Quote: I find it extremly irritating that so many souls have so low level of fantasy, why everybody wants normal animals in this freaking game, grow some fantasy cells please.
What, are we talking Dragons, Unicorns, Fairies, etc. because those are clichéd as hell. Besides, what is the Thunderbird but a bird with a few special abilites, what about the Gryphon, it's just the mix of a lion and an eagle right? Besides 6 of Herakles 12 tasks involve 'normal' (ie, just enhanced, not made up) animals.
Quote: I never understood the point of having animals like wolves and boars as creatures in HoMM games when you can easily have something far more interesting like a Chimera or Sphinx.
Well Fenrir was a wolf, and Herakles first task was to kill the Nemean Lion.
