Personal Growth
The past few days ive been going through alot of my old threads, posts and bonuses. I was doing so mainly to relive some of my most active years at HC. Then it hit me, ive been a registered member of HC since june 2003. Thats about 8.5 years. Im 23.5 now, so i was 15 when i joined up here. Obviously alots changed in my life since i joined, i now have underarm hair.
Personal growth wasnt something i ever thought about, or measured in anyway. However last night i couldnt help but read through my old posts and think, "i cant believe thats how i used to act/post," and i dont mean that in just a bad way. Whilst reading through some excellent RP's i used to participate in, (notably Lets Have War and saga of glade river valley) I couldnt believe how well structured and worded some of my posts were. There were posts however that left me almost feeling a sense of embarrassment for myself.
It wasnt just what i wrote, my attitude and style of posting changed alot during my time here too. Im a firm believer that the way someone acts online is a very good indication of who you really are. In the real world you may have troubles in your personal life. Many things can influence the way a person acts. getting bullied or a bad childhood can make a person withdraw for example.
These sorts of things can skew the way you act, but when you come to a message forum like this, nobody knows you and all people can judge you on is the quality/hilarity of your posts. You can finally be yourself. Ive finished school, so i dont get to write essays or in depth fictional stories anymore. I almost forgotton what it was like to write anything more that a few sentances long, so its nice to look back and remember that i used to be literate.
Ive spent many hours the past few days, going through all my history here. It was good to look back and see myself over the years. I feel like ive learned something about myself and thus, grown from it. Come, share a story of your personal growth moments!

Other than small quirks here and there I haven't really changed that much I think. Guess I learned "how to act" on forums over time, becoming less annoying than I probably was at the beginning.
As far as posting style goes, I feel like I'm reading a completely different person's posts when looking back. I particulary annoy myself when I see how I hadn't discovered the " ' " button, instead using " ´ " in my English. Like " I´m "... looks retarded but I didn't know better.

It was more embarrassing for me to read my old posts on a Warcraft 3 forum, made ten years ago. Idk, they were just... dumb. As if the poster was retarded. Stupid syntax, stupid opinions, stupid emoticons everywhere... and at that time I thought I was an intelligent guy (as intelligent as a 14yo can be lol). Wonder if I'll look the same at my current posts in the next ten years

You're not the same person you were 5 minutes ago, a little more drastic in my case, I've got the same knowledge at my disposal, I can just utilize it better, and I know that in 3 years time i'll be much improved. If it wasn't for my past mistkaes I would never have advance to what I am now, it's evolution and so I've learnt to live without regrets.

I known Dragon since he was a teen, so I can vouch he has def changed in alot of ways.
I am sure he will say I changed about a 90% LOL.
I guess there was many reasons why I came on here, I fell for this place because i loved the game.
I had many histories on here & made many friends on & off here.
There is just too much to tell. I am older now & I changed alot with HC.
I seen mods come & go.
I seen members come & go & it repeats all the time.
Slayer can probably explain me better then me
Seriously there is just so much to tell.
I been there when all the big issues happened, on or off Heroes. Plus on or off games.
I been off scenes on popular threads & I helped many members on personal problems.
I think I changed alot since when i first came here.
Most importantly, I dont drink much as I used to at all.

So since I have not known either of you long enough to comment, I'll just put up a personal reflection, aye?
Looking back even one year, I can see that I have changed. Looking at old RPs, I see spots where I could have done better, made more of a livable, real character. I see that my thoughts are much more clear and my word choice is vastly improved. Thank you for that HC.
I also see that I have become less innocent, by quite a bit. I (despite popular belief) do not randomly spot nonsense because I can anymore, sometimes I just do it to mess with people and other times I can just see a thought that did not form as I wanted it too.
I find myself using the word "aye" allot, when before I only recognized that such a word existed.
I have realized that the Glade is not present everywhere, and that certain old men will make me mad or just very confused in the OSM... hence me leaving for a bit there. Sure, I'd look in from time to time, but I couldn't find the will to comment or contribute. I felt that nothing I could come up with or say would be original or add to the discussion in any way. Sometimes, I still feel like that, and have actually erased a good half-hour's worth of rant from history and just stayed silent.
Every once in a while I will pop in to the altar... I swear, it does happen. Mostly, I participate in things that allow me to grow creatively and emotionally, and that's found more in the Glade, tavern and the OSM.
I still go to the VW when I am utterly bored out of my skull... and that's also where Mentat shows up most often, so...
I've been around for a few things, not as many as Acu, DS or a whole battery of other posters, but I have seen some rather pissed off people and I have been around for the retiring of two mods (MM is basically retired, and The Hydra was never around ever...). I've seen a member banned and a spambot invasion. I was annoyed by both in their time.
I used to be a grammar nazi. Imagine how that turned out...
All in all, I have to say that this place is fun and I rather like it. thank you Val (who I've seen exactly twice) for making this place!

Well ya got to remember that it is the same as real life.
You USUALLY get wiser & grow up from age.
I was 3 months old just turning 24 when I first came on here.
I am alot older now & my life has changed & so have I.
I dont even feel how I felt with my personality on here anymore.
I feel more mellow & not as much of an AHOLE as I used to be.
I guess it goes with age.
You will see that as well when ya get older Gnomes.

I joined HC when I was 12. Now I'm a few years older. I was a bad spammer when I first joined. Then I joined Let's Have War in the Glade and didn't quite understand how RPs were supposed to work, so I was banned from it and returned with a second account under the name of Deimos. Somehow it took over a year for the mods to find out.
Then I discovered the OSM. TheDeath, Asheera, Bak, JJ, Corribus, and the rest have taught me much and given me countless hours of education and entertainment. People say I never change my mind, but many of my opinions now are not what they were back in 2008. (I still maintain that people don't understand what pillar theory really means, though. )
I've spent at least an hour a day on HC for a significant portion of the last 8 years. It's not an exaggeration to say I grew up on HC.

Well I think I have changed ****loads since I first came here. I nearly got banned back in the day. I remember my first few posts were all in Capitals and I only used to post in the Library and WoG for a little bit as well. Then I was a massive spammer and disliked by a lot of the community bar a few people who I still consider friends. As you can see, I'm not like that at all now. I used to take a lot of **** back then but I give as good as I get nowadays.

I love looking back on my posts, though there are some time periods where I have not dared to look back.
I guess my HC career has looked like this:
-----_-__-_____-_-_-_-----------
new - xerdux - recovering - good
I love looking back on my old factions.
My first one was TERRIBLE and I named creatures like "Black Elite Spider Rider Guard" and yet I got a QP for it lol. I remember looking on factions I made 1-2 years ago and at the time, I thought they were perfect and that I would not be able to improve anymore. Now I think they are pretty terrible lol.

How very true.
+QP awarded for the nice introspective thread. Though if you don't mind, I'm moving this to the Tavern eventually, as I feel it fits in better there.
How's about some more tales of personal growth, both here and in RL?

by who you really are, you do not mean, how we act in "real" life?
I usually talk more, and I'm more inquisitive online. that's what is great about forums, you can say what you want, and those who feels concerned will read, and others will ignore it. I mean, if you get pissed off by a forum...
I remember, even before I came here, I had the reputation to brag a lot online about my exploits in video games.
and even though it still do it from time to time, it's far less often than before.

@corribus: As a member of the "pro tavern" party, I have no issues moving this thread there. Im at work atm, but ill edit this post at some point today and respond to peoples comments.
edit:
@fauch, what I was more getting at was online your personality is set free. In the real world you may be trying to fit in with a new group of friends, impress a new woman. This tends to apply more to younger people. When u get older people tend to be less judgemental. There's always exceptions to this though. Online people can put on acts and fake personas too, but for most this is a place to escape.
@Will: I remember you from when you first joined. I agree, I think you've changed alot too. You used to cop it a bit from members, myself included. But over the years I've seen you contribute in various threads and I have most definantly seen your writing improve. More structured, better worded, less spam
