That's weird. My calculations showed completely different values.
What type of damage formula are you using?

me? damage x attack x weekly growth
and for defense : HP x defense x weekly growth.
by the way, devils were my favourite tier 4 units. not for their strength of course, but for their ability to summon a powerful stack for free.
yes of course, druids can summon too, but if you had a large stack of devils, it took them a few turns to summon an army as big
overall I had the impression that high level units were pretty well balanced in H4 (at least until the expansions lol) though, faerie dragons are weak against an army led by a tactician, whereas they can be near unbeatable in other cases.

damn. seems like I've been using wrong formula.
In Homm4 you divide attack by defense and multiply damage by whatever you got this way..
duh. Strange system.

When playing Might, I prefer Thunderbirds over Behemoths due to their massive movement advantage. Even though the Behemoths are superior in a one-on-one battle, the Thunderbirds have a higher growth rate. Combined with the Lightning ability (which ignores the high Defense of level 4 creatures), their overall combat effectiveness surpasses the Behemoths.
Order usually means Titans. Combined with the Genies and a powerful Mage, you can usually pick pretty much anyone apart from a safe distance. This task is only difficult when playing against Death; Dragon Golems are naturally the preferred choice here. Should my enemies manage to get close to my forces, the Titan is almost as powerful as the Dragon Golem in melee; the Titan can be used for anything.
Nature is a fairly difficult choice. Still, I happen to prefer Fairy Dragons, as a decent Griffin stack with Snake Strike and other buffs are a worthy match for a level 4. This usually means you can have your level 4 at the back row, casting spells. The Phoenixes are very powerful creatures, and their Rebirth ability is wonderful, but the Fairy Dragons are much more versatile.
For Chaos, it's another hard choice. Hydras have a much bigger damage potential because of their multiple attack, but the most important thing is that Chaos has a lot of powerful blessings that are obviously useless on Black Dragons. With Haste, Bloodlust, First Strike and Cat Reflexes, Hydras are clearly superior to Black Dragons. Still, Black Dragons have one huge advantage over Hydras: their daily movement, at 30. Therefore, I choose Black Dragons the majority of the time.
Life is one of the easier choices. While I find Angels and Champions to be roughly equal in fighting power, the Angels are faster and more mobile. Their Resurrection ability is also amazing. The Charge ability would be more useful if the Champions were not so restricted by terrain. Terrain Walk and Speed are very useful for the Champions, but not enough to make me choose them over Angels.
Death is for me the hardest choice. Bone Dragons are more powerful, in addition to their Undead and Panic abilities. The Skeletal ability means that you have to deal with them up close, and few units can match it in close combat. The Devils, on the other hand, are fast as hell. Combined with their Teleport ability, this means you can usually take out important targets very early. Summoning Ice Demons creates a nice addition to your forces, as they can freeze, steal retaliations, and are quite sturdy for their level. Even if they die, it's no loss for your army. It's a toss-up between these two (except when I'm against Life, of course).
