I'm surprised none of you beer lovers has mentioned the greatness of Belgian Beer. Puts the English to shame and gives even the Germans a run for their money.
Speaking of Germans and Belgians, do Belgian women ever willingly shave their heads?

I just wish that day never comes.
If you can be a fan of a country I'm a big fan of Belgium Mostly how far advanced they are on human rights and freedom overall. I just wish to live there. It is the only country in the world that doesn't have censorship for movies for * sake
And about their governmental system. It just seems strange to an outsider. Maybe the citizens are just happy with it?

Well, despite the turmoil (and the HIGH taxes) it is still fairly pleasant to live over here. Although in Nordic countries like Norway or Iceland, I've heard there are even LESS restrictions to daily life and stuff like censorship/sexuality/religion/civil rights etc.
I'm not 100% knowledgable about the situation in Turkey, but I'm certain that compared to them, Belgium must look like a civil paradise of sorts.

And in the news today:
There was an attack in the city of Liege today, where a mad gunman opened fire on and threw grenades at innocent passers-by at the Place St-Lambert (where the Liegois Courthouse is located). Three people killed, plus the gunman himself and about 125 people injured.
My condolences to the victim and their families. Two of the people killed were still minors.
Quote:Amrani had been released from prison in October 2010. He had been convicted to a 58-month (4 years, 10 months) sentence he received from a Liège court in 2008. The conviction was for possession of thousands of weapons parts, dozens of weapons, including a rocket launcher, assault and sniper rifles, as well as 2,800 cannabis plants
Sounds like someone whom 58 months in jail would turn into a precious addition to any society.

I find it oddly annoying how when something like this happens, the news article feels the need to quote some random ultra-type A personality official that makes a statement condemning the attack.
No ****. Nobody cares. Save the 20-40 words. What exactly do you expect?
"And it appears that both towers have now fallen after the 2nd plane crashed into the WTC. The mayor of New York made a formal statement saying that he thinks the attacks were totally rad and that residents shouldn't be so quick to be upset about it. It has been reported that he gave his secretary a double high five after making the statement. We'll have more on this in just a few minutes."

Tell us about it. The severity of the blunder is just starting to become public news.
Amrani was, just before his release, subjected to a psychologic test, which he passed. The Courtroom that allowed his released based their motivation on said report, although (and I'm not making this up) both the Public Prosecutor AND the warden Amrani's jail advised against it. Basically, the courts took the word of someone who only superficially met Amrani over the words of the people who kept his criminal record and who kept him under watch 24/7. What a farce.
The former Justice minister has already pointed a grease fat old accusing finger at the Police (as if it's THEIR fault Amrani was able to commit such acts -ftr it wasn't their fault, at all) and indirectly at the Former Secretary of Internal Affairs, Annemie Turtelboom (who also happens to be his successor for the portfolio of Justice Minister in the current government). Likely, every party will accuse each other (although it was a CLEAR blunder commited by the courts) and very little (or worse: inappropriate) measures will be taken, as per usual.
Turtelboom has her work cut out for her with this incident. She has however, proven herself to be a responsible and competent Secretary of Internal Affairs, so there's a decent chance we may actually get an appropriate response. (Unlike her predecessor who -just like with this incident- was always eager to put the blame elsewhere, especially when he himself was clearly at fault.)
We aren't too affected by the tragedy in Flanders, but still, the attack dominated the news for the past week (and will keep dominating it for at least another one). Let's hope the government will learn the right lessons from this.
This attack was -in my mind- a terrorist attack. Not out of religion (although the perpetrator was a muslim, but there are zero indications religion was a motive, so I will not assume otherwise), but out of severe loathing of the state. Apparently, Amrani had a VERY large err... "track record" of crimes, and his lawyers claimed he felt "villainized" by the Courts. Hence his attack in front of the courthouse, which was apparenrtly meant as a huge middlefinger to the courts for -in his mind- pestering him all his life. (obviously, he's nowhere near innocent. It shows how delusional, bitter, dangerous, narcissitic, phychotic and mentally disturbed this man was... and the shrinks still gave him a favorable report- Disgusting and frustrating at the very same time, especially for the victims themselves.)
Bah, I feel the bile piling up inside me so I'll give it a break for now... but still, this entire case shows how rotten Belgium is (and Justice *IS* the clearest indication of it ) it has been so for over a decade) and how desperate the country is for the constitutional reforms it so sorely needs.

you really need to get that system fixed!
I disagree. Its intended to be a broken system in the first place, and if a broken system seems broken it works wonders.
I agree. It seems to work.
Belgians are funny as hell
Sometimes I get the impression it is just an elaborate country-wide attempt at trolling the world. In which case they are doing a damn good job. And if it's not, well... It's still funny!
